    Re: Fortune's Favour Music

Been listening nonstop almost to Fortuness Favour.  Unfortunately mostly without guitar or mandolin in hand.

If your interested, Mike, I have a more accurate instrumental for Straight To Hell tabbed out for mandolin.  Still one more part in the eighth bar to work out properly.  I'm assuming it's Bob playing this part and he changes it from the trad version of Merry Blacksmith slightly to fit to the song easier.

Yeah, I know the G5 works out but I chorded it watching the youtube videos that are all acoustic from before the CD was released.  When you're playing it on your own it adds a bit more colour.  If you're recording it I suggest one guitar (acoustic) doing the sus chords and another (electric) doing the fifths (power chords.)

Anyone else got anything yet.  Perhaps Company of Fools?

I've got a trad version of Banks of Newfoundland tabbed out for mandolin, complete with lyrics, including a verse that isn't on the CD.  Yet to see if it fits with the GBS version.  Well, most of the verses are GBS accurate, except one.

But I know I'm going to do it again!

Hey Robbie, I was wondering if you could send me a copy of the England tabs??...i'm still getting the hang of this whole guitar thing lol....and u should really make a songbook cuz it sounds like ur a pro!! we used to have a member named Baldie who put together a collection of all the tabs but he hasn't been on lately...it would be really cool!

                                                                                                                  Thanks ~Justin

    Re: Fortune's Favour Music

Well, I'm not Baldie.  But I do have copies of his song books.  When I first got into GBS, it was so easy to learn with his books so handy.  Since then I have transcribed a bunch of GBS jigs and reels for mandolin based on the  trad music he had up.

If someone writes out all the lyrics and sends them to MikeB, he's already got all the chords for the new album, he just needs the lyrics to put them on.

If anyone knows what the traditional parts are, I can find them and post or transcribe them for mandolin.  Maybe even adjust them for what is actually played.  Bob tends to adjust things to what he likes.

I don't mind being the keeper of the Songbook, but I need the help of all the other musicians here to get it right.

But I know I'm going to do it again!

    Re: Fortune's Favour Music

Yes, please send me the lyrics, in Word or a copy-and-pasteable format.  It will only take a few listens through to put the basic guitar chords down after that.  There are many intracasies to the songs - different fingerings, etc - but once you have the basic chords down, you can at least play along!  For example, Robbie's tab for England has an open tuning in C, but I have a hell of a time remembering the chords for non-standard tunings, so I figured this can be played with a capo on the 3rd fret, then played as if it was the key of D (F because of the 3rd fret Capo).

I know there is probably an easier way to do this but I'm just gonna post all the lyrics here in this thread so that anyone lurking around the forum can have printable lyrics too.

    Love Me Tonight

    We’ve waited all this time

    This long and lonely time.

    The light that trickles down,

    And soaks into your eyes.

And all I can send her

The awkward pretender in this life.

    Chorus:

I wonder if you’ll love me tonight

I wonder if you’ll love me tonight

    So delicate and lovely

I Wonder if you love me

    Are you on my side?

On my dark and lonely side

I’ll make it worth your while

I’ll give you every reason why

    And all we’ll remember

A simple surrender just in time

    CHORUS

    Bridge:

You and I could wait and see

    A single not don’t make a melody

You and I could wait and see

    A single note don’t make a melody

    All together you and me

    A single note don’t make a melody

    All together you and me

    A single note don’t make a melody

Oh and all I’ve been saying

The one thing that’s been weighing on my mind

    Final Chorus:

I wonder if you’ll love me tonight

I wonder if you’ll love me tonight

    So delicate and lovely

    Soo delicate and lovely

I wonder if you love meee tonight

    Tonight(3x)

    Re: Fortune's Favour Music

    Walk On the Moon

Is it just me, or a message from above?

Bells are ringing and push has finally come to shove

The door before me now is open just enough

    Pre-chorus 1:

And I’m sick and tired of waiting for dreams that never come

And games I never played in but still wish that I had won.

    Chorus:

    I’m alive

I’ve got one shot and I’m taking it to you

    I’m alive

I’ve come to realize not a moment too soon

This is my one small step

This is my Walk on The Moon

Don’t you think their hands were shaking

As that rocket ship touched down??

    I’m sure they shivered

When they finally touched the ground

And the giant leap so fragile that it hardly made a sound

    Pre-chorus 2:

But it must have been amazing, what a world they got to see

So I don’t care, my foolish fear won’t get the best of me

    Chorus

    Instrumental Break

    Pre-chorus 2(with more power)

    Chorus

    End

    Re: Fortune's Favour Music

    England

    Mccann

    Chorus:

We were far from the shores of England, far from our children and wives.

To play our hand in the Newfoundland, where the wind cuts like a knife.

We were far from the shores of England.

We shipped on board the Mary Ann to find a better life,

And we walked across the water when she broke up on the ice.

