    If I ever go there....

I am not putting cod tongues in my mouth. Not no way not no how. I'll KISS it, sure, I'm game, but nu-uh, no way, not gonna taste something that can taste me back.

Nor seal flipper anything, thanks much. To paraphrase Mike Myers in "So I Married an Ax Murderer" it sounds to me like Newfoundland's cuisine was based on a dare. As in "I dare you to eat that!!"

I like cod tongues myself!! I've never had seal flipper but seal meat is pretty good too!! I haven't been home in over 8 years but I sure miss the cuisine in Newfoundland.

I don't think I'd eat any type of fish. But then again I just don't like fish. Blech. *makes a yucky face*

I'll tell ya one thing I would do for sure. I'd hit every bar and pub that I could. Now that would be fun. Big Grin

Re: If I ever go there....

Going next summer and can't wait...I'm not a big fish/seafood eater, either, but I'm up for tasting seal if it's on the menu. I just want to see it all - I'm really looking forward to the ferry ride, which I know is silly because I live on the coast and can con any number of boat-owning friends any time I want, but we live on Long Island Sound, not the Atlantic Ocean, so our water's pretty tame.

I want to see icebergs, whales, puffins and George Street, but not necessarily in that order.

    Cheers!

I want to stand on high rocky cliffs looking out to sea. I want to see an iceberg. I like fish, I want to try Newfoundland cuisine, I'll try anything once...I think. I want to see the sun come up on Cape Speer.

Re: If I ever go there....

I'd try a cod tongue, at least once, and if I liked it, I'd try another. I may have to draw the line at seal flipper though...up here, the natives eat alot of that sort of thing, but they often like to ferment it, which was fine when they only used cheesecloth and that sort of thing for the fermentation process. But now stuff like Tupperware is on the scene, which is airtight vs. cheesecloth that allows it to breathe a little. Before I got my second degree and started working as a paralegal, I was a respiratory therapist, and I dealt with too many cases of botulism while working in the Native hospital up here (Tupperware, being airtight, allows the anaerobic botulism spores to grow.) We'd get entire families coming in from the village at 9 or 10 pm after becoming symptomatic after dinner, the worse cases usually being the moms (who cooked and tasted along the way thus got the biggest dose and the most severe case). Sooo, long story short (ok, it's too late for that), I just don't think I could bring myself to actually raise seal flipper to my lips.

Re: If I ever go there....

I just came back, and Sharn, the cod tongues were not too bad, they were very good to be honest. One just has to forget what they are eating the first time around, lol.
The food, oh my goodness, it is amazing. *drool*
Jana, the sunsets are great, but the sunrises are amazing too. Here is a pic of the sunrise at Carbonear:

As for scenery, here is a pic of a warerfall at Gros Morne:

Newfoundland is a beautful place, filled with kind people, good food and great music. If you have the oppertunity to go there someday, I would highly reccomend that you do.

Very awesome pictures Carol! I had a look at them all from your photobucket. I LOVE that waterfall pic! I'm gonna email you cause I got some questions about your trip. And don't worry I'm not going to ask about that one drunken night. Wink

Re: If I ever go there....

Wow, that waterfall pic is a mind blower. Definately want to get there some day. Wanna do all the provinces some day-my sister just did a blitz last summer, she's done the "lower" maritimes and lived in B.C. for 4 years, done Onatrio (obviously) and Quebec, and this summer she and a buddy drove out west through all the prairies and then the northern territories. She still has yet to hit Nunavit, and Newfoundland. Hmmmmmm, maybe if I save my pennies I can swing a trip with her this summer! (Crossing fingers and toes)

(still not putting cod tongues in my mouth)

I would like to take this opportunity to speak up in favour of cod tongues. It's not a tongue like... a tongue. It's the throat-piece of the cod and it in no way resembles what one would traditionally think of when the word "tongue" comes to mind. They're actually really good, I think. Wink

Re: If I ever go there....

OK, so are they salty? Taste like fish? Slimy? What sensations and taste bud use does one experience when trying a cod tongue anyway?

Re: If I ever go there....

    Salty? Yes, generally fairly salty.

Taste like fish? Yes, in a good way. It tastes like cod does, but it has more flavour. It's described as the tastiest part of the cod, and it's not as dry and flakey as cod tends to be.

Slimey? Shouldn't be. Typically they're served pan-fried (I've seen them advertised at restaurants deep-fried as well, but I've never had them that way and it sounds a little bit gross to me.) Sometimes when people cook them for the first time at home, they are slimey, because they didn't realize you have to take off the jelly, which is all squishy and will never firm up no matter how long you cook them. Restaurants will not make this mistake. The tongues themselves become firmer as they cook just like any cut of fish. As you would be a first time cod tongue eater, I recommend having them at a restaurant or having someone who's made them before cook them for you.

Basically, they're just a good cut of fish. You'd never know it was a "tongue" just from eating them.
