Tour Diary - August 2, 2010 - AC Flight 122 - YYZ-YYT

Just typed August 2nd in the above line.  Not to get all nostalgic, but if memory serves me correctly, this is the eve of the launch of the first GBS CD.   I recall getting my first look at the manufactured product on this day 17 years ago.  I was standing on the sidewalk in front of the college frat-ish house I’d been living in for almost 7 years.  I don’t recall if it was Bob or Darrell who dropped me the CD, as I was just too nervous and excited to see the finished product in my hand.

I remember standing there, long after the messenger had left.  I remember seeing my reflection in the plastic wrap that covered the blue watery print that was our CD art.  I remember not going into the house right away because I did not want my roommates to see me getting misty about the moment.  I called a few people; my girl friend, my brother, my Dad.  I told them all the same thing.

It’s here.  I got my CD.

Yeah, if memory serves me right, that day was 17 years ago today.  Right now I’m typing on my state of the art computer while sitting in Seat 1D in Executive Class on Air Canada returning from tour number god only knows, in support of CD #10.  What a ride.

Had a great week on the road.  Had some great fun in the park in Roseburg and in the Zoos in Portland and Seattle.  Had fun on a promo day in Vancouver and Sean’s solo gigs have proven to be an awesome way to spend a day off.  Played one of our best shows in a while in Kamloops, and rolled to beautiful Grande Cache for a dance in the park.

Spent most of the day in Grande Cache sitting on the bus behind the stage, but did manage to chase Sean around the running trails for a half hour or so.

I’m sure our Folk Singer on the Road slow jog was nothing compared to the uber marathon taken on by the competitors of Death Race only 24 hours before the above photo was taken.  Some dude did the 100+ Kilometer race up and down four mountains in 11 hours.  Jaysus.  Am I as lazy as that statistic makes me feel?

In any case, I’ve got a date back on the Rock with the family and a few days singing some tunes with some Irish friends in a Brother act called Size2Shoes.  They are in St. John’s for the Folk Festival and hope to show them a good time.  Also hope we can forward their new CD project and land me a gig in the producer chair for a tune or two.

This plane is slated to land at 7pm NL time.  I have not checked a bag so I hope I can dash home in time to catch the Prince before he hits the sheets.  Then, I hope to get a good night’s sleep myself, as I have not slept in a stationary bed since last Sunday night.  I’ll need all my energy this week.  The Irish are coming.

Really looking forward to the gigs in Wisconsin and the Irish Fest in St. Paul as well.

August 2nd.  Big day.  Make the most of it.  You’ll probably only get 80 or 90 of them.

Rock On.

Cheers,

Alan

I recognise the boy in that reflection. I still see him all the time, am glad each and every time he shows his sweet face. I really like that boy.

An unexpected need to return to St. John's quickly had left me consoling myself with "At least I get to see the Folk Festival now." Suddenly, that's become a very sweet consolation.

Alan, one of the many things I love about GBS is the fact that you guys can still summon up that wide-eyed wonder from time to time, and really do seem to love the ride you're on.  Well done.

As my kids try to put together their little karaoke video for the contest, they're learning just how hard it is to get everything right when you're recording a song - and that's when someone has done most of the work for you already.  Gives us all some new appreciation for your gift.  You've used it well - thanks for sharing it with us over the years.

I love indulging in a good nostalgic moment from time to time. August 2 is a good nostalgia day for me too, since it's our wedding anniversary/my husband's birthday (we got married on his 21st!).

And I wouldn't stress about the running dude. He's crazy. You've got a few years on me and I'm quite positive you'd run me into the ground, so keep that as a consolation!

Grande Cache enjoyed you Great Big Sea. Thanks for coming to our fair little mountain town and entertaining for "Our Party". You gave us a little piece of home. I loved the show, but went home feeling soooo homesick. 16 years away and the "want to go home" never leaves us. Can't wait until I'm sitting in St. Phillips once again and breathing the salty air.

you should write professionally for travel magazines! Your FTR entries are always filled with wonderful images about people and places. Bob's too for that matter.

Wow--has it really only been 17 years?  Actually I've only been on the ride with you since 1998, but it still only seems like a few years have gone by.  May many more be still to come!

I got to see you at the zoo shows in Portland and Seattle and they were wonderful, to say the very least.  Thank you for that.  By the way, Alan, if you were wondering who called to you from the carousel in Seattle, that was me.  My little girls, whose first show it was, were on the carousel and said, "There's Alan, Mommy!"  We all called out, "Hi, Alan!"  I'm not entirely sure you knew where it was coming from, as you just vaguely waved and said, "Hi...?"  But the girls loved it.  They were sure you said hi personally to them.  Thank you for that, too.  Olivia, my daughter, kept trying to climb up onto the stage later to hug you, even though I told her she couldn't do that.

