Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - April 22, 2010 - Air Canada Flight 797 - Montreal-LA

Still licking my wounds following a late night/early morning Juno’s after party thrown by the kind folks at Warner Music Canada.  Held at Bianca’s, normally a fine restaurant on Water Street in St. John’s. But for this event, the white tablecloths and good cutlery were put aside to make way for guitars, drums and speakers.

After a few polite hellos and sips, I appointed myself emcee for the evening and started a parade of jams that went well into the daylight.  Highlights included, some Andrews Sister-esque singing by the Good Lovelys, Lenny Gallant and Ron Hynes proving to all hands that Atlantic Canada has the best songwriters, and the return of Brothers in Stereo.

Sean managed to coerce the Billy Talent boys to come up for a jam of a few tunes including a Police number in which I pretended to know the chords and Ian from BT ripped a solo like he wrote the shagging song.  All the while, Magoo and BT’s Ben held the battle of the male sopranos.  The BT boys rocked and later confessed that in their 15+ years history, they had never really jumped up and jammed with other bands.

My personal thrill was getting to sit in for Greg Keelor with a makeshift Blue Rodeo.  Jim Cuddy, Basil Donavan, Glen Miltchem from the real band made up the core of the experience while myself and Chris Ledrew from Brothers in Stereo tried to look like cool and act as if this moment was not the f*&king coolest of our musical lives.

The daylight was creeping into the restaurant as the last tunes were sung. I jumped a cab home and got to bed around 5:30 am.  The Prince woke up at 6:55.  Ouch.  Pancakes were made.  Very quietly.

Despite the rain, drizzle, fog, volcanic ash, floods, locusts, and other Biblical Plagues cast over St. John’s last weekend, I think the Juno’s were a massive success.  The numbers support my suspicion as this year’s event had the highest ratings in years.

Thank you Juno’s.  Please come again.

The unpronounceable volcano from Iceland has arsed up many schedules and plans around the globe.  Even Hollywood is not immune to Ash Clouds.  The much anticipated press event for the film Robin Hood to be held in the Mother Country in London, Nottingham and a few other places has been relocated outside the no fly zones of the UK.

As I type, I am bound for Los Angeles where I’m to meet up with the rest of the cast and prep for a press blitz over the weekend.  Really looking forward to seeing some of the cast and crew again.  They were such a big part of my 2009 and I have not seen many of them since I walked off the set and on to a plane last August.  Not sure what lies ahead as I have never before done a Hollywood Blockbuster press junket.  I do know that the publicity machine is in full swing and more clips and photos have been released to the public.

Here’s a cool poster I found on the film’s website, www.robinhoodthemovie.com:

Robin Hood

Friggin’ cool.

Here’s an individual shot of Allan A’Dayle.

Allan

Exciting times.

Much approaching in GBS land as well.  I join the lads in Nashville on Wednesday and we do a few dates on the East Coast.  Looking forward to the gents on the bus.
And, I’m very happy to announce that the new CD Safe upon the Shore is mastered and in production.  Release date is set for early July.  Keep checking here or on the homepage for the exact date.  Shortly after that you’ll see the full fall touring schedule in support of the new cd.

Also looks like a few of us might get to fulfill a life long tourism craving and get to visit some of the remote communities in our Province.  Me and Sean hope to join some of the Distance Education folks at Memorial University who teach music online to kids and classes in tiny isolated schools in Newfoundland and Labrador.  We hope to visit four communities in the last week of the school year and bring some traditional and not so traditional music workshops to the kids.  Keep you posted on that as well.

I’m flying in to LA for the second time in as many weeks to further this flirtation with Hollywood.  People are gonna talk.

Hope to make the most of these days and nights.

Grand times for this lucky bastard.

Cheers,
Alan

I am so glad you got to have your "f*&king coolest" moment during the Junos and even more glad you are finally off to continue that flirtation with Hollywood. Have a great time there with your castmates doing whatever it is one does on a junket. Keep on giving those people plenty to talk about. You do it all so well.

Oh yes, and solidify those Spanish Steps plans too, please. We went to Chapters last night for tour books and the first page I opened the Fodor's to was a drop-dead gorgeous photo of the Piazza di Spagna. Marvellous...which is what it is going to be.

You may indeed be a lucky bastard, Alan, but you're such a deserving one as well.

Wow! Great photos Alan, they're amazing!! I cannot WAIT for this movie... I'm looking forward to it so much!

As for the Juno party, sounds so amazing, would've been thrill for anyone to play (or just be there).

I hope to see more tour dates (and album announcements) soon, including pre-sale dates for Toronto!!

You rock Alan, enough said!

Wow!  Thanks for the pics!  Allan A'Dayle sure looks a lot different than Alan Doyle!  Older.  But the costume looks awesome: authentic, rugged, tough, and a little dangerous.  Handsome in a dangerous bad-boy way.  I like the giant bow too.  Can't wait for the movie!

