Board emails...can we turn them completely off?
I was noticing that it is possible to send either an email or a PM to another board member when you chose the option to contact another OKPer. I've had the opportunity to play around with this, and I've found even when you have selected to not have emails sent from the board that you will still receive them if sent via the Contact option in a post. What I'm wondering is if there is a way to completely block this? Yes, I'm aware that it is possible to set up a filter in your mail program but most people have no clue how to do this...and with there being several different email programs out there, and several different level of technical ability/understanding in my opinion as a techie it would be simpler to see if there is a setting change that can be made through the board programming that will block the emails from being sent from the board in the first place. I have played around with my profile settings and have found that nothing you select in there will block the emails from coming through. So, is there a tried and true way to stop people from sending emails through the board? Thanks muchly!

Go to hotmail.com, yahoo.com, excite.com, or any other free webmail site, and sign up for a free email account. Then in your Profile here on the board, change your email address to that one. You'll have to go in and delete all the old emails now and then, or they'll delete the account for inactivity, but at least they won't land in your daily mailbox. It's nice to have a second email anyway, to send yourself test emails when your home account isn't working, and as an "order confirmation email" for retailers from whom you buy online to swap around to all their spammer friends. Oh My Fred. Is THAT where the Viagra ads are coming from??!!?? I almost NEVER use my work email address but used it on this site when ordering tickets and for some reason my other account wasn't working. Up until that time, I had never gotten any spam at work. Harumph!

I don't use my work address for any subscriptions, distribution lists, message boards, ordering merchandise, and so on. Yet I still get junk mail sent to that address. It happens.

Re: Board emails...can we turn them completely off?
All of these are good suggestions, but my point really is why should we have to use a dummy email, or anything like that? This is the first board I have ever been on where I can be contacted directly via email even with the option to have emails sent turned off. What I would really like to see is the option to directly email another OKPer via this message board removed. The way this is set up currently is that if you want to you can search through all the members and click on one, click on contact and choose either email or PM....

Re: Board emails...can we turn them completely off?
I'm not sure we need to completely do away with the e-mail option all together. I agree totally that there should be a way to block it if you DON'T want it, but lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater. I know that when I get a PM here, it shows up in my e-mial inbox as well, maybe that's what's happening? I'm the furthest thing from a techie-with the older set up, you could choose that as an option or not. I don't recall choosing that option with the new set up, but I just left things as they were. If indeed that's what's happening, there should indeed be a way to prevent PM's from showing up in your e-mail inbox, and I agree that if you don't want to use PM's you shold be able to disable them. But lets not do away with them altogether, for everyone.

Re: Board emails...can we turn them completely off?
No Sharn, It's definately NOT PM notifications. These are
emails sent through GBS.com If you look at the posts in the upper
right hand corner is a drop down box named "contact" if you click on it
once the drop down gives four options Send so and so an email Send so and so a PM View So and So's profile Find posts by So and So If you send them an email it goes to what ever email you registered with. And has a Header Message of "
This email was sent from a user at GreatBigSea.com. Replying
to this email will be sent back to the user via normal
email." And selecting "NO" to receive emails under email options in your profile doesn't stop it.

Re: Board emails...can we turn them completely off?
So this is where are the crap spam is coming from? I thought it was one of the sites my boys go to. Is there anyway to change what email account this place has? I tried to look in profile, but no luck. I've got to put an end to the spam in my inbox it's becoming a huge problem here . I've been seriously considering changing email addys for my "everyday" email, if I can't change the email settings for this board, I think I shall be finding a new email addy. It's getting insane! And if someone checked "no" to recieving emails from this board, they should not be getting them at all. No one should be able to access me unless I so choose it. Period. Later, Meg. *off to try one more time to change my email address this acccount is registered to before finding a new addy altogether*

Re: Board emails...can we turn them completely off?
No, Sapphire. I don't think the spam you're talking about is coming from this board. Being spammed is part of being on the internet. It comes from unscrupoulous merchants, webmasters and such that actually *sell* info to spammers. Some of it is garnered from cookies placed on your computer by some sites...and I don't beleive the OKP is doing that. Even a cursory reading of the Privacy policy will tell you that they don't sell our info. Many sites do, as well as placing cookies that track your movements on the web and others that "mine" your computer for info. A daily cleaning of your computer with something like LavaSoft's Ad-aware SE and Spybot will help immenesly. The emails Bonnie and I were talking about are emails sent from fellow OKP'ers through the contact button in each post. For example when Bonnie and I were trying to figure out how to shut the emails off She sent me an email through that button and I got it with the "header" for lack of a better term seen above. Changing your email here to a dummy account will work to a point but what happens when updates or announcement come to that account that you WANT to know about? Or other such scenarios.
