Nickelback sucks, ruins Junos
Nickelback sucks, ruins Junos Matt Flynn, The Gazette.
Wednesday, April 1, 2009
The Junos — our at times lacklustre
equivalent to the Grammies — took place this past Sunday night in
Vancouver, with the intention of acknowledging achievements in Canadian
music. It’s a noble goal, considering the undeniable wealth of musical
talent this country possesses.
From east coast rockers Great Big Sea to British Columbia’s Michael
Bublé, the great white north’s musicians stretch genres and
generations. These groups and individuals ought to make all Canadians
proud and events like the Juno Awards should be times to celebrate the
efforts of these amazing musicians.
Why then did the members of Nickelback, who are not amazing and
barely musicians, even receive an invite to the Junos, let alone win
three?
The band — and I cringe applying this title to them — opened the
ceremonies with a performance of their song “Something in Your Mouth.”
A sample of the lyrics: “You’re so much cooler when you never pull it
out/ ’Cause you look so much cuter with something in your mouth.” I’m
sorry Chad Kroeger, how old are you? Nevermind. I’m ashamed a TV
broadcast celebrating Canadian music had to suffer through this poor
representation of our musical tastes.
So maybe the group has fans, but I don’t think I am wrong in saying
that the vast majority of Canadians — make that people everywhere —
can’t stand the Albertan rockers.
But maybe I shouldn’t direct my rage towards Nickelback — probably
the most successful band ever to rewrite the same song multiple times
and still get it released as a single — but rather towards the fools in
the Canadian music industry who keep nominating them for awards.
For those who are unaware, Nickelback converted three of its five
Juno nominations to shiny trophies last weekend. Album of the Year went
to the band for its recent release, Dark Horse. Somehow, they
also captured Group of the Year, beating out Great Big Sea (who wrapped
up a tour promoting its 11th album at the awards), Tokyo Police Club
and The Trews. Feist fell to Nickelback in the Fan Choice Award, which
is strange, because only one of those artists makes popular music to
which fans listen.
I don’t care if you like the band or not, but the Junos are about
recognizing achievement in the Canadian music industry. And what better
way to measure the achievement of a band than by the respect music fans
hold for them?
Take, for example, Celine Dion. We might not all have the theme song to Titanic on
our iPods, but the Quebecer — who was also up for the Fan Choice Award
— is a very talented and accomplished Canadian musician who is
well-respected by all music fans. Yet she is defeated at an awards show
by a bunch of rednecks that do no better than sing about sex and being
awesome.
Let the band suck all it wants. I can change the radio station
pretty easily if necessary. But when real Canadian talent has to step
aside to suffer the unbearable garbage that oozes from Nickelback’s
every lyric and note, then I have a problem.
I don’t hold this against Kroeger and co., but rather I blame
whoever’s great idea it is to keep recognizing Nickelback’s entire lack
of original and tasteful music.
Where is Stormy?

Re: Nickelback sucks, ruins Junos
Oh Matt tell us how you really feel!!! Sorry but I enjoy Nickelback's music. I have their CD's and have been at a number of their shows. Obviously a large number of people feel the same way based on their CD and ticket sales.

Re: Nickelback sucks, ruins Junos
Well, the old joke is that they were named "Nickelback" because everyone who every bought their CD's could only get a nickel back when they tried to sell them to a second hand store. Award shows often award the musicians, movies, and actors who have the best publicists. Period. I believe the likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin et. al never won a Grammy but lip synchers extraordinaire Milli Vanilli won several gold gramophone statues. I'd rather be a loser if the winners are as lame as Nickelback.

The Juno Awards clearly hate Canadian musicians..........
Great Big Sea is a lot more gracious about their Juno loss than I am, gotta say. Such a bitter pill to swallow. Hopefully they will be nominated next year and have their first win in front of a hometown crowd. I find it funny that the Canadian Juno's fall all over the same bands year in and year out, thus hindering Canadian impact on the international music scene. I'd like GBS to be nominated and win a Grammy next year, just to spite the Juno's.

That'd be a hoot all right! They're certainly headed in that direction stylistically. You never know... Love, Columbine (crystal ball's in the shop, but I can flip a coin)

Re: The Juno Awards clearly hate Canadian musicians..........
I don't think the Grammy's have the same prestige they once held. It's all apeasement and political bulls**t, I feel it's been that way for a while. All these blowhards in the tv, music and film industries patting themseleves on the back...oh paleeez. I think the list of non winners or non nominees is more respectable. Besides what clowns get to do the voting anyway ?

I'm always equal parts hopeful and terrified that Great Big Sea will get big in the USA. It would be well deserved for the band, but then I'd have to worry about not getting tickets to see their concerts here! As it is, they sell out every time they come to Portland and Seattle, which always makes me proud.

Re: The Juno Awards clearly hate Canadian musicians..........
Didn't read the whole article, but I enjoyed Nickelback's last few singles... not enough to buy an album. BUT after realizing they have some nasty lyrics... not so keen on the guys anymore. I don't know why... thought they were a little more clean than that? ... yet I love Britney Spears, haha... maybe it's a girl thing, hmm.
I look forward to 2010... Olympics!! And just a great year for GBS, so I am thinking. When does Alan's movie come out? Late this year or sometime next year? GBS still has big things to come!!! YAAA!

In the bigger cities, they ARE quite the event! It's kind of bittersweet - their turn for the mainstream has them selling out bigger and bigger venues at ticket prices I can no longer afford, but I can't help but be happy for them. They've worked their butts off for ages and they're finally getting the success they deserve, whether or not the Junos people ever notice. I just hope the richer fishing grounds of mass appeal prove as satisfying to them as the rocky little coves where I learned to love them. Love, Columbine

I'm with Columbine on that. It doesn't matter if they ever win a JUNO, although I would love to see them get one. They certainly deserve it. No matter what happens, i'll always remain a proud and true fan of GBS. They've done so much to make my life better, and I'm sure they've done the same for others.

Nicely put, Columbine. And there is no ban on fishing in the Sea of No Cares, to extend your metaphor. Cheerio. , GR8BIGC
