You're right, I'm an idiot. I forgot it wasn' there I had to go looking other places.
I got these off another site, they may not be exactly right but I think it's pretty close. I'm curious as to why the girls are refered to as filles de roi because that term doesn't seem appropriate to call these girls in my understanding of the meaning. Any ideas? | |

I'm not sure they're all right but it certainly does help a lot thank you My understanding of the term filles du roi are young women brought to Canada chosen by the King to marry someone here to colonise the land so I can see how that could fit into the song. By the lyrics there the song seems a bit jumpy, it seems to not have a clear story line, how queer, i never would have guessed from listening to it.

NorthernSpy: I just about drove everyone I know nuts making them listen to Time Brings, to try figure out the words I could only hear as "rose hipped tomatoes" what ever the heck that might be, and how did that line fit in the song.
When I first listened to it with my mom, we thought he was singing "who have lost their tomatoes." And for Lukey? We sing "Aha, me boys are gettin' lattes." This seems to be a common mishap amongst our family and friends. Emily

Those lovely tomatoes are "rose-lipped maidens." Anne

lyndzchick:I have been wanting my grandfather ro take a look at those lyrics and tell me how he interprets them. He has always said acadians had their own language. He has alot of sayings that dont make much sence unless you know. His grandmother was from the french shore and he was born and raised in new brunswick.
It would be great to get his take on it,

I've been doing some minor research to satisfy my own curiosity (mostly to prove to myself I'm not completely nuts) and been doing some intense listening & watching of 6 different recordings of Excursion as done by GBS. Yes I AM bored. I have always sung that his was was "hauled on board of The Volunteer", whereas most other people sing "as a volunteer". There as a few different versions of the song out there (no surprise) and both appear. Wikipedia lists The Volunteer as "a ship operating in Conception Bay in the late 19th century". I am fairly sure that's what Alan sings and completely sure it's what Darrell sang. As for pure oil vs tear oil, I found both of those versions too but after raising the volume on my ear phones waaaay too loud for all 6 versions I am, again, fairly sure that Alan sings tear oil and even more sure that that's what Darrell sings. Now if only I knew what tear oil is and, after my investigations, who Matt Strong is. Or perhaps I should just get a life and admit I'm deaf to nuances of pronunciation.

"Get up Jack, John's in town" Although I sang it your way up until recently. I really don't think the "hop" referred to is a dance, it doesn't make much sense to me but I haven't yet proved otherwise. The man who wrote the song died in 1930, I don't think the word hop was used for a dance back then but who knows?

I always hear "Get up Jack, John sit down" too, and I always took it to mean, in context, that Jack is out of money, and so should get up and let John, who still has money, have his seat.

AnneInPhilly: Those lovely tomatoes are "rose-lipped maidens." Anne
Thanks Anne I had plucked those rose hipped tomatoes off the vine a while back and replaced my words after a Eureka moment and realized they were Rose lipped maidens, Now the song makes sense to me but, I still think rose hipped tomatoes and have a chuckle everytime I hear the song maybe it would seem inapropriate to others for me to laugh during this particular song but, I am laughing at myself, and my ability to imagine the weirdest things. Excursion's a big one that makes little sense to me, but lovely to hear and sing along even if I make up some of my own lyrics due to faulty hearing. I didn't hear pure oil or tear oil but, true oil is what I sing, although I'm not sure why we are rubbing it on her face?? Edited for spelling! apparently spelling can change the content of what one is saying

I go with that, Sharn. John has money and Jack doesn't apparently. And hop could also mean a short trip couldn't it? Like let's hop in the car and go down to the storre? Anne
