Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - January 5, 2010 - Toronto (Pearson Airport)

I just had a man’s hands in my pants.

In full public view.  I don’t recall that ever happening to me in the past.  Sure, there have been many hazy after parties, where things for a little out of hand, but I think I’d remember having some dude fish through my drawers while in full florescent light for all the world to see.  Heightened security is in full swing at the US Flight gates these days. Getting my private parts pawed by a security gent who must be hating his job just a little bit more today, is the price he and I share for yet another dudes political and/or religious agenda.

Could be worse I suppose.  If a gentle probing public feel is the worst thing that happens to me in 2010, I’m in good shape.  Not to mention the fact that his bashful, ‘sorry about this, sir’ whisper as he went 360 round the gear was actually kind of tender and heartfelt.

As I start this entry, I am sitting at Gate 168 in Toronto Airport awaiting a flight to New Orleans via Chicago.  As noted a while back, GBS is in the midst of the recording tracks that should make up the bulk of a new CD that we hope to have out there for all to enjoy in early Summer 2010.  I had a grand break home with the family and honestly can’t wait to get back at the new tunes to get them up to their full potential.

But enough about me.  Dear Reader, if you don’t mind a shameless plug in this forum, I’d like to give you the heads up about a TV show that debuts tomorrow, Wednesday night on CBC TV at 9pm EST.

The Republic of Doyle, was created by Allan Hawco and Perry Chafe.  Some of you may recognize Allan as the pouty actor in the GBS “Clearest Indication” video.  But that’s hardly at the top of his CV.  He is also the Director of the Company Theatre Troupe in Toronto, and has starred in a variety of Films and TV shows and series. For those of you who read all the liner notes (I do) is the bro of Greg Hawco who played percussion on the first GBS CD.  Allan graduated from National Theatre school, Greg has a Masters in Percussion from McGill.  Talented buggers those Hawcos.

Perry Chafe is might be funniest person I’ve ever met.  And I met him a long time ago. Before Kindergarten, if memory serves correctly, as we both grew up in Petty Harbour and went through every year of school and University together.  I stood pretty close to him when he got married, and he stood pretty close to me when I did the same.

So full disclosure, before the plug.  The boys are my friends.

That said, I can tell you with all honesty that I have seen one advance episode of this show and it is very funny, engaging, and shows St. John’s in a light that has never been seen on film before now.  Our quaint little fishing city backdrops this Father and Son Private Detective Comedy/Drama as a town in transition.  Big oil and prosperity has come to town and brought with it new world problems to an old world mentality.

The characters are as real as I know from St. John’s and it will give you a dandy view of the underbelly of the town I love so well.  I am not a TV Promo guy, so I’ll leave the cool descriptions to the pros.

Check out the Website here:  http://www.republicofdoyle.com/

Check out the Trailer here: http://www.cbc.ca/nl/blogs/seen/2009/11/trailers.html

By the way, to keep this somewhat self-serving, you might notice a familiar tune for the opening and closing credits of the show.  Thanks to the gents for including us in the project.

In any case, congrats to the lads.  This is a massive achievement and I’m proud of them hope sixty million people watch the show for the next 12 weeks.

Off to New Orleans.

Cheers,
Alan

I will try to remember your attitude the next time I fly!

I so wish I could see the Republic of Doyle here but alas, I didn't get my Christmas pony either. Let's hope it comes out as a DVD after the first of many seasons!  (If I am in error and I CAN somehow see this show here, please let me know)

Have a productive and fun session back in NO! Early summer, you say -- I like it!!

Hey Alan,

Wonderful way to kick off an FTR. And it tis a wonderful attitude that you possess. Even though the gentlemen that had to search your 'gear' was polite about it, I'm not so sure I'd want the same done to me. Oh well, such is the price we pay for security.

And you don't ever have to apologize about talking about yourself. I'm not sure about everyone else, but I certainly don't mind it.

Thanks for shedding more light on Republic of Doyle. I've seen the promos a few times now, and from what I've seen, its looks like its going to be a hit Canadian TV show. Both Allan Hawco and Perry Chafe have done a wonderful job with it, and I will be firmly planted in front of the tv watching it tomorrow night.

And yes, I remember Allan Hawco as the pouty, sexy guy in Clearest Indication. I was sure to point this out to my American friends in March. They didn't believe me at first, so I had to show them the video.

