    Fiddlers Unite!

Write down your favorite tune (any, style, classical or folk) to play. Then tell us why

    I'll start.

    Degeneration, by Mes Aieux.

THis is a frenchj folk band who is made up entirely of guys, except for their fiddler, who is an enthusiastic, energetic, amazing girl with a firy style. They are the only Quebec band that I can actually stand. THis song is so fun to play.

Tullochgorum - done by the Barra MacNeils.  This piece is both my goal and my inspiration. It's what's keeping me going these days what's pushing me to practice and to keep going to lessons. It's an expression of utter joy in living, fun, frolic and love. And it's a gift to all who listen. And it's one of the pieces that inspired me to take up violin.

Anything played by Bob. I'm serious...I don't care what he's playing, just so long as he's playing. Hearing him play makes me feel like I am wrapped in a warm quilt, safe from the world and it's cars - whatever they may be.

    Re: Fiddlers Unite!

    My favorites are a tie:

Blue Bonnets over the Border done as an air by Natalie MacMaster. I love to play it that way.

    and

Neil Gow's Lament for the Death of His Second Wife done by anyone, but I particularly enjoy the Barra MacNeils' version of it, which I try to emulate. I bought a huge book of fiddle tunes just because it had those two tunes in it!

Thought I wasn't going to include Bob, now, didn't ya? Well, my favorite Bob tune is something I've never heard him do live although I've seen video of it - Aunty Mary. It's the tune which inspired me to begin learning the fiddle at the ripe old age of 50.

    Re: Fiddlers Unite!

There were several tunes that made me pick up the fiddle again after many years, but Swallowtail Jig was probably the biggest, so that's still one of my favorites. I play it with Lilting Banshee & Banish Misfortune. Banish Misfortune has become another favorite.

My favorite set is probably Lost Child/Hunting for the Buffalo. My teacher's recording is here at the bottom of the page. I love the unique sound the tuning gives (A E A C#).

One of these days I have to try to tackle The Contradiction. It's my favorite to listen to while wishing I could play it.

    Re: Fiddlers Unite!

I like playing "Orange Blossom Special" when I can remember it.

There's also this thing that GBS played at concerts before my time that I think was called "Tunez" that I picked up from listening to it a few times.

Classical? Suzuki book 1 as fast as possible right before a semi-professional orchestra concert is fun ;)

crap, it's 3:40 am and I want to play the violin now.

Do you have a source for the sheet music for "Orange Blossom Special"? I saw Leahy doing it on the 11th of this month and loved it!

As posted above, no, I don't. I remember playing it along with "Charlie on the MTA." I mostly play "Orange Blossom Special" by ear.

I am incredibly impressed by anyone who can play that particular piece by ear! Wow!

I kicked major butt in ear training; I think it's the only reason I passed music theory.

And I've never even seen OBS sheet music, come to think of it.

    Re: Fiddlers Unite!

I LOVE Tullochgorum!  My goal and inspiration too!  Although I have never heard the Barra MacNeils play it.  Where can I hear that?  I think my favorite version is a version Ashley MacIssac did at the Ceilidh Trail of Celtic music in the summer of 2007(I think it was 2007).  Anyway, Kimberly Fraiser has a great version as well.  Of course, which Cape Breton fiddler hasn't done this at least once.  I never tire of it!

It's the last track on the Barra's Racket in the Attic cd. You can get it off their site.

     Enjoy. It's fantastic.
