Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - June 7, 2010 - St. John’s, NL - Home

Just back from a fun three day trip to Grand Cayman. The Ships and Dips boat stopped there on one of the Cruises, but I was far too done in from the night before to even consider leaving the room for a day trip. Now, I wish I had got my arse out of bed and onto the shore. It could very well be the best Island destination in the Caribbean.

My travels have led me to think that any place where Tourism is the largest industry is bound to be not that interesting to me. This is especially true of warmer destinations that get so much commerce in accommodating beach dwellers and sun seekers, that all the cool local activity that comes with a fishery or a cotton field or a sugar cane, or mining area, gets left behind and lost. I am much more interested in visiting places and witnessing people doing exactly what they would be doing even if I was not there to watch. You know, places where people cultivate or make things for a living, rather than exclusively play host to the masses.

I have found too many of the warmer destinations in the Caribbean and Pacific Coasts fall into the group of places that have, by choice or necessity, lost some or all of the local customs, occupations, language, and music in favour of the Tourist Trade. (Holy shite. Do I sound like a Rock Star travel snob, sticking his nose up at a beach vacation? What a dickhead. Sorry.)

I am very happy to report that Grand Cayman seems to be a great beach destination where you can witness people living in their own environment and not just waiting on the shore for the next ship-load of suckers looking for plastic maracas made in Indonesia. (Holy Shite, do I sound as jaded as I think? What the f*&# is wrong with me?) I met lots of fishermen and many folks who work in the Banking Industry along with a whole bunch of home-builders, a few medical students and teachers. Very interesting group of people. The beaches are beautiful and they claim to have the cleanest coastline in all the Caribbean.

Grand spot.

Now I temper my delight by confessing that I was there on an all expense paid working trip and was housed and pampered at the Ritz Carlton. In case you are wondering, I cannot afford the Ritz Carlton. It is really beyond even the most successful folksinger's budget. And the kind folks from the company who shall remain unnamed here (as I have not asked their permission) treated us like gold as they employed us to play for the opening of their Conference.

All that full disclosure stuff aside, I recommend Grand Cayman. Not that it’s the most exotic place in the world, but for the fact that the walks on the beach, the swimming, the snorkeling or diving, kayaking and all the active holidaying are available and quite enjoyable. Likewise the food is varied and very good and the chats in the pubs are grand.

Being resourceful, as we tend to be, GBS decided to take advantage of the days in the sun to film a new video for the new CD. Nothing but a Song will be the first single off the new GBS recording and the video should feature us frolicking in the sun around Grand Cayman. Some performances and some other stuff should make it in there, all things being well.

A couple of pics to give you the idea…

My favourite part of the whole experience was swimming with the stingrays. I realize it appears to be the very Tourist Trap kind of thing I snubbed above, but this was really cool. They are amazing creatures that seem prehistoric. Very cool.

Alan

The band performance part of the video was shot at a pub on the beach and I am very grateful to the owners and Staff for looking after us so well.  I am especially grateful to all hands who volunteered to participate in the fun. T’was grand.

Keep your eyes open for the video release.  Should be in a few weeks.

Next up in GBS land is a gig in Nanaimo in a few weeks. If it looks funny on the schedule for there to be a one-off gig on Vancouver Island, don’t worry.  We have not lost our Canada Maps. As with Grand Cayman, we have a corporate event to play elsewhere on the Island and we just thought it a perfect time to play the cool little theatre in Nanaimo. It should be a great night to try some new songs off the new CD.

Flew home on Thursday of last week and did something I have not done I over a year. I unpacked my suitcase and put it away. I usually just hide it, still packed, in the closet as my wife, child, and dog are all bothered by its presence. But this time, I really could unpack it and put it away as I am to be home for almost a month straight.

I might even get to mow the grass. Living the dream.

Cheers,
Alan

Frankly, I agree with you. I see it, too as  travel agent. So many places that were once thriving with their own natural resources and jobs are now pandering to the ship loads of folks who think that they are seeing the real island life. When in reality it couldnt be further from the truth. What theyre seeing is what we want them to be not what they have been. So if youre being jaded I guess I am as well. It comes with observing life I think.

OTOH Grand Cayman is a beautiful spot! Ive planned several wedding there, did you go see the turtles? Clients always rave about that.

