Tour Diary -- March, 22, 2011 -- Tucson, AZ -- Rialto Theatre

Thank you California. Like wise to Kelowna, Seattle, and Bend.

Grand few shows so far on this run. I feel like I am just recently beginning to understand the population and economy of California. In my mind, California is a country. There may be more gigs to play in California than all of Canada. Not that I would ever prefer LaLa Land over the True North Strong and Free. Quite the opposite, but strictly speaking from a touring musician’s perspective, California is ideal. The weather is rarely impassable, the drives are short between cities and despite the glum economic statements, Californians have lots of money to spend on entertainment. And they love to sing and dance.

A little look at the Internet tells me that Los Angeles County has just under Ten Million people. I think that’s more than live in the Eastern half of Canada. I’m pretty sure that a healthy adult could ride a mountain bike around Los Angeles County. If I left my house in St. John’s and started travelling West, I wonder where I would pass my Ten Millionth person? I guess it would be somewhere in Western Ontario or even Manitoba. Amazing.

Had two days off in Vegas. ‘Nuff said.

Currently in Tucson awaiting a gig at the really cool, Rialto Theatre. I really like this town. One of my favourites in this part of the US. It still has that South Western charm that I saw in the movies when I was a kidd. Congress, the main street is long and narrow and is very much a modern commercial automobile route. But it still looks like some dusty dude on a horse could ride up any second and tie the beast on to a watering station, before he busts through two Saloon doors and shouts ‘Whiskey’ over the shoulders of a few hop alongs bent over the bar. You can feel the past in the streets and store fronts here, and I dig this place because of it.

Four more gigs to home. And I can’t wait. I don’t ever remember finishing a tour without some kind of second thoughts about having the road life give way to the domestic home life. But I, hope you don’t mind if I confess, I am ready ready ready to go home. I think this week, we’ll pass the 150 shows mark on the Safe upon the Shore Tour, if we have not already. I have enjoyed the whole run, but am longing for some home time now. Might even do something crazy like stay home for a full month. Jaysus.

GBS up for a Juno this weekend. We’ve lost a dozen or more of them in the past, but this one is ours for sure. We are up for Group of the Year. Let me check who are competition is…Jaysus. Arcade Fire just won a Grammy amongst other global conquests and were voted by one industry mag as the best band on earth. They are one of, if not the biggest concert draws in the free world. Hmm. Broken Social Scene are no slouches either. Maybe we’ll spilt the vote! Yeah that’s it. We’ll sneak right up the middle for the win. Then we can finally take ‘Juno Nominee’ off our posters.

Or not.

Four more shows. Thanks everyone for coming out.

Stay tuned here and on my Twitter Feed for information about some shows in May with Russell in Los Angeles. Should be fun.

Cheers,
Alan

I can't speak much to California OR Tucson, never having been there, but I'll take your word for it, Alan.  I've spent my entire life in the Pacific Northwest.  But I promise whenever you set foot up here, I'll be there to cheer you on.  And I WAS there at the Seattle show.

Speaking of which--THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for singing "Something Beautiful".  It was very sweet and it made me cry.  I have been seriously ill or I would have tendered my thank-you earlier.  And I'm sure that fan who wasn't there with us smiled down from Heaven at you.  Thank you, all of you.

Somewhat spastic as it looked, I hope you guys enjoyed the cake.  It came from the heart.  And do enjoy your time off.  If anyone deserves it, you do.

Being a Californian, please let me tell you that while we do spend money on entertainment, most of us are quite picky about WHO we spend it on.  Having traveled to Seattle and then home again for the Petaluma show, trust me when I say that GBS is definitely on the short list of groups worth the money.  The shows were GREAT and it was wonderful seeing the band again.

Enjoy your time at home, I am sure you more than deserve it after the busy year or is that YEARS :) that you have had.  Best of luck with your shows in LA with Russell.

And of course, thank you for doing what you do so that the rest of us can enjoy the music.

Well, if anyone deserves a break after doing that many shows, it would be you sir :) GBS are the hardest working lads in the music industry, and you all deserve any success that comes to you, including that much deserved Juno. But even if you don't win that, you guys are still number one with us! And I'm sure my fellow fans would agree with me whole heartedly.

