Tour Diary - February 16, 2010 - Home

Do you realize that if you leave Sydney Australia early in the morning of February 14th, and fly all day, you arrive in Vancouver earlier on the very same February 14th?  That’s like getting two Valentine’s Day’s in one year.  I had that very experience only a couple of days ago.  Double the Love.

I’ve been in Aus for a couple of weeks working on a couple of projects with RC.   We were writing for a new project that I hope to tell you all about in months to come, but for now shall remain hushed.  We also recorded a TOFOG entry for a new John Williamson Tribute CD.  For, Australians, John Williamson is like Stomping Tom for Canadians.  Not sure if there is a US comparison.  He writes and sings simple songs primarily about the rural Australian lifestyle and landscape.  Some of them are quite lovely and poignant; others fun and silly.  He is a Folk Hero to many in the land down under, as his forty plus years in the biz have cemented his place in Australian history.

Had a grand time with the TOFOG gents old and new and I’m always grateful for a chance to dance with them.

Jetted all the way back on the 14th.   Flew from

Coff’s Harbour to Sydney    1.5 hours
Sydney to Vancouver        15.5 hours
Sydney to Toronto        5 hours
Toronto to St. John’s        3.5 hours

With stop over’s the whole journey takes about 30 hours.  It’s about the same travel time going East or West, North or South of here.  Interesting.  That’s about as far away as one can travel without ending up closer to home.  Most would argue this to be a long travel day, and they would be correct.

But I find it amazing that we can basically get anywhere civilized on the planet on commercial airlines, in less than a day.  Less than a Century ago, Australia was a world away, and literally a prison sentence for petty criminals from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.   Once a prison ship dumped you in Van Diemen’s Land, you would most likely never find a way to get back.  In more recent years, flying to Australia was a multi day venture.  Now the bigger jets do it in no time.

It’s 2010.  Big year for me, as I’m entering my 6th decade.  You know what I mean.  I was born in the 60’s, learned to walk in the 70’s, play gtr and sing in the 80’s, formed a band and signed a record deal in the 90’s, got married and had a son in the 00’s, and now I stand on the edge of the 10’s.  Doesn’t seem like much when you put it like that does it?

Big year for Canada as well with the World watching Vancouver.  As many of you know, GBS us heading West next week to play a few show’s in the Olympic area.  It is going to be quite a thrill to be a part of it.

Personally, I’m heading out with brother Bernie a few days earlier in a pilgrimage that started the day the Olympics were awarded to Vancouver some five or six years ago.  That day, I contacted my brother and said,

“We are going to the Hockey”

That’s all I needed to say.  He knew what I meant.  We have been watching and playing hockey together for five of the six aforementioned decades.  The Vancouver Olympic Men’s Hockey competition could very well prove to be the greatest ice hockey tournament of all time.  It most certainly could be the best one held in Canada in our lifetimes.  Can’t wait to see it.  Great treat for me and Bern.

Still putting the finishing touches on the new GBS CD and looking forward to the release of Sean’s solo CD “Lullabies for Bloodshot Eyes” due out next week.  More about the both of them later.

It’s just past 7am in St. John’s.  The jet lag found me awake at 5:15 and I’ve been sitting trying and trying to stay quiet.  Neither is my forte.  Like clockwork, shortly after 7, I hear the first stirrings of the Prince.  There’s been far too many Skype suppers and computer hugs in the past 12 months.  Best make the most of the real ones.

Cheers,
Alan

6th Decade? ...man, I feel old!
And reading your schedule makes me tired (must be getting old?) and also makes me think (again) what an amazing man you are.

We are all anxiously awaiting all these new projects to surface!

Hope you and Bernie enjoy the Hockey and your Medal Ceremony gig (minor grumbling that we SOB's can't get Much Music down here) and that you still have that seemingly boundless energy left for the Colorado gigs in March!

I can't think of anyone who deserves a Double The Love Valentine's Day(s) more than you do. Hope you had a grand time with all the TOFOG fellows and that you find a way to get together again very soon. And I cannot wait until you feel free to become un-hushed about that project.

You and Bernie are going to have a wonderful time "at the hockey" - I can recall that same brotherly pairing in attendance at the World Juniors in Halifax back in 2003 - and at the gigs too. I don't head out until Tuesday, but we've made time for both hockey and curling during our Olympic adventure...and for a show or two as well, of course. Definitely a great treat.

Given your past track record, my guess is that you are going to be spectacular in your sixth decade.

Double the love? Fabulous!

New RC project? **SQUEEEEE** Fill us in when its all done will ya? I love the work you and Russell have done together!

As for your flight...wow! I don't think I could handle being on a plane for that long! 30 hours traveling? Must seem like a lifetime when you are longing for home.

"t’s 2010. Doesn’t seem like much when you put it like that does it?"