We came ashore in Carbonear with nothing but our rights,

And I wondered if I e’er again would see my London lights.

    Chorus

We spend our days amid the waves, working water, hook, and twine.

We’d go for weeks with blistered cheeks, waiting for the sun to shine.

But as long as the sky hold over us, we will not taste the brine.

And we’ll curse the cod with the fear of God as we haul in every line.

    Chorus 2:

We were far from the shores of England, far from our children and wives.

To play our hand in the Newfoundland, where the wind cuts like a knife.

We were far from the shores of England.

We were far from the shores of England, far from our native soil.

To chase a wish and to hunt the fish, and on the rocks to toil.

We were far from the shores of England.

    Instrumental Break

Should we find Fortune’s Favour, and be spared from the gale.

We will live off honest labor with our hearts as big as sails.

If I should die don’t bury me, or leave me to the sea.

Send my bones back to my home where my spirit can be free.

    Chorus 2

    END

    Re: Fortune's Favour Music

    Here and Now

    Mccan/Hallett/Workman/Doyle/O’brien

The sun must set to rise,

the light will leave your eyes again.

    Then breaking like morning’s dawn,

does summer feel the winter come.

And the hardest part of life

is to live while you’re alive, my friend.

    So sing an unwritten song

or repent for the deeds you left undone.

    Chorus:

This is Here, and this is Now.

It’s the moment that we live for

and we just can’t live without.

It’s all clear to me now,

    We’ve already started dying

And our time is running out.

    Oh-Oh-Oh, Oh-Oh-Oh,

    Right Now.

    Time is ours to steal

She’s a secret to reveal, my friend.

And when your children have all grown,

You wait by the window and wish them all back home.

    Chorus(without the last “Right Now”)

    Bridge:

Walk a little further off the beaten path,

And we’ll drive on even if we get there last.

Our backs against the wall we will lunge and fight,

And we’ll Rage, Rage, Rage against the dying of the light

    Chorus(x2)

    END

    Re: Fortune's Favour Music

    Long Lost Love

    Mccann/Trapper

I’d walk a thousand miles for you honey,

I’d walk a thousand miles in the sun.

I’d give up both my eyes if I could make you realize.

Why can’t you see that I’m the one??

Wish I could buy a limousine,

I’d fill It up and I’d pick you up and I’d drive you to your dreams.

But when you get out on the highway life is seldom as it seems.

When the car breaks down you start blaming me.

    Chorus:

    Moonshine bleeds into the dawn.

Who am I to say for you what’s right and what is wrong?

    When you’re gone, gone, gone,

    The world will carry on.

You’re like a song, song, song,

    Whose melody is wrong.

But it’s so, so hard to say so long to you

    My Long Lost Love.

Many a man has sold his soul for silver.

Silver ain’t worth nothing next to gold.

Some believe that diamonds shine forever,

But they offer little comfort when you’re old.

And you can’t take it with you when you’re gone.

It’s the same end for the weak as for the strong.

And if beauty is skin deep

Then why don’t it come more cheap.

Why can’t you and I just get along?

    Chorus

    Instrumental Break

    Chorus

    My long lost love(x4)

    END

    Oh Yeah

    Doyle/Mccann/Hallett/Workman/O’brien

    I’m gone,

You can’t get a hold of me.

    So long,

    It’s coming over me.

    I fly by,

And shatter the speed of sound.

    I’m sky high,

And I never wanna come down.

    Chorus:

    Oh Yeah,

    Oh Yea-ee-ye-ee-ye-ee-yeah

    Oh Yea-ee-ye-ee-ye-ee-yeah

    I’m a six gun,

    I’m fully loaded.

    There’s a Love Bomb,

    I’m about to explode it.

    I’m a bonfire,

And I’m burning through the night.

    Bye,Bye,

    I’m an arrow in flight.

    Chorus

    Bridge:

I’m not gonna be a crucifix pin cushion

I’m not gonna be a voodoo doll

I fly with a military precision

And this is my Holy Ground.

    The Banks of Newfoundland

Trad. Arranged by Great Big Sea

    You bully boys of Liverpool
    I'll have you all beware
When you sail on them packet ships,
    No dungaree jackets wear
But have a big monkey jacket
    All ready to your hand
For there blows some cold nor'westers
    On the banks of Newfoundland

    Chorus:

We'll scrape her and we'll scrub her
    With holy stone and sand
For there blows some cold nor'westers
    On the banks of Newfoundland

We had Jack Lynch from Malnahinch,
    Mike Murphy and some more
I tell you b’ys,  well they suffered like hell
    On their way to Baltimore
They pawned there gear in Liverpool
And they sailed as they did stand
But there blows some cold nor'westers
    On the banks of Newfoundland

    Chorus

Now the mate he stood on the fo'c'sle head
    And loudly he did roar
Come rattle her in me lucky lads,
    You're bound for America's shore
Come wipe the blood off that dead man's face
And haul or you'll be damned
For there blow some cold nor'westers
    On the banks of Newfoundland

    Chorus

So now we're off the hook me boys,
And the land is white with snow
And soon we'll see the pay table
And we'll spend the whole night below
And on the docks, come down in flocks,
    Those pretty girls will say
Ah, It's snugger with me than on the sea,
    On the banks of Newfoundland

    Chorus

    Re: Fortune's Favour Music

    Dream to Live

    Mccann/Trapper

Set off for America, far across the raging sea.