By the way, are you guys going on Ships & Dips this year?  Sean's tweet seemed to indicate that you are, but Sixthman hasn't officially announced it, and my ever-cautious husband doesn't want to book a cabin unless he knows for sure.  Can you give us that word?

Hey Alan,
Thank you for the best birthday week I have had in a long time (my birthday is on the 2nd)! The "no pants" show was lots of fun and cartwheel-tastic, Portland had my favorite set-list of any show I've seen, and Seattle was awesome because I got to share it with so many wonderful people. But getting to chat with you at the Railway made my whole week! Thanks again for the hugs and the picture, and use that hug token wisely!
Much Love,
Jamie

What a fantastic weekend of great shows, worth every moment of those long drives.

I still clearly remember the first time I heard "Run Runaway" on the local radio station, hard to believe it's been 17 years. Thanks so much for all you do!

I think my previous comment wasn't clear, I know it's been 17 years since your first album and 15 for "Up".

I can only imagine how happy and excited you would've felt on that day 17 years ago.  But it sounds similar to the way I would feel if I ever "make it" in the arts.

Just looked at the picture of you, Darrell, Bob, and Sean on the liner notes to that first CD.  You all look so young and hopeful and excited--especially you and Bob.  Like releasing this CD is the coolest thing ever (which I'm sure it was), like you see this as the beginning of an awesome life of being folk-rock stars (which it turned out to be), and like you can't believe that this is all actually happening.  Adorable, I gotta say.  But I'm sure most people would feel the same in the same situation.

PS: In the pic in this post, you look like you're about to sneeze.  Just sayin'.

The Seattle show was a blast! "General Taylor" got the whole family misted up, as we'd just buried our 16 year old cat "Stormy" a week earlier. The night could not have been lovelier, and I don't know if it was me or my kids who were more thrilled to meet you afterward! Enjoy the time with your kiddo...they grow so fast! My first GBS show my daughter was 10 months old...she's now approaching 9 years, and has grown up listening to GBS!

Alan I love reading your FTR'S you always paint quite the picture as if I were there, as I know I wish I was. Great Big Sea has been my fav band for years and you are the greatest inspiration I have for my music as well. I entered a video for the karaoke contest and sure hope I win. My youtube user is argylls27 if you wanted to check it out, as well as other GBS covers.
The new album is incredible and i think it's one of the best. I purchased the cd 2 months in advance and was chompin' at the bit to listen to it. Since the release date it hasn't left my car stereo. Oh! And I was intrigued to hear over the hills, being an infinteer in the CF recently home from a tour in Afghanistan it really hit home. On my time off over there I would usually borrow my mates guitar and play every GBS song I know! The lads were sick of hearing me sing straight to hell, that's for sure. So I am  now living in the small town of Morinville Alberta just out side of Edmonton and I am looking so forward to seeing you guys in October! Already have tickets, Months ago. I have been to over 12 of your shows and they get more exciting every time. Can't wait Allan! See you boys in October!

My husband and I are looking forward to your show in Bayfield, Wisconsin, too.  August 12th is our wedding anniversary, and we both agreed that seeing GBS was definitely the best way to spend it, even if it meant driving 11 hours!  (After all, driving to St. John's from southern Michigan took much longer)

Here's to 10 fabulous albums, and many more!

Thank you again for the incredible Seattle show- you brought the sunshine and added so much joy. It was an awesome night.

Tickets in hand for Vancouver in November -any Seattleites care to join me for the train ride north?!

Congratulations on 17 years and 10 albums. I'm lovin' "Safe..."  more with each listen. You've all grown so much as songwriters and musicians, yet have never left behind your courage & patience & grit or the roots of the music that has been your inspiration.

Bravo!

Congratulations on 17 yrs as well.  I have loved you guys since the early 90's when you played at Winnipeg Folk Festival.  You were the young guys then because I always liked Rawlings Cross better, I think 17 yrs later you can give them a run for their money.  We are very much looking forward to seeing you next weekend in St. Paul.  I will be the one with the 5 yr old who knows all of your songs...really she does.   Consider bringing the kids on your little tour, there is a great Childrens museum in St. Paul and the festival is fun for kids too.  Also, Ruta Mit for good Thai, Cosetta's (Italian) and if you want a throw back to the 70's right down from downtown St. Paul is Mancini's. (steaks)    Looking forward to seeing you BOTH NIGHTS!!  Thanks for having a venue so could bring my kid.  Thanks for all your great music.   Michelle and Tara