BTW, There are still amazingly authentic places on this earth though! Dont give up the search :)

No, you don't sound like a travel snob or a dickhead; you sound like a well-seasoned traveller. The more anyone travels, the clearer their vision becomes about what they like the most and the least on the journey. Unless they're completely stunned, that is.

Still, I'm a bit wary of any final conclusion reached about a destination that relies too heavily on the vantage point one gets from the Ritz Carlton, all while being treated like gold by corporate patrons. The view from such a lofty perch certainly shows much that others may never see, but it also runs the risk of missing a great deal that's best seen from a nearer-to-earth perspective. Maybe at some time in the future you'll be able to visit Grand Cayman on your own while on a no-disclosures-required jaunt, and then you can see what a somehat-less-mediated view of the island reveals.

Nothing But A Song is a very good choice for a first-single release from the new GBS album - a strong and sure beginning with a powerful and honest song.  Yes, GBS is nothing if not resourceful...pragmatic as well. Frolic ye in the tropical sun while ye may.

Enjoy your time at home, perhaps even with a bit of Northern-Climes sun every now and then. Have a great adventure discovering the grand spots closer to home on your Distance Education trek. And then it will be time for Nanaimo. I'm really looking forward to Nanaimo.

And please, please get some rest - your body will thank you. And so will I.

Let me start off by welcoming you back! Hope you had a grand time in the Grand Caymans (sorry for the bad pun)!

I concur with Lynda. You are neither a dickhead or travel snob. You're one of the luckiest bastards there is who gets to do his dream job for a living, and not many get that opportunity in their lifetimes.

Glad you had time to both work and play in the Caymans. From the pictures I have seen from Caymana Productions, it looks like you guys had a blast! I look forward to seeing the video in a couple of weeks time!

Glad that you are getting some much deserved rest at home. If anyone deserves it, its you. You been all over the world as of late, it seems, so staying home for a month must seem like a luxury.

By the way, I finally got to see Robin Hood this weekend~both on Friday and Saturday. I'm not a big movie-goer, maybe see two or three movies a year, but knew I had to see RH. I was not at all disappointed. You did fabulously for your first time. Congratulations! This movie is the first that I can remember that has held my attention for as long as it did. I did not leave my seat for the whole movie...both nights.

Enjoy the time home, and hopefully the sun will come out to play. Its about time it did, anyways.

Cheers!

Hi Alan,
Sounds great! We are thrilled to hear you are coming to the island again! We have the Vancouver Island Music Business Conference happening up in Comox June 23-28th. (VIMBC.com) It is not very big we only have about 150-200 participants and half of them are the panelists so it is kinda like an indusrty party! We have Bill Henderson, Ralph Murphy, Kevin Churko, Patricia Conroy, Ron Proulx and so many other interesting and exciting industry folks hanging out for the week, and a ton of awesome showcase acts from all over. We would so love to see you if you have a chance to stop by...
Thanks for thinking about it.
Sincerely
Susie

Agreed on Grand Cayman! For those who have never been it rests upon a volcano tip and offers amazing snorkeling, although once you go a couple football fields out you are aleady in the 1000's of feet! I (along with everyone I am sure) cannot wait to see the video! Glad you had fun and can't wait for the album!
    Sincerely,

Ah, it is so good to see the rest of what you had to say, especially those beautiful photos. You make a gorgeous biker and jet-skier, and rays are indeed very cool. Did you ever go to the Sydney Aquarium? There's a walk-through tunnel where you can stand beneath the rays as they glide effortlessly above your head, silent and mysterious and absolutely fascinating, even if maybe a bit less so than actually going in the water with them must be. Next cruise, I am getting my own arse up and off the boat if there is a day in Grand Cayman.

Enjoy this sweet stretch of life as a suitcase that has finally been closed, for the time being. Mow your grass, walk your dog, play with your boy, sleep in your own bed...be happy, Alan. And get some rest.

Alan, I think that suitcases should be unpacked at least once a year!  You poor thing (not)!  Oh the things one complains about from different perspectives.  I will complain about NOT packing for a year.  Boo hoo.  I know what it's like to have a traveling hubby, so tell your wife I feel for her.  Good luck with the upcoming releases.  I can't wait.

