GBS performs to Sold-Out House in Atlanta

GBS concert in Atlanta this evening was outstanding; one of the best that we have seen over the past several years.  The Variety Playhouse was packed with some of the audience having to use the balcony.  Kris covered a Shawn Mullins song for the solo this evening.  Shawn is from Atlanta and will be playing at the same venue on November 29th. We invited my nephew and his date to the show.  She began purchasing GBS downloads for her iphone before the second set.  I guess we have some new GBS fans to celebrate now... eh?

The following was posted on the Variety Playhouse website:

After releasing 2 platinum records and headlining hockey stadiums in their native Newfoundland,  US labels took notice and GBS was subsequently signed to Sire by Seymour Stein (Madonna/Talking Heads), who unleashed the band on an unsuspecting American public. Accolades and a solid cult following ensued. “We are showmen and we live and die by our trade,” offers electrified lead singer Alan Doyle. “I am drawn to the light and I was born to burn”. Born and raised in ‘the far east of the western world’, the lads have traversed the globe, all the while wearing their hometown on their sleeves. “Our music is of Newfoundland,” explains Sean McCann. “It would be impossible to do what we do if we were from anywhere else. Our songs come from the sea and the cliffs and the rocks and all the other natural beauties our country provides. Without her we simply couldn’t exist." A remarkable 15 years in, the band should by this time be content to slow down and rest on their laurels. Instead,  their newest release Fortune’s Favour sees them boldly embracing new sounds and new ideas, fearlessly pushing the boundaries of their own art and music. In their lifelong quest to marry the traditional music of Newfoundland with their own pop explorations, Fortune’s Favour is a new benchmark.

Looks like a great setlist and a great crowd! Thanks for sharing GenTaylor! Out of curiosity, what Mullins song did Kris sing? I thoroughly enjoy Shawn (and loved the one time I got to see him and GBS share a stage!).

I was there also, and the show was awesome.  I had a short list of personal favorites I wanted them to play, and would have been happy if they did half of them, but as the evening went on, they hit EVERY ONE of the songs I wanted to see them do live.  It was an amazing show, although Sean wounded his finger and his pride (turn on your guitar, Sean) and we all shared a good laugh with Bob (the Canoe fanatic).  Alan forgot which band he was in, and decided (with Kris's help) to become the Rolling Stones for a few moments... did that make Murray into Keith Richards?

I am glad that your day off in "Bucket Head" was fun, guys.  Atlanta is not well known for it's creative names (200+ Peachtree Streets in Atlanta), so your new name for Buckhead may catch on!

Kris did an excellent job with the solo!  It was an unexpected bonus to the great show.

I had very high expectations for the boys given their live albums, and was extremely pleased to rate them "Exceeds Expectations".

While the show was absolutely worth the wait, the boys need to come down this way more often.  I don't want to wait so long to see the next live show in Atlanta.   That tourbus doesn't look all that comfortable, maybe next time you can stay for a while!  You are hereby invited over to my home for a Kitchen Party.  My wife is an excellent cook!

I've seen GBS about 10 times now at different venues and I thought it was super energitic.  Might have been the coffee!!

It was a little bit of home in Atlanta and much cheaper than the flight back.  Look forward to seeing you again soon either here in the ATL or in St.John's.

Hey, Kim! We heard a rumor you'd be there, and will look forward to seeing you! Favorite moments from ATL: *Getting together with the OKC crew (Oklahoma City, as opposed to OKP crew). Always a pleasure. *Chemical Worker *the two very nice ladies behind us in line, one of whom had driven down from Virginia (!!!) *but the best ATL GBS moment of all was asking my nephew's GBS neophyte girlfriend at intermission, "Wha'dya think?!" and panicking because she was playing with her cellphone, only to have her say, "OMG!Are you kidding? This is GREAT! I'm downloading an album right now!" ....erm...Wow! Technology rocks. I will never look at a kid playing on a phone again in quite the same way. They might be organizing a military coup for all I know! When I looked over at her during the second set, she was indulging in vertical motion, with a big old happy grin on her face. Woo hoo!!! Road trip!!!!!!