I also want to say thank you for "Something Beautiful" as well. Losing that friend that couldn't be there came as such a shock back in late January, and there are times that it still feels like some horrible nightmare. I'm sure Jen was smiling down on you all that night :)

Terribly terribly excited about the George Street show! The last time you guys played the fest, I was just a tad bit too young to attend. This time around though, I will be there. Should be a blast!

Cheers til then, and hope you have a relaxing time at home with those you hold dearest to you!

Meaning no disrespect to Tucson whatsoever - I really like this town too - I'll agree that the thought of being in St. John's is very appealing right now.

You've worked very hard and you've done very well; just take care of yourself for four more shows, and I guess the Junos too, and then you will have your chance to rest and recuperate. May those shows be good and easy ones for you. And when it's time to go back out, I hope the shows with Russell are a wild and crazy blast for both of you.

I'd wish you luck at the Junos, but, well, you know how it is better than any of the rest of us. With the year Arcade Fire's having, I'd be better off wishing you a miracle at the Junos. But miracles do happen, Alan, every now and again, so I will wish you just that. You certainly deserve one.

Don't let the good folk of Redding hear you including them in that "LaLa Land" group.  For that matter, the Petalumans, Arroyo Grandites and Long Beachers would not be too thrilled about it either. When you and Russell come back in May for your shows, that is when you will find yourselves in the true and beating Heart Of LaLa Land.

You were right about that music store - they've got an abundance of tubas and the tech guy there is a tuba guru.

Not that my musical opinion has ever seemed to stack up with what the rest of the world thinks is popular, but I've never heard of Broken Social Scene and I only know Arcade Fire by name. However, I've seen GBS a number of times and I own all your albums. You are tops on my chart!

Tucson is a lovely town indeed, but sometimes you do just crave your own bed. I tour with a marching band (and will be in Toronto at the beginning of July) and I know how amazing the thrill of performing is and how awesome it is when thousands of people are screaming for you. But I also know that by the end of it I'm exhausted and ready for a weekend of sitting at home in my pajamas.  You perform your butt off for us and you deserve a break. Enjoy every minute of it!

Be well,
Amy

Hope you guys haven't run into any snow!  One of my co-workers just came back from Cali and Arazona and she said they ran into a big snow strom while down there.

Ha ha, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, eh?

Wishing you and the guys all the luck this year at the Junos!!  This is YOUR year!! :D

Cheers!

Oh *sigh*.

Here I am in Flagstaff AZ, five hours away, missing the show because of work at 6am the next morning! But I will see you in Durango! I miss the hometown shows though. I wonder what the crowds are like down here in the States as I've never been to an American show. Regardless, I am excited!!! safe trip from the desert to the mountains!

you have your fans' cheers.  Arcade Fire is very mainstream, not the same league as Great Big Sea at all.  GBS is much much better, but the best don't necessarily get mainstream recognition, do they?

I'm a native Californian, love to sing and dance, you can call us whatever you want, its all good.

Thank you so much for the shows & tour, hope to see you again after a bit of a rest.  Maybe in May.

Ahhhhhh!  Thanks again!  Darwin treasures his pick and I am excited to see Lynda's picture she snapped of the moment!  When he asked if he could dress up as a pirate for the concert, I knew it would make folks smile!  He strummed away with your pick on his sword and sang until he fell asleep on his dad's lap!  So sweet!  Your story about your son the next night sounded just like my latest ticket!  Darwin asked the officer why she wasn't wearing her hat!  Too funny, he is all about the costumes and performance!  Anyhow, glad you love Colorado, me too!  Thanks again for the great music and the great laughs!  You're a talented crew. Peace.

And the Juno goes to . . . GREAT BIG SEA!!!

Okay, I know that didn't happen.  But, if it were up to those of us on this site, it would've.  That's the thing with being a unique, niche band.  Even if a band like that becomes fairly well-known, they'll never be top of the charts.  But, the fans that the band does have will be very devoted and appreciative because of how different and artistic the music is.  Personally, if I were a musician, I would feel way more honoured to receive the genuine appreciation of a medium number of niche fans than be super popular but put out the same type of music everyone else does.  But, maybe that's just me.
