    Pencil Portraits

I've already posted this pic in the Alanite (Doyleophiles, whatever) forum, but I thought I'd start a thread here. I mean to do all the b'yes, but Alan's first. Here he is: (tell me what you think; I'm open to critiques!)

The only thing for critique is the line of the nose and shape of lips have some artistic license, but that my friend is nitpicking. I am a critical person, and I am very impressed too by the intensity you captured. The eyes and eyebrows are dead on. I like the top of his head being wide open to the world too. Big Smile

You do excellent work. I hope you are impressed with this yourself.

Wow!   Great job LittleOne!   I don't usually talk about the b'ys features on the board, but I have to say that I love the indent between Alan's nose and his upper lip.  I know there is a name for this area, but for the life of me I can't think of what it is right now.

According to Wikipedia, it's called a "philtrum" (from the Greek philein, "to love.")

    Re: Pencil Portraits

Many thanks for all your wonderful compliments. I feel compelled to say here, however (and it should have occured to me before, but I actually didn't think about it until I received a thoughtful PM from someone): this isn't quite my work. I copied nearly exactly another artist's work, namely Andrew Macnaughtan's picture from the jacket of the Sea of No Cares CD. My only reason for drawing it and displaying said drawing it because it's one of the best pics of Alan I've come across. I certainly have no intentions of making any money with it, and don't claim the image for my own in any way. Thank you. :)

I didn't really want to finish the top of his head... I have troubles with drawing hair. Also, I didn't want to shadow the top of his forehead and draw (ar har--no pun intended) attention away from his eyes.
Yeah, the nose is off a little bit. If you look at the pic I took it from, one can hardly make out any defining lines for his nose.
Glad you liked the eyes. They were the part I spent the most time on... I'm glad they came out so well. Even so, if you look closely, you'll see that his right eye is spaced juuussst a little too far from his nose... I like the left eye best.
