Re: Children with disabilities
Hi everybody. Sounds like we have had some real ups and downs since I was last in here. I am sorry for all of the heartache here but have rejoiced with the gains! We are doing ok. well, not really. The one diagnosis that we thought we could count out on they have now elimintaed. We have always thought she fit the pattern for CAPD but they tested her a couple of weeks ago and they said that while that may be a contributing factor its is not the main problem. They also said that her wiring is completely backwards. her right brain is taking over everything and that is usually what they see in kids that have suffered a traumatic brain injury, which she hasnt. They dont understand what is wrong at all. So we will be taking Karissa to the University of Utah next month to have a full neurological work up. I dont mind telling you that I am more than a little freaked out about it. I keep telling DH taht if they dont find anything I will be ok. At this point its just as important to me to know what it ISNT as it is to know what it is. If they doo al the tests and find that there is no reason for it then I think I will be ok with it. At least I will know in my heart that I have done everything *I* can. The rest will just be up to God. They are also saying that we wont be able to stay in the same school that she started in. They are too full and we have to apply for a rider every year. Apparently they dont want to approve that this year so we could really use some prayers there too. Anyway, that is where we are. The good news is her test scores all came in really high for the end of the year. She did amazingly well in reading and pretty good in math even.

Re: Children with disabilities
Binny...I'm not sure what to say about this situation with Karissa, but you, she and the rest of your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I know what you mean about being okay with finding out what it isn't. I had to take Chelsea to a specialist a few years ago because she was having leg pain and the xray revealed a cyst on her thigh bone. Of course I was scared to death. So when the specialist said it was nothing unusual and completely benign, I was very relieved and didn't much care why it was there so much as that it was nothing. She still has it checked every year to make sure it isn't growing and each time I am glad to find out it hasn't. The weather here has been STINKING hot for the last 3 days...extremely unusual high temps for this time of year. Currently it is 32 degrees and feels 36 (that's about 90 farenheit and feels 100). It's also humid. Ugh. I HATE humidity. Makes me very cranky (not to mention, I'm pms-ing and peri-menopausal!). It also makes the kids cranky. Cranky mom + cranky kids = unpleasantness, to say the least. We don't have central air, and Jim refused to put the air conditioner in because the temp is supposed to go down again (yeah right, WHEN?!), so I am my sister's place in the air conditioning. Guess what? No crankiness! Amazing. On a happy note, kind of, school is almost done. It's a real vacation for me because there's no homeschooling, but then again, BOTH kids home all day, every day...OY. Oh, Robin...your comment about Chelsea's hair...yes, she has beautiful hair, but it IS a pain to care for! Very thick and wavy. When she was little it was tight little curls (Adrian too). But as long as she wants it long and does what's required to care for it, I'm fine with it. She says that she's growing it till she's 23, then she's cutting it and donating it to make wigs for kids with cancer. They should get a couple wigs out of it by then! (when it's down, it's to the bottom of her bum now!) Have a great day everyone. Celebrating my dad's 65th today. Thankful for him, the rest of my family, my kids and our health...it's all good.

Re: Children with disabilities
Okay, air conditioner is in and people are less cranky! For some reason tho, our basement, where the computers are, is usually very cool and has been horribly hot, so Chelsea still comes upstairs whining, "I'm hoooooot". All you moms know what THAT sounds like! I think it is a very sick talent that children are given...the ability to turn a one syllable word into 10 syllables by whining! (And it only works for children. I tried it with my sister....she didn't give me my way! )

Re: Children with disabilities
Hot is gone from here now Trace so if you still got it, shouldn't be much longer. I like to tell my kids if the wine isn't in a glass I want no part of it! They get it now. Binny hang in there, you will just know when the Docs get it right. The fit will be right, and if they can't find a diagnosis that fits, celebrate the uniqueness of your child. Life's a beach, one day smooth sailing slight breeze no upsetting waves, then the storm hits...not going there today some things are better left unwritten. Aahhh the end of school , the panic to get all the end of term assignments completed (or those you put off and are now late) the unease of the pending exams in a course you had difficulty in, and black flies to boot! Summer is looking pretty good to me now! I am not ready to count the days until I am off to the rock yet, but once the calendar page gets turned that will be it. Now I'm still to busy enlisting friends and relatives to drop in and keep an eye on the house and those in it while we are gone.

Binny, I am praying for Karissa and your whole family. Not knowing and having to wait to find out is very hard. Please keep us posted on the results from Utah. Robin

Re: Children with disabilities
Happy Friday the 13th everyone! Adrian decided it may be best if he stayed home today...sad he feels that way, that there's a chance someone will use a date like this or April 1st to victimize him. And sadder still, he's probably right. Exams next week and then summer begins. Yay me.

