    Jack O'Lanterns!

Hey, they're sculpture!  And folk art besides!  Let's see your jack o'lanterns!

I tried a Jacquie-lantern this year - meet Pumpkinella.  The smoochy mouth came out a bit odd, but I quite like the wink!

    Re: Jack O'Lanterns!

I've still got to find ideas for ours. I do have until Tuesday xP

I'm thinking carving a running horse on it or something, but hey, a classic Jack O'Lantern face might just be what comes out. :]

That's a sweet carving, Columbine! Do you use a knife or a jigsaw to cut it out (Yeah, we use a jigsaw...talk about a family dependant on power tools)?

That's awesome Col.  Living in an apt, I haven't had a pumpkin in years.  Methinks I might have to go trick or treatin' just to look at a few this year.

    Sandy,

my son carves pineapples for Halloween in addition to pumpkins. He says it's really cool because after you core it and eat the insides, it's not too hard to carve. And when you put the candle inside, it shines out all the spines too for a neat effect.

    Re: Jack O'Lanterns!

kiddies and I did the pumpkin thing yesterday.  ya, um, don't think she's gonna make it till tuesday.  I had it sitting on my kitchen counter, but had to transfer it to the front stoop cause it was leaking smelly punkin juice all over the counter.  We may have to relegate this one to the compost heap and have another go--too bad too, cause we got one that was all warty to begin with, so even with a fairly simple face it looked really good.

Anne, one year we did a totem pole type thing, and carved out all kinds of gourds and squashes, it looked really cool!  Never thought of the pineapple, that would be cool!

And HEY, get me, 2,000 posts!!

    Re: Jack O'Lanterns!

So I'm at a Dixie Chicks concert last night and shortly before the Chicks hit the stage, the Dixie kidlets came out with their (I assume) nannies and placed some Jack O'Laterns on the risers.  Added a little "something" (not to mention *aaawww* factor) to the stage.

    Re: Jack O'Lanterns!

Total randomness about Jack O'Lanterns - they were invented in a place (Ireland) that didn't have any pumpkins at the time, so the first ones were carved out of TURNIPS!  Can you imagine how long that would take, to make a Jack O'Turnip?

    Re: Jack O'Lanterns!

I have an old pepper squash in the kitchen that I should add to the 2 big pLumpkins we bought yesterday.

Like Mallory, I'm still coming up with design ideas. I want to try something different this year. I will photograph and post them when finished.

Kudos on the cool, coy Jack O'Lantern Columbine.

    Re: Jack O'Lanterns!

Carving pumpkins might be ALL we do to celebrate Halloween tonight. It's definately warm enough for trick-or-treating, (close to 60 degrees F/15 degrees C - unseasonably mild for Ohio) but it's pouring down rain here. Yesterday, with its 70 degrees of sunny gloriousness, would have been ideal for tricks and treats. At least we have buckets of candy (that we're unlikely to give away) with which to drown our sorrows. Smile

    Happy Halloween, everyone!

    Baldie, that's punkin' brilliant!

Love, Columbine (who brought the stalwart but somewhat overwhelmed Pumpkinella to her final rest in the compost bin today.  Indoors is a rough place for a jack o'lantern, but she did yeoman service.)
