For some reason, when I try to upload an avatar from my computer, it never updates, it doesn't even go to the page that says my profile has been updated.

I get that problem a lot too. Often it's because the photo is too big (memory-wise). Other times I try again a few days later and it's fine.

you need to have it on the web already.  Have your parents help you get a photobucket account. Upload it  to there and then add it to your profile.  But since you're underaged you need to have your parents help you get the photobucket account.

The dumb thing I did was I forgot to check the "enable avatar" button at the top of the avatar page in my profile.

OK, I I have "Enable Avatar" Checked, uploaded a picture from photobucket and (as you can see) the Avatar is just a little black line.

Not sure how photobucket works compared to flickr but are you entering the right info for the image's URL? In Flickr under the photo is the URL you are supposed to use, it's not what appears in the URL line of your web browser.

Maybe someone knows more about Photobucket, like I said, I'm not familiar with it. Looking at it, I'd say try the 2nd one "Direct Link" and see if it works.