Re: Children with disabilities
Emma was born on Friday the 13th. I should have known then what I was in for. LOL!! I hope Adrian enjoyed his day at home; it's sad he has to deal with such nonsense at school. Have a good weekend. Robin

Re: Children with disabilities
Some good news for a sad situation. Last night was a benefit for my cousin Brady. At 6 months old he was diagnosed with Lukemia. Last year he went into remission but about 3 months ago it came back hard. His only hope is a bone marrow transplant. Luckly they found a doner but that means he will have to go to Toronto for the procedure and who knows how long they will be there. Last night 8000$ was raised to help His family to go to Toronto. They still have a long road a head of them but at least money is one thing they dont have to worry about.

Re: Children with disabilities
Lyndz I will keep your cousin in my prayers. Do they have Ronald McDonald houses there? Sort of like Daffodil Place. That is where Lukey and his mum are staying while in Salt Lake away from family. Trace, I am so sorry that Adrian feels that way. That is terrible!! It makes me want to go knock some heads together! DId everyone survive Friday the 13th? It was non eventful here but I dont hold much to that theory anyway.

Re: Children with disabilities
They do have Ronald houses and Rotels but I think she said it would still cost them about 2400 a month. Here in Ottawa its 19$ a day. Someone told them to plead to local hotels it might be cheaper but they would be too far away. Please also say prayers for Bradys brother and sister. They are 14 and 18. Travis who is the older one has been dealing with things well, but his sister has been having a hard time. At the age where a young girl needs her mom, she hasnt really had one.For almost a year Cindy stayed at the hospital because she was breast feeding. Kayla has been lashing out.Shes been smoking and wants to move in with her dad who is a real bum. When Cindy and Tom got married it was like a fairy tale. He is a prison guard. In the last few years all I have hered is how much of a jerk he is. All I saw on Sat night was a broken man. When he came up and hugged me and said "Were bringing Brady home" I couldnt hold back the tears. The whold family needs prayers. I hadnt even thought that there was a chance Brady wouldnt be coming home. It makes me thank god how lucky we were with Alex.

Re: Children with disabilities
The Canadian cancer society has a house in Toronto as well for folks that are there for surgery/treatments. My sister and her husband stayed there when he needed surgery and treatment in Toronto. I am not sure what it is called but if you call your local cancer society they would probably have information. I believe they also shuttle patients to various hospitals for treatments as well.

Re: Children with disabilities
THIS is absolutely dispicable and makes my blood boil!... Morningside students vote out classmate, 5 By Colleen Wixon (Contact) Saturday, May 24, 2008 Photo provided by the family After each classmate was allowed to say what they didn't like about Barton's 5-year-old son, Alex, his Morningside Elementary teacher Wendy Portillo said they were going to take a vote, Barton said. By a 14 to 2 margin, the students voted Alex — who is in the process of being diagnosed with autism — out of the class. Melissa Barton filed a complaint with Morningside's school resource officer, who investigated the matter, Port St. Lucie Department spokeswoman Michelle Steele said. But the state attorney's office concluded the matter did not meet the criteria for emotional child abuse, so no criminal charges will be filed, Steele said. Port St. Lucie Police no longer are investigating, but police officials are documenting the complaint, she said. Steele said the teacher confirmed the incident took place. Portillo could not be reached for comment Friday. Steele said the boy had been sent to the principal's office because of disciplinary issues. When he returned, Portillo made him go to the front of the room as a form of punishment, she said. Barton said her son is in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a type of high-functioning autism. Alex began the testing process in February at the suggestion of Morningside Principal Marcia Cully. Children diagnosed with Asperger's often exhibit social isolation and eccentric behavior.. Alex has had disciplinary issues because of his disability, Barton said. After the family moved into the area and Alex and his sibling arrived at the school in January, Alex spent much of the time in the principal's office, she said. He also had problems at his last school, but he did not have issues during his two years of preschool, Barton said. School and district officials have met with Barton and her son to create an individual education plan to address his difficulties, she said. Portillo attended these meetings, Barton said. Barton said after the vote, Portillo asked Alex how he felt. "He said, 'I feel sad,' " Barton said. Alex left the classroom and spent the rest of the day in the nurse's office, she said. Barton said when she came to pick up her son at the school Wednesday, he was leaving the nurse's office. "He was shaken up," she said. Barton said the nurse told her to talk with Portillo, who told her what happened. Alex hasn't been back to school since then, and Barton said he won't be returning. He starts screaming when she brings him with her to drop off his sibling at school. Thursday night, his mother heard him saying "I'm not special" over and over. Barton said Alex is reliving the incident. The other students said he was "disgusting" and "annoying," Barton said. "He was incredibly upset," Barton said. "The only friend he has ever made in his life was forced to do this." St. Lucie School's spokeswoman Janice Karst said the district is investigating the incident, but could not make any further comment. Vern Melvin, Department of Children and Families circuit administrator, confirmed the agency is investigating an allegation of abuse at Morningside but said he could not elaborate

Re: Children with disabilities
What shocks me the most isn't even that the teacher or the school itself wanted him gone. I can't believe that no matter how many problems the teacher was having with him, how ill-equiped she may have been to handle a child like him, that the teacher would involve the other children in any way in the process. She and the school can come up with as many reasonable and unreasonable excuses as they want for wanting the child out of there but there is absolutely nothing they can say to defend themselves for doing that.