Definitely noticed the music during the commercial. Very cool that such a great song is to be used for the opening and closing credits. You should all be very proud of yourselves.

Can't wait for the new record. I'm sure that it will be your best yet, but then again, that's what we fans say about every record. Anywho, I'll be sure to get it when it comes out.

Sorry that this is so long, but there's one more thing. I was reading through your FTRS today (right from the beginning), and when I added them up, you had 190.

Now its 191, the first FTR of 2010.

Can't wait for # 200!

Cheers, and thanks for sharing,
Krista

I was surfing across channels last night and caught the tail end of the Republic Of Doyle trailer, hearing only your voice singing that final, low, growling Oh Yeah. Even without all of the other high accolades of the show's talented creators to recommend it, I'd be watching tomorrow night for that reason alone.

(For those who don't get CBC, according to the Republic of Doyle Facebook site, full episodes will be avaible online, at the show's official webiste, I am assuming).

Flying has indeed become quite the adventure, hasn't it? Not sure what will be required by the next time I fly, in just a few weeks, as well as by the next time you fly. Depending on what new agendas have arisen in the interim, the rubber gloves might be making an appearance next. Or we might all just be flying naked. You did write today's episode beautifully, by the way - "his bashful, ‘sorry about this, sir’ whisper as he went 360 round the gear was actually kind of tender and heartfelt" is simply perfect. Quite the visual image evoked. Excellent writing.

Have a wonderful time getting those new tunes up to full potential. I hope this CD winds up being as much as you want it to be as is possible and that those new tunes wind up being something you will love performing in the months to come. Enjoy beautiful New Orleans as much as you can while you can too.

Thanks so much for the descriptive beginning of your tale; the ensuing visual was quite hilarious! Welcome back to the States - where we don't just shake your hand in greeting.  ;o)

I have seen the trailers for "Republic of Doyle", and like Sheila, will be reduced to waiting, ever impatiently, for the DVD release of what is sure to be a hit show.  Best wishes for success to your mates and looking forward to GBS X!!

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Chiming in with the Kim and Sheila, waiting for the DVD to come out or a friend to record episodes for me!  I saw an article by a Toronto writer about the show recently ~ it sounds like a well done piece from both your descriptions...although he too, could have been biased, as the author's last name was Doyle also!

While this year has much in store for us as fans, it seem to be just bursting with great things for you and the band.

I am looking forward to hearing some of that new material in March :o)

Wow I can't believe that they are now actually doing that. That's so weird I was just talking about that with a friend of mine the other day. I totally thought that they would never do that. You sure proved me wrong.

Anyway, hope the flight was good. Definately uber excited about the new album and I will be watching the Republic of Doyle tomorrow.

I had to read that first sentence twice! Couldn't believe what I was reading. Then I remembered that GBS had some fine tuning to do in New Orleans & you would be flying. It's sad to see the way things have become but I guess it's necessary for everyone's safety. By the way, I forgot to mention on your last FTR that that was a great picture! We'll be sure to check out "The Republic of Doyle", it sounds great. Maybe this can tide me over until we can actually get to visit Newfoundland, hopefully this summer. I tried to check out the website & trailer that you mentioned but it just says "coming soon". Take care.

I certainly hope that you enjoy being back in NOLA. Very much looking forward to the new album and carefully plotting budgets to allow for it. (have to plot this far ahead, thanks to bills)

Hope your flight was good.

I wonder if that airport security guy knew that you were Alan Doyle.  That would sure make things extra-awkward for him, wouldn't it?--but, at the same time, and in a very weird and creepy way, kind of thrilling.  Such knowledge could also explain why he was so apologetic.

I am surprised that they didn't take you into a private room to explore your "gear."  I've been patted down at the airport in full view of everyone, but I thought they gave travellers private rooms when the security people have to explore beneath the clothes.

And here's a question: Now that they've explored with their hands, would you rather have had them use their new scanners to simply take a picture of your body beneath your clothes?

But, the show sounds awesome.  I'm glad I went on the GBS website today (Jan. 6) or I would've missed the premiere.  I don't have much time to watch TV, but I'd make time for a show like that.  And it is neat to see St. John's portrayed as something other than a fishing town.  I don't have anything against fish or fishing, but it is nice to see something different.  Hopefully the show will become a success; I'd hate to see it cancelled after a few episodes.  And it's nice to see "Oh Yeah" used for the opening and closing credits.

Can't wait for the new CD!  Your tenth CD in the tenth year of the new millennium.  Awesome!

