at my first show when he asked me 'Whats your name?" and I replied "What did you say?" ... 'Your name?"  he said ...."Oh!  Oh...sorry...Helen"  Did I feel foolish or what? Such a simple question!  He just talks so fast and with that accent...lovely as it may be!

I had the exact same exchange one evening with Mandy Patinkin!  Though I can blame part of my 'mis-hearing' him on all my coworkers heckling me for asking him for an autograph while we were loading out.Cool  He was very sweet, even though he laughed at me for it!

I so completely and totally love Mandy Patinkin.  I'm thoroughly jealous.  And just to keep it sort of on topic, I used to think he was saying "Hello, my name is Indigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die."  It's not Indigo, that's a colour, it's Inigo.

Thanks alot Fran for starting this thread (heavily loaded with sarcasm). Yesterday Im cleaning the house listening to GBS of course, and kept second guessing my lyrics. I ran to the computer four or five times I swear.

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

When this thread first started, I couldn't think of any GBS lyrics I sang incorrectly (or at least realized I was singing incorrectly) until I was at work the other day listening to Mari Mac.  I was singing "gonna be a fort night for every man that's there."  A two week long wedding always struck me as odd, and so Shakespearian, then I remembered reading "fork and knife."  D'oh!  That makes a little more sense!

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

Always glad to help you out Lyndz **snicker** I started the thread in the hopes of learning I wasn't a complete wacko and, if nothing else, I could provide some entertainment if I was. Considering many of the misheard song lyrics that are posted are followed by someone who says "yeh, that's what I thought at first too" and then often a second "you mean that's not the line" we can just blame it all on the B'ys. They have to repeat The Rain In Spain.. a hundred times before bed every night.

Bet: I heard something about a fort night in Mari-Mac too.

Well, at least Im grateful that I know its not virgin whites. Can I stop myself from singing it that way, nine out of 10, no, but at least I know. I wasnt sure what the words were in that verse of Mary Mac were, and I did hear a fort night as well, I thank the kereoke version of the video for the reason I sing that one right.

    This is from celtic-lyrics.com.

Sure to be a grand affair, grander than a fair
Going to be a fork and plate for every man that's there
And I'll be a bugger if I don't get my share
If I don't we'll be very much mistaken

2 things for the record:  1) I always heard plate, thought I must have been mistaken when you all were saying knife, but this site bears me out.

    2) That being said, I still don't "get" this verse.  Well, most of it makes sense to me but what the Sam Hill is meant by "If I don't we'll be very much mistaken"??  And I'm certain Sean sings it "If I do I'll be very much mistaken."  Neither, as far as I can see, makes any sense.

Hmmm...well I can only relate what I've always taken it to mean, but that doesn't mean I'm right.  I could be playing left of center when it comes to the meaning of the song.  *lol*

On one hand, I simply think of that verse as relating the insanity that wedding planning can be (going to be a grand affair, grander than a fair) and that in all the hubbub, if they make a mistake and don't have enough food (often the biggest concern for a wedding reception) then he's going to be out of a meal.

On the other hand, I sometimes have a somewhat randy interpretation of the song.....In that case, I think the song implies that the guy was caught in a compromising situation with Mari "up among the heather and the hills..." and both mothers are forcing him to make an honest woman out of the gal,  that he's venting about the situation and how out of control it feels...And if he doesn't even get a meal on his wedding day because no one is even thinking of him and it's all about Mari, then he's really buggered and the wedding is a huge mistake.  Or even worse, since "bugger" can mean "fool" perhaps he's not talking about the food when he's talking about getting his share.  Lots of guys were after Mari and maybe he's worried that if he's not careful, wedding or no, he won't be the only one enjoying Mari.

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I went with the randy interpretation but I figured if he doesn't get his marital "meal" he won't be happy. SOunds like they've already consumated the relationship to me. Hence My mother's making me marry Mari Mac.

I get all that-its how the last line of the verse fits that I don't get, whether it's if I do, I'll be very much mistaken or if I don't, we'll be very much mistaken....maybe I'm just obtuse.

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I've often wondered what exactly he meant in that song. He sounds as if he really likes Mari, he's courting her after all, but they're being forced by their mothers to marry and doesn't he say that "Marriage is an awful undertaking"? But I guess he's not ready to settle down and prefers to play around in the heather with other bonnie lasses. I'm not so sure anything's actually happened with Mari (since no other guys have managed to get her on her back and Mari is so constantly escorted by her mother that "people often wonder if it's Mari or her Mother" that he's courting).

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

I just found the words to the traditional Mary Mack. Slight difference in lyrics and arrangement of chorus but the biggest difference is one verse that sheds a lot of light on why he wants to marry her.

Now this wee lass she has a lot of cash,
she has a lot of brass...her father thinks I'm gas,
I'd be a silly ass to let the matter pass,
Her father thinks she suits me very fairly.

The version I found had no verse about the Fork and plate festivities so it doesn't shed any light on it.

Just had a thought, with the missing verse above, his "share" could mean the money and if he doesn't get any (a lot of money's going into the wedding and everyone else is getting their share with food and alcohol) then I think "we'll be very much mistaken" could be more of a "if you think I'm not getting my share, you're very mistaken".

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

My husband thinks share is finally getting Mary on her back, and as for the last verse he says he remembers when we got married all the work that went into it, it was expected to be a great time. But he remembers thinking the morning of, if anything went wrong he would be p'd off. So poets licence , if he didnt get p'd pff, he would have been mistaken. He also thinks we must have a lot of time on our hands to be putting so much thought into the song. The writer was probably well into the wiskey when he wrote it. lol.

My husband would agree with yours about putting too much thought into the song.