Glad to hear that you are able to take a breather and take some time to enjoy being with your family.  We truly appreciate the time you devote to your career.  We love the music of GBS (especially when it's live!...as I selfishly sit here with fingers crossed for another possible Southern Ontario date, as we are traveling when you are in TO and the 11 hour plan ride is a little too long to run back for the show :o), this enjoyable blog that provides a glimpse into the life of a folk/rock star, and now addition of your wonderful new adventure in acting; I would imagine that a breather is more important than ever.

Thanks again to Sean, Bob, Chris, Murray and especially yourself, as well as all the GBS crew for entertaining us, whether by ear or sight!   Cheers to you all.

Wow. Grand Cayman. Stingray City. Rum Point with legendary mudslides. It is indeed a great place ... particularly if you visit during Pirate Week where each regional village hosts an open-air dance. But I'd just popped in to say thay Robin Hood was great and I wish you and the band a tremendous second half of the year. Your fans are almost as remarkable as the band ... amazing people.

Thanks for sharing those pics with us all.  I dig the third photo with the suit shirt - hilarious! I need to find one of those and try wearing it to my job and see if I can fool the owners! LOL.

Anyway, enjoy your time at home. We'll see ya on the road.

Alan,

I'm from Grand Cayman and have been a fan of GBS since around 1998 when I was on a ski trip in Canada and saw your Lukey video. It didn't hurt that I was dating an Irish girl at the time, who I was trying to impress with your music!!! She loved it!

So, I have a confession to make: I kinda snuck into to the concert at the Ritz last week! Shhhhh! My band had a gig of our own at the Turtle Farm that night and when I stopped at the Governor's Square mall ATM I heard the distinct sounds of GBS. I parked at the hotel and kept following the music until, next thing I know, I was front and center for your last six songs and encore! Even caught one of Bob's guitar picks (which reminds me, I need to take it out of my jeans pocket before It gets chewed up in the wash!).

I'm so glad you enjoyed my beautiful island. I, in fact, had contacted you guys (maybe your agent) sometime around 2003 in hopes of putting together a St. Patrick's day concert in the parking lot of one of our Irish pubs - twas too lofty an endeavor for a young architect/musician at the time. Maybe next year though!

Take care and thank you for your music!

Best,

Nick

Travelling as much as you do, I'm surprised you're not more jaded.  However you miss all of the shots you don't take, so keep looking.  I spent my honeymoon in an all inclusive resort in a very touristy Mexican city, ick.  But we went on a day hike, and found a small farm in the hills, had lunch with the proprietor, cooked in an outdoor stone oven, then went on to some waterfalls our lovely host led us to.  You just never know what's around the next corner!

Also, you should call Susie McGregor (see comments above).  She is the organizer of the VIMBC, and we would love to see you there!

Taking every shot with eyes wide open,

Love the multi-tasking in the tropics! Getting a video out of the deal put that chi-chi hotel room to very good use. No need for any guilt. We can't wait to see what it looks like ... but even moreso to hear the new tunes! Enjoy your time off with everyone at home. Rest up. We're gathering a nice bunch to hear you play in Vermont this summer. Bring the family this time - it promises to be a great picnic. Cheers!

Do you know if you'll be coming to Massachusetts anytime this year? I'd love to see you guys perform live, and maybe introduce myself. I know my cousin Joanne and Aunt Gerry have seen you play in Boston before, but I never was able to make it.
Enjoy your time at home with your family!

Hi Alan,

You certainly don't sound like a snob or a dickhead.  The farthest south I've travelled is Florida, so I can't comment about the Caribbean specifically, but I'm definitely not too crazy for touristy cities either . . . or for tourists, for that matter.  While it is neat to *see* particular tourist attractions (Parliament Hill, the CN Tower, Signal Hill, whatever) in various cities, what interests me more is the experience of what that particular city or place is like.  How does it breathe?  How does it move?  What's it's rhythm?  That kind of thing.

Great pics.  Looking forward to the video!

And I'm glad you finally got to unpack your suitcase.  Although I would've expected that a rich guy like you would be able to pay someone to mow the lawn . . .

Yes, you really are living the dream!(grass mowing included) Those were great pics! I can understand about the suitcase, it must be hard on your family when you're away so much. I guess while you're home they don't want the reminder that you'll have to leave again soon. They say that "Home is where the Heart is". At least when you're away you know that you have a family that loves you waiting at home for you.
