    Making your own Tippers

Has anyone here ever tried to make their own tippers?

I'm always finding it hard to find a place around here that sells *good* tippers, In other words not the cheap thin light wood ones with the knobs on the end. Since I need a new tipper I decided to get creative and try to make my own. I bought a piece of wood dowling (sp?) 1 inch thick. I shaped it by first using a belt sander (not the best choice in sure), and finished it off with a piece of sand paper. The result didn't turn out that bad, its a little uneven but I like the sound it makes when I play.

here's a picture of my efforts (the piece I started with and the end result):

Not bad. One place I know of that sells good tippers would be O'Briens Music Store in St. John's. The tipper that came with my drum was horrible, so I had no choice but to go get a good one.

The Angelcann tippers are the best I've come across. They can get a really good sound out of your drum.

And don't tell anyone I told you this Wink but if you leave your name (and if you need to, your address) they can get the guys to autograph it for you.

I have two tippers: one is autographed and the other isn't. I only play with the one that isn't autographed.

The autographed one is just for looking at. Big Smile

    Thanks alan-rocks.

I'm heading to St.John's this summer and was planning on checking out O'Briens music. Hopefully I'll be able to find 1 or 2 good tippers there...do they sell the 'Angelcann' tippers there?

haha I will also have to see about getting it autographed Stick out tongue I've always been too shy to try to get autographs after a show so this seems like a good way Big Smile

Yes, they sell the angelcann tippers there. That's where I got mine. Love them to pieces! I was thrilled when I was told they had all three signatures on there!

I'm never TOO nervous to ask for autographs. Maybe a little. Alan does make my knees weak, but thats a topic for another thread! Stick out tongue

    Re: Making your own Tippers

Just a heads up about getting the tippers autographed:  O'Brien's will get tippers autographed but they would prefer not.  They do not encourage it, as a matter of fact.  The signed ones I have are largely as a result of a conversation about how they were for a GBS fan and the guy behind the counter offered to have them signed...I was not there for the purchase of them though.

That being said, they do indeed sell the Angelcann tippers at O'Brien's.  I have bought several tippers there and I love them all.  They are all weighted differently, and a couple of them have little bands carved into them for a bit of added detail even though they are still the same basic style.  I've used several different styles of tippers and I have to say that the ones I picked up are very easy on the wrist.

    Re: Making your own Tippers

Thanks for the heads up Bonnie. Now that i've been thinking about it it makes perfect sense why they would not want to get tippers signed. I can see how that would get annoying...and I definetly don't want to be a bother.

Though I'm still looking forward to finding myself a nice tipper or two there Smile