Welcome back down South! We have adjusted the temperatures to make you all feel more at home. You could have at least brought pretty snow with you! :~)

Can't wait to hear the final product!

As for the airport adventure, without fail I am always the one who either has them go through my luggage or who is selected to go through the 'blow up box' in the security area, the machine that puffs air at you to sniff for drugs and/or explosives. I was told by a friend who works for the government that those who frequently fly internationally tend to be profiled. Fortunately, I have never gotten the "SSSS" designation on my bording pass--that codes for a strip search.

Now you have another story to add to the colorful book of your life! :~)

Ohhh, a thousand thoughts were running through my head as I read the first part of your FTR...most of which are not for family viewing so it is best I just bite my tongue, and NOT let my fingers wonder over the keyboard and write something we would all regret *big sigh*

With that said, I will be traveling to Ireland and Scotland in March and I will try to have the same attitude that you had if I get chosen for a personal inspection...but trust me, I'll be asking for the best looking GUY if someone wants to search my...well, enough on that too :o)

Since I have great Canadian friends, I have heard about "Republic of Doyle" and was extremely jealous that I would not be able to get it in California -- glad that the episodes will be on line.

I will also add that I am looking forward to the new album and hope you and the b'ys are enjoying the Big Easy.

Take care of yourself and keep up the great writing, even if your writing gives me wicked thoughts, they also makes me smile.

I hope you are well (my mom says you are-she sees you at Nova Physiotherapy when you break yourself up from time to time!)

Best wishes to you on the success of your movie this year!

Dude you got a problem with your band's board here. Check out your own King Alan thread. Seperate from the hypocrisy of getting told to treat you like a sacred married man when you don't act that way yourself since when is it okay for one fan to slam and insult another fan and then all the board "moderator" says is Thanks Ladies to her friends who did the slamming and now lets move on? That's bullshite dude and you know it.

On happier notes good luck with the record and have a few hurricanes (the drink) in the Big Easy

I just watched Republic of Doyle.  It looks like a really neat show.  I loved the way they blended the traditional and the modern in a way that sort of looks incongruent but somehow fits.  They also hit a pretty good blend of drama and comedy.  I also loved the images of the city; St. John's is loaded with opportunities for amazing photos.

My only complaint is that the only part of "Oh Yeah" they played during the opening credits was the chorus when the only lyrics being sung are "Oh yeah" repeatedly.  They skipped some of the really good stuff!  Oh, well.

Thanks for telling us about the show, Alan.  I might just be hooked already!

Well, our ratings are in for "The Republic of Doyle" & we give it two thumbs up!! Congratulations to Allan Hawco & Perry Chafe for creating such a great show! We really enjoyed it & can't wait to see the rest of the episodes. The Great Big Sea song "Oh Yeah" was the perfect opening for the show & for the commercial breaks. I don't recall having ever seen a show of this sort that was filmed in Newfoundland. What a quaint pretty city with the cute colored houses & the beautiful scenery. The Newfoundland tourism commercial only added to the charm.  The acting was fantastic with true down to earth characters & humour & it was a nice unexpected touch with the Calgarian tourists & their hats. I have to mention though that I found the credits to roll by a little too quickly, but other than that, Don't change a thing!!

P.S. Hope that GBS #10/2010 is going well & that you don't mind my
humour re the ***Great Big Sea Community Times*** title.
    Take care.

Having lived on Duckworth Street over Marty's restaurant in 1972-73 and toured again in 1980 I too was looking forward to the Republic of Doyle but alas my wife and I were sorely disappointed.  The setting is gorgeous of course but not a cloud in sight and no rain so will all the episodes be shot in brilliant sunshine?  I listened in vain or almost in vain for any Newfoundland accent but I guess the producers weren't brave enough to challenge prime time mainlanders. The story was pretty lame and I guess it's a comedy but I cringed more often than I chuckled.  We are going back to St. John's in June and I'm confident that we won't be disappointed in the real article.

Hah! Last time I flew out of St. John's, I was randomly pulled out of line to be searched more thoroughly than I have EVER been searched ANYWHERE. Mostly over the clothes, like a good 1950s schoolgirl, but still. It tickled. Afterward, I told the (very polite and nice) people that I felt like I should get a kiss goodbye.

Did manage to watch RoD - it was FANTASTIC. I literally jumped up and down and squealed with delight, then I watched it about 8 more times.