Too bad you can't do the publicity stuff in England but at least that disappointment isn't as big of a deal as being stranded in Europe for a week waiting to go home.

I'm glad you had a blast at the Junos.  And I'm glad you got to jam with Blue Rodeo.  That kind of experience just goes to show that, no matter how famous a person gets, he/she is never immune to being starstruck.  But I'm sure you looked very cool!

I hope those pancakes were worth 1.5 hours worth of sleep!

And thanks for giving us a release date for the new CD.

Finally, yes, you are a "lucky bastard."  But, while some luck is just plain-old luck, we do make most of our own luck ourselves.  You've worked hard to get where you are.  You, Bob, and Sean are all very talented and skilled musicians and deserving individuals.  Be proud of your success!

Lucky Bastard INDEED !

But so well deserving.  Sometimes when I hear of all your experiences, I feel like you are living the dreams of a HUNDRED people! But those of us who admire and appreciate you so much would not have it any other way ... with one exception, we would all want to be there enjoying it with you.

You are such a good father to exit the much needed pillow to do pancakes for the Prince.  You will not regret that 20 years from now! I sure don't know where you get your energy from, but good on you.

We are all anxiously awaiting the movie- they started airing the commercials this week in the USA. Nearly fell clear off the couch - looks like a fantastic journey I can not wait to experience.  Sure would be fun if there could be a declared GBS night @the show ...so when your first scene airs on the screen and I jump up & yell "GO ALAN !!!! " I wouldn't look like such an over excited idiot...I would be in GOOD company and probably not the first to pop out of my chair.  CD July - UG, well we can purchase the DVD b4 the CD to provide comfort.

Thanks so much to both you and Sean for the beautiful voices you generate on all your songs.  When things are STRESSED beyond comprehension @ work -I find myself disapearing into your voices and being healed by your humor whit and talents.

God Bless ~ Be safe on your journeys & Cheers

I am so STOKED!!!  Those photos look wonderful!  I cannot wait to see this movie!  I wish I had been able to be at the Junos--they sounded wonderful, but alas, a mother with small children has obligations and cannot indulge herself.  But I just found out about GBS coming to the Oregon Zoo in Portland, Oregon and the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington in July!  Amazing--I thought I was going to have to wait a year or so to see you guys again.  And even better, I get to bring my 7-year-old twins to their first Great Big Sea concert ever at the Woodland Park Zoo!  I am SOOO thrilled, as are they--they've been dancing to your music since before birth; I went to a concert five months pregnant.  I wanted to ask: Is it possible that you could play "Run Runaway" at the Seattle concert on July 29?  It's their absolute favorite song, played over and OVER, and this is their first concert.  PLEASE???

Your pictures tickle me.  I showed my room mate, who was somehow less thrilled.  As if.

Have fun on your junket, because you are a year overdue to get your musical arse slayed at MerleFest!  There's also going to be a lot of "What rock did you guys crawl off of and how come I've never heard of you before?"  It's been a long time since y'all have played for as many Great Big Virgins as you will in Wilkesboro.  But the question is not whether MerleFest is ready for you, it's "Are YOU ready for MerleFest?"

Alan and gents,
Alan I wish you all the best in your big Hollywood debut.

No f_____ way! I would not have recognized you in the posters if I had just stumbled across them! Many congrats!!  Hope all the red carpet affairs go well.  Is this why you don't sing Company of Fools for us anymore?  Now that you are in the movie world you are "knee deep in shite That's polished slick To look just right"? (one of my favorite songs, and I don't hear it anymore)

I agree with Mark C! Just make sure you don't leave us! You and the boys bring us a lot joy and smiles with the GBS music!

Looking forward to seeing you guys in Portland and Seattle (part of my b-day month extravaganza)!

Robin Hood with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett?!  You go!  What a thrill for you -- and when they hear you sing and play, what a thrill for THEM.  Have you journaled about that...when people maybe more widely known than you are hear one of your CDs for the first time or see a 17,000-hit YouTube "Walk on the Moon" video or see a clip from your DVD?  I would just love to capture that astonishment and bottle it -- that aha! epiphany moment.  Enjoy the ride because you richly deserve it.  Imagine your grandparents' and great-grandparents' pride at you and "the lads" having turned your heritage into lucrative careers.  They're tapping their collective feet looking down from above, I'm telling you.
PS  I saw you twice at the Cape Cod Melody Tent.  My brother knows the organizers and they were amazed at your following and talent and skill and energy.  The first year you were there, Linda Ronstadt played the next night and the concert was dead stale the whole night except for one song, according to my music teacher sister who was there. I TOLD her I was going to the superior concert!
