    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I have always sung  "It was on this Monday morning and the day be callin' fine."  I never knew it was "calm and fine" from the lyrics I just searched.  Actually I have never before looked at the lyrics.  LOL  I mean really I have sung this song so many times.. really.. I used to sing it on the way to work walking along the railroad track every morning.  I sing it like this "Oh me oh my I heard me oh I say"  not "Oh me oh my I heard me ol' wife say."

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

My daughter suddenly started singing it the other day, the chorus over and over again hand pumping and all (I nearly got a black eye). She was singing it "I heard me old man say" which I thought hilarious. She's only 5 so I doubt she changed it on purpose just because she's a girl. You have no idea how bad I am at the words for it, though you can get a taste earlier on in the thread when I mentioned that "she died, a load of brandy" before realizing it was the name of a river. I must say I love the way Alan sings it much more than Darrell. I love to hear the way he says certain words like "grin" (green) and "combing" (coming).

The hop is a dance - at least it was in the 50's. There were plenty of sock hops that my brother went to in high school. I assumed you danced in your socks. It was held at the local Catholic School so I don't think any hanky panky was going on. It makes sense in Excursion.

His wife was hauled on board accidentally - all the "b'ys" were going to a dance across the bay, but he was the only one "in the double" - the rest ere going to dance with some fine young ladies who were NOT their wives, I assume.

They were sock hops so that the women's shoes would not ruin the gym floor bouncing around.

It never occured to me that that's what he wanted, to take her dancing.

Are we sure they're going to a DANCE?  ( I do know a hop is a dance). It just doesn't seem to fit in to me.  Does anyone know if hop ever meant hospital as suggested?

I also though "bein in the double" was doubled over in laughter

I'm glad all the husbands think we're putting way too much thought into this!Angel

I always thought "hop" was hospital and "being in the double" meant he had had too much to drink. :)

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I think that "hop" is some shortened form of hospital too.  This line has had me stumped for so long, but the "get her something for a cure or take her to the hop" is what makes me think it must be a hospital.  I've looked it up online but I've never found anything to suggest that "hop" has been used to mean hospital, but I still think that that's what he means.

"Being in the double" I've always thought to mean doubled over in laughter. "And meself being in the double, with the funny things they'd say, they choke themselves from laughing when they'd see us in the bay."

But what the heck does "she died below the brandies" mean?

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I covered that one earlier in the thread where I thought he said that "She died, a load of brandys" as in she had too much to drink. I eventually figured out it was "below the Brandies", a body of water in Newfoundland.

I've decided that "hop" is some sort of medical centre and "Being in the double" had to do with laughing. Although I originally thought he was "beat in the double" making me very confused for the longest while as to what was going on in this song. What exactly is "tear oil" anyway?

Oh, that makes sense, the Brandies is a body of water.  Before asking, I should always first check out the map of Newfoundland!

I sing "tea oil," as in tea tree oil.  My friend sings "pure oil."  No clue.  Tear, tea or pure are: none makes much sense to me.

As long as no one is standing too close to me to hear me sing my wrong words or to get hit by my "Hey" flying fist, I'm a happy GBS fan!

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I may have mentioned this before somewhere, but at the beginning of Sept, Kaesye nearly gave a few black eyes doing that. She was singing the chorus over and over, fists and all. I'm short and she's just the right height.

Maybe it is pure oil but I still don't see how that would help make her better, but then old home remedies rarely make sense.

    Fran:

    No, Fran!

He wanted to go dancing! His "friends" pulled his wife on board "accidentally" as a joke I suppose. The song says they were going to "have a time" - that would indicate going to a dance, without their wives..

"pure oil" is the line and "in the double" I suppose meant doubled over but I also thought it meant he'd have to double up in his sleeeping quarters. Next time I see Darrell, I'm going to ask.

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I've been singing "hair oil" (in the sense of that goofy old Macassar stuff that Clark Gable or somebody might use) because I like the ridiculousness of it.

But then, I also often sing Heave Away as "Heave away, me jellyfish" just because it sounds so cool.

Love, Columbine (and don't get me started on It's A Long Way From Amphioxus)

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I always thought it was "I can't mary at all or a chockey i'll be" which made sense to me because supposedly getting married is like commiting suicide, you'll never be with anyone else again in your life

Also, can anyone help me with the lyrics for Trois Navires de Blé, their french i must say really isn't very good, but it is very entertaining to listen to tounge

    sencerily yours

If you're just looking for lyrics, they're under the "The Music" tab. I had to check them when making up a CD for my daughter to bring with her to daycare. I'm from Quebec and I understood very little of what Alan said outside of "Nous irons jouer sur le bord l'eau", I had to make sure nothing anyone might be offended was said. If you're looking for a translation, let me know.
