Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary -- April 1, 2011 -- Home

I am quitting music to pursue a career in Politics.

April Fools.

Everything else in this blog should be somewhat accurate.

Thanks for the great Sold Out closing show in Colorado Springs. Such an awesome way to wind up the whole Safe Upon the Shore Tour.

Currently, resting at home and not doing a whole bunch of anything. As some of you know, I re-injured an old chink in the armour early in the last tour.

The result is I have get a wee bit of maintenance on the old back and rest and rehab for a number of weeks. The biggest reason I mention all this here is that a few shows and events will be affected. And I’d feel terrible if any of you folks made plans assuming I’d be somewhere, when in fact I knew I would not. That would be uncool of me, so here’s a list of proposed and in some cases advertised public appearances that I, with apologies, cannot attend.

I am supposed to play tonight at a Fundraiser in St John’s for The Children’s Center but I cannot make the call. Likewise the Company Theatre Fundraiser in Toronto in early May will have to excuse me.

My biggest regret is that I’ll have to bow out of the proposed shows in May in LA with Russell and a host of others. I was looking forward to that time especially as we’d get to share some tunes from the Crowe Doyle Songbook in some cool and intimate environments.

The sum total of it all is that I have to lay low, professionally speaking, for the entirety of April and May. The maintenance I spoke of is quite simple, as far as back stuff goes, and there is every indication that I should be better than ever by the month of June.

As the old Skipper in Petty Harbour always said, when asked about his health or the weather or any general stat of affairs,

‘Could be Worser’.

Thanks for your patience and understanding in all of this. I look forward to the GBS dates coming up in the Summer months. More than ever.

Cheers,
Alan

Your health is more important than anything else Alan! Rest up and get well! Wishing you a speedy recovery. Yeah it might suck that you can't make those gigs, but I'm sure those who will be attending will understand. Take care of yourself!

About the politics, we could use a better option...

Take care of yourself; make sure you're better before you start acting like you're better so you can come back all the better.

Take care of yourself, good sir, and your GBS show regulars will be eagerly awaiting your return to leading our vertical movement!

Hmmm ... Doctor's orders to stay put for two months? At home? Could be much worser! Enjoy the mandatory family time as much as they will enjoy having you around. Just try not to watch too much politics on TV or else you might just get carried away and decide to run for something anyway! Great time to watch winter fade, spring roll in ... could very well inspire some songs, no? Maybe put the finishing touches on that solo cd cover? Take your time to mend. We'll all be happy to catch you down the road when you're feeling better. Cheers!

I know this isn't what you want, not the way you wanted it to work out. I am so sorry for what you have to give up. Yes, it could be worser, but it's still nowhere near as great as you deserve for it to be.

But this will pass, and you will turn the time into something good and creative and satisfying, because that's who you are and what you do. That doesn't mean you didn't have to give up something you wanted, it doesn't mean that this doesn't in-the-bad-way suck...it just means that I hope for the very best that it can be for you over the next two months, Alan. Get well, be well, heal.  Your stages will always be there, waiting for you, and so will all who love you.

Uncool is something you could never be, Alan.  Really.  I didn't know your back was hurting you during the tour.  I found out later.  So when you gave me one of the greatest nights of my life (dedicating a song to me and my just-passed on friend), you were hurting.  How even kinder and sweeter than I already thought you were.  I've had some experience with back pain, and I usually didn't care about anything or anybody else during it.  But you did.  Thanks again.  I bet Something VERY Beautiful is coming for you. Karma works like that.  So if you have to miss these shows with Russell (and I know that's a wrench), something else will happen along down the road that you'll LOVE.  And the world will sing...

Awe Alan I am so sorry to hear about your back issue. I had no clue that you were in pain I just figured that when The Rock met the Hammer you were just tired. It sure was a great show though I had a ball specially since it was my first ever show. You guys rock and thanks to all of you for such a great evening. I can't wait to do it again. Back pain is not good to deal with not at all. I have issues with mine too and it is hard for me to think about others when it hurts. You really are a great person to be thinking about all us fans. Get well soon and take it easy. Your fans are with you 100% good sir.

First as everyone has stated, your health is the  #1 priority. The fact that you're jumping around the stage today as much as when I first saw you in 1998 is pretty amazing. That said, we had already booked a trip to Cali and L.A. hoping we'd get to see you. We likely will still go to see RC, and I'm guessing we'll have quite a few things to do and see on the west coast. Also want to let you know how much I enjoyed Hey Rosetta in NYC this week, and admit that l pestered Louis there about getting GBS to return to South Orange, NJ. Rest up and hope to see you in Lowell in August.

Alan it sure sucks having a bad back. Sounds like a few us us had some of those issues at times as well.
Sounds like you've been hurting for a while so I guess we can't use the "how long have you had a weak back, oh about a week back" joke. Rest up and get well my friend. Looking forward to seeing you and the boys this summer!

Sorry to hear that you'll be off the road for a while. Heal up sooner than later.

I was delighted to be in the audience at Stargazer's for the last show of the tour.  It was a Perfect Storm, a great band with great music with a great audience at a great venue...

Maybe if you came to california we could fix you right up and you'd be able to relaxe and enjoy the weather, until May. I understand your injury, and believe me, your health is by far more of a concern then a show, but i will be standing in LA missing you.
         get better soon!

Sad to hear you are not well, but happy to know that you're taking time to rest and get better. Imagine what you might write during this hiatus. No one is invincible and I have learned that when the body is tired, it certainly makes sure that we shut down and let it rest. It stops us in our tracks. We have no choice but to listen.
I think its incredibly kind of you to let your fans know what is going on for the future gigs. It truly speaks volume about the respect you have for us fans.
Take it easy! All my wishes for a speedy recovery!

Consider this your virtual get well hug!

On the positive side:
1. You get to spend time at home with your family.
2. You have a built-in excuse for avoiding any kind of physical labour.
3. Unlike some injuries, this will heal.

For your sake, I hope you feel better and are able to move around as you please soon. A not-very-well-known treatment option, spinal decompression, did wonders for me - evidence: you see me jumping at your shows!  Whatever your treatment choice, enjoy your time off. Mental un-winding is often as useful as anything. Take care, Maurette

Sorry to hear about your back Alan.
How is the armour now?
While you're doing your "maintenance", maybe for entertainment purposes you would like to check out this site I came across;

www.quantumjumping.com

If you can actually believe this then there is supposed to be
an alternate version of you living out your life in an alternate universe. Sounds like a science fiction movie!
Really?  If that's the case then don't feel bad. Maybe you're
alternate you "will" be at your LA show in another universe.
Sounds kind of weird eh?
Who knows.
Maybe that's why I'm tired all the time!
Take care.

Hope it's a good rehab and a restful/creative time at home.  Beware the pain killers and the muscle relaxants (don't mix well with that wee glass or foamy pint).  Be sure you've got a good comprehensive back or spine group to work with you.  Your goal should be "better than any other early-middle aged rockstar" in terms of function, not ending up with surgery unless you absolutely have to.
We do all learn to live with a little pain as we gently (or not so gently) slide into and through the 40s.   But sounds like you truly need a reboot, so to speak.
Work hard at the physical therapy, do your exercises, write a song about it.  I know you'll see the humor in this if it is there to be found.  Be well, and we will all raise a glass to you when next we cross paths on the road.
