BILLBOARD DEBUT

A huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the release of Safe Upon The Shore last week. The album debuted at #2 on the Canadian top 100 Billboard charts and at #4 on the US Billboard heatseekers chart (#159 overall). It’s the biggest GBS debut since Sea of No Cares debuted at #1 in 2002!

Congratulations boys!  And I can genuinely say that the pleasure was all mine in purchasing Safe Upon the Shore as soon as it was released.

It is kind of interesting, though, that the last super-successful release was Sea of No Cares.  It's not that Sea of No Cares is a bad CD or anything (it's great!, just like all the others), it just seems to me that popularity should gradually increase over time.  I wonder what accounted for the dip between SONC and SUTS?

In answer to Paddy's comment:

It has to be the producer in my book.  Michael Phillip Wojewoda on SB, Hawksley Workman on FF. The b'ys, Bob in particular, have gone on record (see GBS podcast #1) as saying that Wojewoda wasn't exactly Merry Mr. Sunshine to work with. The resulting record, while posessing some moments of glory, wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. What worked for BNL on Gordon fell short in my eyes with our b'ys.

As for Hawksley and FF, about whom GBS raved, I think he let his ego muscle its way into the mix. I read an Amazon reviewer who described most of the first half of the record as "cannon fodder".  Based on what we as fans saw Hawksley doing on the session video clips, I'm inclined to agree.  Far too pop-friendly, not enough Newfie folk swagger.

The Hard & The Easy---all old songs, a total rush from beginning to end. Who was at the controls there? Bob, Alan, & Sean! They knew what they wanted & what we as fans would want, so they did it themselves! Even though Bob said it was a vanity project, it let us know exactly what their home is made of and why it's one of the last great secret places on this planet.

Bottom line: a producer can make or break a record.
