    The Vault

Ok so one of my favorite moments from the toronto show was when they pulled Let It Go outta cobb webs and took it out for a drive and it got me thinking that there are so many songs that end up in the vault tht id love to hear live again or just see brought out for a go and i wanted to see if there are songs taht the rest of you would like to see get their due or get thier due again. For me its gotta be:

Chemical Workers Song (one of the first GBS tunes that really got into my soul)

    and

What are Ya' at? (captures that true Newfoundland charm like few others)

    Re: The Vault

Chemical Worker's Song isn't actually in the vault. They played it a few times during the last tour. I think I was lucky enough to hear it twice.

I don't know if anyone else has heard it in recent years but I'd love Yarmouthtown, Fisherman's Lament and Demasduit Dream. Would LOVE to hear Metrobus but I'm pretty sure that's highly unlikely. It's not vaulted but I haven't been lucky enough to hear Widow in the Window and am wondering why in 14 concerts I've only heard The Mermaid once in 2006. Do they do it anymore?

Jolly Roving Tar, Wave Over Wave and Fast As I Can would be delightful. And if Bob could play a TUNES selection with Auntie Mary, I'd be over the edge.

All of those sound great. I'd add French Perfume, Lucky Me, A Boat Like Gideon Brown, Captain Wedderburn .... I'm a sucker for the songs that tell stories like everything on the Hard and the Easy.

    Hello all!

A week on from Toronto and i'm still buzzing ! Actually having a wee session at the moment, got the i-tunes on random play from all GBS albums, bringing some tears to my eyes let me tell you!

Toronto was my first full gig although i did catch the lads as a support act to Runrig a couple years back.

I agree with Lisa, Gideon Brown is one of my faves (coming from a fishing village myself this song strikes quite a few chords, pardon the pun!!).

Although i was more than delighted with the show, here are (just a few) songs that wouldn't have gone amiss if the band played for another half an hour.....

    Someday Soon

    Something I Should Know

    Goin' Up

    My Apology

    Dance Dance

    All the  very best !

I think they should pull Darrell out of the vault... Jakey's Gin anyone?

And we wake up in the breakdown of the things we never thought we could be...

    Re: The Vault

I wonder why they stopped doing that one. It's, generally, a well loved song and Sean would do a great job at it (or Bob).

    Re: The Vault

yup - Gideon Brown and Fast As I Can for sure - LOVE those!!  the lists could likely go on and on though!  Is there really anything they could pull out of the vault that we wouldn't be happy about?!

    Re: The Vault

Apparently, the like to play "The Mermaid" on cruises, because they've been playing it on the last two Ships and Dip cruises. It's true that there are a lot of songs that I wish I could hear too. I wonder if they think people will not have as good of a time, if they don't hear all the hits, all the time. I loved that last March in Chicago, they made sure we heard a bunch of different songs on both nights. That was GREAT!

    Re: The Vault

I think they do think people want all the hits all the time. The 1st time Sean did Merasheen he asked after the show if people were upset he didn't do General Taylor. I love General Taylor but alternating it with Merasheen would be greatly appreciated.

Bob does a great job on Jakey's Gin! He treated us in St. Paul 2007. Definitely should pull that one out of the vault.

    Re: The Vault

I wouldn't say that i need them to play all the hits at each show and, as suggested by me starting this thread, i love the vault items but if the lights didnt go down before the last song of their last set of the night and that tell tale light house beacon sound didnt ring through the venue i think i might cry...most nights i cry neways because it means its almost over lol

Are you referring to the Morse Code SOS signal in Ordinary Day?  Listen closely...three short, three long, three short...hopefully not coming from a light house!!

I've been pining away for a Fast As I Can solo encore from Alan forever.  And after 5+ years and over 50 shows, I've never once heard Goin' Up, which was the song that started It All for me.

In defense of the b'ys, many of the songs we're requesting haven't been played live in a long time, if ever.  It takes hours of rehearsal to get a single song performance-ready.  Some of them simply can't be performed live because of "studio magic" on the recordings...overdubbing and additional instruments brought in to the studio that can't be recreated on a live stage.  They tend to stick to the songs they can play in their sleep...especially for the big shows.  Having a set list they're comfortable with minimizes their performance anxiety.  Hopefully we can look forward to some new additions as they prepare for the new cd...remember 1,2,3,4 (Hold on for Your Life)?  It evolved on stage, but didn't make it onto the cd.  Although it's  appearance on the set list was limited, it was a real treat if you got to hear it!

    Cheers!
