Go to a computer professional and see if you can recover your hard drive. Most likely, it's just your motherboard that's fucked up, and the rest of it (iTunes, songs, documents) are recoverable.

And consider the bright side. You've still got something to lick!

When in doubt, blame the cat... dogs (and particularly beagles who are first amongst Dog's elect) are infallible and it had nothing to do with ball licking... though I am told that ball licking is best done on a sunny patch of grass.

Dearest Tosh...a laptop...that's nothing! In my time I have managed to eat my way through my owner's shoes, sheets, carpeting, my crate and even some dry wall!

Don't worry, Sean, like all good owners will still love you and lavish you with treats once he gets over the loss.

After all, how can you not love an animal that can lick his bits and pieces and then turn around and give you a big wet one in the next moment!

I guess that goes for Karma too. You can recover from anything but death, Tosh, unless you're Lazarus or Edward Cullen. McCann's hard drive will be fine too, with any luck.

On another not unrelated note, Happy Birthday Great Big Sea b'ys! It's sweet Sixteen today! I remember mine, a live band with full drum kit in my best friend's living room & all the china packed away in the garage. Laptops were a thing of sci-fi fantasy, and the wine flowed illegally. We may even have spilled a bit here and there. Lap it up.

Tosh, I suggest you just stick close to the Mistress for a while. I'm guessing the incident was followed by the Master getting into trouble for having left the bottle out sitting around to begin with. That's probably what he's most peeved about, he got himself into trouble too. She'll protect ya.

Sorry your laptop got ruined (hopefully not your beautiful songs saved in it, though), and sorry that delicious Shiraz got enjoyed by the infamous road rug. Such a waste.

OK - I'll be the fish that takes the bait. What exactly is a dog who doesn't drink anymore doing with an open bottle of wine on his coffee table anyway? Practicing temptation avoidance? Or have you given up the giving up?

It is a well known fact in my house that dog's brains are not connected to their hind ends. My dog - variously known as "Ace" (her name), "CornDog" (her job title), or "WreckingBall" (her favorite hobby) - seems genuinely surprised by the crashes, bangs and showers of beverages that follow her around. She has no idea she is responsible for it. She just moves around the house bumping into furniture, sweeping keys off coffee tables, stepping on the cat, spilling glasses, cups and bottles of various beverages on the floor... At any rate, as my husband said the other day while I lay on the floor bleeding from my own feline-related near death experience, "Cats are not pointless" (although this rambling paragraph seems to be). But just to be on the safe side, maybe you could try keeping your privates private? That's why they're called that, you know.

PS - Chiarascura's right. Take your laptop to a computer store, they will be able to stick your old hard drive in a new laptop and save all your data. At least they could for me, when my computer died a slow & agonizing death. Saved my 20GB of itunes, 10 yrs. of photos & my entire life's work of research, writing, & art. Although mine is a pc rather than a mac.

Oh, &^*%. There are some great computer whiz/data retrieval folks out there who can fix damage. Is there a backup, anywhere? Maybe a flash drive, add’l hard drive or emailing the important stuff to self? (If that doesn’t help, now, hopefully in the future.) Perhaps it was a loving, helpful intervention regarding the shiraz, and happened to avoid a worse mishap.
Here’s hoping it is fixed soon, as those little machines are somewhat of a “lifeline.” It’s ok, as you don’t have access to the shower to take care of cleaning, it happens.
Was it at least worth something to see the look of surprise on the cat’s face?

Tough break on that Sean. It is difficult losing any artistic work. Hopefully there are some backups of the personal 'important stuff' as well as the music and writing? and I'm sorry if you were using the mac to "see and talk" with family as well. Maybe you could 'borrow' a certain drummers coveted phone if that is the case?

Sorry about the negative feelings you have been having. Life can be difficult there, and depending where the negative feelings are coming from hard to get past. It is hard to not compare ourselves to other fortunate people, wishing that we had what they had, that we weren't so frocked up, that our life was a bit more tameable. It it hard when we feel alone in the crowd. I hope you can learn to see your way through this building negativity, a way to accept the hand you've been dealt, I hope you can again get past the point of self-doubt and trouble, to the point to see where fortune favors you, and can learn to be happy, to want to see people succeed.

Hope the Mac can get dried out and you get a chance to visit a mac store to get this mess cleaned out. Likewise maybe this was not a bad karma sign, as you are going in to have your mac looked at, maybe the I-phone isn't that expensive and you can get one? to quote you "Karma may be a total bitch" however sometimes she's on your side.

As someone that used to do tech support on laptops I think your harddrive might be safe but your motherboard is likely toast. If you know somebody with the same model of Mac see about swapping the harddrive out long enough to test it...or if you aren't comfortable doing that yourself ask around to find somebody who can or just go to a Mac authorized tech. I think that is one at MUN these days, in the basement of the QEII Library. Maybe see if Spencer will aid in finding out if your hdd is still alive if you don't wish to risk getting mobbed at MUN. Really, your data should be alright once everything dries.

A bottle of Shiraz??? next to a fine Macbook???? McCann buddy you had it coming! If a dog or cat are near a laptop with a bottle of Shiraz next to it there is bound to be hell's water coming at ya for the small mistake. Just take 'er easy on Tosh. However i hope you did get a shot or two of the Shiraz before the crisis happened???? Well if not, here is a glass of rum to ya!

It's true Karma is rough. The further we stray, the harder it pulls us back. Thankfully, the gods are (usually) kind and give us little nudges when something is amiss before we go too far astray. We feel their gentle whispers and less gentle prods and yes, sometimes the right-hook sucker punch (and let me tell you, they don't miss. Ever. :) So...be grateful the laptop didn't land on the pup, who can now continue with his beauty routine. And when all else fails, "always look on the bright side of life" (Monty's Python's Life of Brian).