6 decades? Wow, that is a lot. But they've all been great. I was born and learned to walk in the 80's, started school in the 90's, finished school and became a GBS in the 00's,and now in the 10's, I'm in the second semester of my first year of college. Geebus, i've got four decades in...

Hope you and Bernie have a good time at the hockey game! If they're as good as they were last night (8-0 win), then you and Bernie will no doubt have a great time! Cheer extra loud for those of us that can't be there, k? ;)

I've pre-ordered Sean's album and have the mp3s. Sounding really good so far. Can't wait for the actual cd itself to come. And the new GBS record will be your best yet, but then again, isn't it always? ;)

Enjoy your time at home with your fair one and your little prince. If anyone deserves this time at home, you do.

God I hate when I make mistakes!

There should be an I in front of the t's, the word Fan should be after GBS.

That's what I get for typing too quickly.

What could you & RC be up to now Alan?  All these secrets!
I look up many a time to see planes flying overhead & I always wonder where they're going. I've never been on a plane because I'm afraid to fly but it's amazing to hear that you can get to all of those places within 30 hours! Maybe one day I'll get over my fear. I'd love to be able to go to Australia. Those koala bears are so cute. Check out you tube May 29/07 "orphaned baby koala bear". Hope you & your brother Bernie enjoy the Hockey!

Please don't get so busy in the coming months that you don't have time to be a part of Ships and Dip VII...we're counting on you!

Have a great time in Vancouver - both playing at the event and watching hockey. I went to the Olympics in Calgary in '88 and it was amazing!

Looking forward to hearing more about your RC project, just please tell me that it won't involve you growing another beard. Btw - can't wait for the release of the movie...any chance you lads will be included in the soundtrack in some way?

I live near an airport and I often watch the planes taking off.  People headed off to faraway places; people headed off to adventures unknown.  And I too have often thought about how amazing it is that, with the technology of airplanes, we can get to most places in the world in a day or two.  It's surreal, almost, to wake up in one city and go to bed in another city far away.  Long gone are the horse-and-buggy days!

So nice to have two Valentine's Days.  And even nicer that it sounds like you were able to have at least part of the second one at home with your wife.

Six decades, eh?  That's an interesting way to think about it.  I guess I have four.  Born in the 80s, learned to walk in the 80s, started Kindergarten in the 90s, grew up in the 90s, graduated high school in the 00s, finished my BA in the 00s, and will finish my MA in the 10s.

And about that hockey . . .

With my apologies to the Americans on this website, GO CANADA GO!!!  Let's keep some of those gold medals in this country!

I"m sure you and Bernie will have an amazing time watching those final games, especially if Canada is in them.  Wish I could be there!  Thank goodness for the magic of TV!

And have fun playing at the Victory Ceremonies too.  It's quite an honour to be asked to do something like that.  Hopefully that concert will be broadcast on TV!

Pleasure as always to hear from you again. I'm looking forward to a 17 hour flight from Seattle to St. John's in April (Cheap airfare is a b*tch).

New work with RC is always something nice to look forward to as is the upcoming album. Sean's solo album is incredible, when do we get one from you?

Have an amazing time at the hockey, and rock Vancouver hard enough that we can hear you in Seattle.

Much Love,
Jamie

Jeez man, for a moment I was scared you were secretly sixty with all that "sixth decade" realization... then I realized I could be forty by that same logic, and that maybe that's not really logical at all. You look awfully spry for sixty anyway, so whatever it is you're doing, keep it up :)
That's actually a pretty cool thought, only my span of decades is kind of boring, and a bit frumpy, as I've realized all of the really big changes were precipitated by finding stray cats. (It's how I later got married.) I don't know if that's really remarkable or even something one should admit to.

Loulabelle, I like that you suggested a solo Alan record because it gave me the image of a literally glowing CD full of the most fun, thought-provoking, and positive music in the world. (This is not to say anything bad about Sean's record. I love it. It's just the image I got.) So, you know, similar to Great Big Sea albums in certain ways, but actually luminous because of what it contains.
(Am I close?)

I agree with Amy about Woody Guthrie. He probably is the U.S. equivalent of Stomping Tom.

Hope you and Bern have a blast !!

You were over here Alan..? Great..!! Now you know where it is - PLEEEEAAAAASSSSEEE bring the lads back for some shows.. We're sadly deprived of quality entertainment in the land Down Under..

Hope we turned some great weather on for you - Coffs Harbour is a really beautiful part of the world (although I *KNOW* there's no place like home)..

I could equally say the same about Vancouver - we're watching the Olympics here and marvelling at how beautiful the place looks..

Just FYI - on John Williamson - he is an icon here. Has had plenty of famous songs - starting forty-odd years ago with a comedic record called "Old Man Emu" - and he's still going strong. Probably his most famous song is an unofficial Australian Anthem called "True Blue". Truly a great talent.. You can see/hear more of him at http://www.johnwilliamson.com.au/