From the frozen coves of my island home, to the land of liberty.

I had to leave my girl behind, until I made my way.

Oh Molly dear, please wait for me, I’ll come back for you some day.

We landed hard in Boston and I’d never seen the like,

A small boat boy from around the bay in this sea of shining lights.

Two days in I got a job, building towers of high steel.

I had to learn to not look down, and I quickly learned to kneel.

And I wonder if this will ever end.

And I wonder if I’ll ever see your face again.

    Chorus:

All I need is one good night’s sleep,

In your loving arms to mend.

Sleep to dream and we Dream to Live.

Will I live to love you again?

I saved every cent I could but the months turned into years.

Then a letter came from Molly and confirmed my deepest fears.

She would no longer wait for me, she’d found a better man.

I might’ve been in America but my heart was broken in Newfoundland.

    Chorus

    Bridge:

    All I neeed,

    All I need.

    All I neeeed,

    All I need.

My working days are over now and my children have all grown.

I did the best with what I had but some days I feel alone.

I often wonder where you are, do you still know my name?

And deep inside this old man’s heart there’s a love that still remains.

    Chorus(x2)

    All I need

    All I need

    All I need

    All I need

    Company of Fools

    Doyle/Crowe

    Chorus:

    Bring on the clowns,

    the jokers, and buffoons.

I’ve had the time of my life

and the life of my times

     in the Company of Fools.

Many a truest word has been spoken by the Jester.

Standing against the tide is the noblest of gestures.

It’s the little pearls of wisdom that tumble from the light

That make us laugh until we cry because we know that they are right.

Within the strangest people truth can find the strangest home.

So meet me in the village where all we idiots go.

    Chorus

    Na-Na-Natimeeutimee

    Na-Na-Natimeeutimee

    Na-Na-Natimeeutimee

    Natimeeutimee-Na

I’m wading through the quicksand, in the gardens of the gentry.

Blooming vacuity leaves minds and pockets empty.

Now in the social order I accept the bottom rung,

Until the wine is pouring and the Lord commands a song.

So meet me at the staff door when the posers all go home.

We’ll gather with the other Fools and put on a proper show.

    Chorus(x2)

    Na-Na-Natimeeutimee

    Na-Na-Natimeeutimee

    Na-Na-Natimeeutimee

    Natimeeutimee-Na

So here’s to the Poorest Poet who always pens the truth,

And the Players, Writers, and Gypsies, And The Minstrels and their tunes.

I’d rather live an honest lifetime with those with nothing to lose.

    Than waste a night,

    Knee deep in shite

    That’s polished slick

    To look just right

    I’d rather live a lifetime

    In the Company of Fools.

    Instrumental break

    Hard Case

    Mccann/O’brien/Mahoney

She goes down fast and comes up slow.

She gets in high and goes out low.

Turns up late or doesn’t show,

She spends all her cash on letting go.

(She spends all her cash on letting go)

I’m never early, I’m never late.

    I’m in at 5 and I’m out at 8.

Running just to keep the pace.

When I’m tired I put on my bravest face.

    Chorus:

    The sign said “Go Slow”

And Lord knows how I tried to follow

Such a Hard Case with a soft face

You gave me one taste, now look at the shape I’m in.

I love her but I like you too.

My worst nightmare just came true.

We might be done but we’re not through.

So wear me out just like you used to do.

    Chorus

With the morning comes the sun.

The light of day just had to come.

Now I know I’m not the one.

I should feel bad but baby we had fun

    The Rocks of Merasheen

Trad. Arranged by Great Big Sea

The fondest wish that e'er I had since the day that I was weaned
Is to go back and walk again on the rocks of Merasheen

I still recall the sad farewell
I bid her on that day
When all upon a whaling ship
I went to earn my pay

On the hard rocks, the rocky rocks,
    The rocks of Merasheen

From out of Rose au Rue we sailed to hunt the big fish down,
We sailed upon the ocean till we sailed the world around.
With girls in every port of call I did go well astray
Forsaking her I left behind Back in Placentia Bay

By the hard rocks, the rocky rocks
    The rocks of Merasheen

Now in my old and aching age I think of her once more
Of how she fared while waiting for my knock upon her door.
What fate was hers I do not know but in my sleep I’ve seen
her walking on the cliffs above the rocks of Merasheen.

On the hard rocks, the rocky rocks,
    The rocks of Merasheen
On the hard rocks, the dirty rocks
    The rocks of Merasheen

    END
