Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - October 1, 2009 - On the Bus (Between Chicago and Milwaukee)

Just passed the skyline of Chicago en route to Milwaukee.  A longer stint than usual at the US Border has turned long drive into a marathon.  Days like these, I kneel and give praise to whatever God provided us with the good fortune to advance to the tour bus level.   We’ve done drives as long as these in vans and it is no fun at all.

Had an enjoyable week of Rink Rock in Canada.  Sarnia, Sudbury and Sault St Marie.  Great nights.  I should note however that one of the great fears as a live performer is to stand on stage and say, “Its great to be here in Denver!”, when you are actually in Dallas.  This fear is heightened significantly when you do three towns back to back to back whose names start with the same letter.  The alert is higher, of course, because the chances of a slip of the tongue are so greatly increased when alliteration comes into play.  An internal monologue is required.

“Great to be here in SSSSSSSS….think about it now……Sudbury!”

It was grand to have Jeremy Fisher on board for those days.  He is a grand fella.  I’ve has my super portable recording rig on the road and have been writing and recording demos for the new GBS CD as much as possible.  Sat in the back lounge of the bus and wrote with Sean and Jeremy on a tune that Sean debuted in the Solo Slot last night.  Caught a wee vid of the first demo recording of it on my iPhone.
Click the image below to watch the video!

GBS Bus

Oh the technology.  My education continues.

Speaking of higher learning, I learned that ‘midget’ is a derogatory term last night.  Unfortunately, I learned this after blurting it out in front of 1000 people.  Apparently, “Little People” is the preferred term.  Apparently there is a reality TV series of the same name.  Hmm.  It is not my place to judge one’s chosen nomenclature. But it is my place to apologize for my not keeping up to speed on Political Correctness.  Much apologies to Little People everywhere.  Rest assured it will not happen again.

Rolling to Milwaukee.  Sounds like a Blues song doesn’t it?  Perhaps another back lounge writing session is in order.

Keep you posted.

Cheers,
Alan

Hey Alan,

Glad you're enjoying being back on the road.  I do envy you guys for your tour bus and all of its conveniences.  It would sure make those two-, three-, four-, five-day long road trips much easier.

Can't wait for the new CD!  The song sounds great.  Thanks for the clip.

One thing I admire about you guys is that you're always looking forward to the next new thing.  I mean, I'm sure you all have more than enough money to retire on, yet you're constantly writing new songs and looking ahead to the next CD.  I mean, Fortune's Favour still has a bit of it's "new CD status," but you're already writing songs for the next one.  Good job, and thanks.

Any insider info about the new CD?  What will it be like?  What themes will it focus on?  How folksy will it be?

I see you still have the beard.  I was hoping you'd have shaved it off by now.  No offence, but it kind of makes you look like a castaway or a hippie.

I'm not a little person or a midget but, if I was, I don't think I'd like the term "little person."  Why?  Because that's what we call children.  I wouldn't want to be called a "dwarf" (because of the mythological associations the word has), but I'd personally rather be called a "midget" than a "little person."  But, hey, that's me.

Hope to see you in concert again soon!

don't be quite so hard on yourself Alan - the Sean O'Sullivan theatre actually only seats 538 people, plus the staff - so wasn't quite 1000 that you learned your lesson in front of!!  no big deal anyway.  was good to spend an evening in the company of the band - had been an extremely difficult day for me.
oh, did you all receive the bag of home made dog treats that my niece sent along? Glenn assured us that you would receive them!

Hi Alan!!

Thank you so much for the demo video! I absolutely CANNOT WAIT for the new GBS CD, it should be fantastic (just like the previous 10)!! ;)

Also quadruple+ thank yous for coming to St. Catharines & performing at Sean O'Sullivan Theatre at MY UNIVERSITY!! It was a phenomal show & I hope that you come back very soon!! It may small, but it packs a punch with fun people. :)

Don't worry about your comment either, you're definitely not the first person (celeb or otherwise) to be politically incorrect.

Enjoy the rest of your tour & looking forward to 2010!! Applause & many thanks again & again. =)

It's great to be here on The Ordinary Fear of God site!  Oops, sorry lol I meant The Great Big Sea site! You see Alan, it can happen to anyone! Nice touch with that video of the first demo recording. Looks like you've formed an attachment to your facial hair. Oh well, I guess it will keep you warm in winter lol. My daughter (who by the way, shares the same birth date as your son) will be so happy to hear that you are writing & recording demos for the new GBS cd. She told me that she was going to call you & ask you to hurry up & make a new CD because she is so tired of hearing me play the same songs over & over. She was only joking of course. Who could ever get tired of hearing GBS! But.....I have caught her singing along when she thinks that I don't hear her. I think that I'm turning into a GBS addict. I find myself waking up early so I can listen to GBS music & then I seem to have to go for all these messages.... I have pulled into quite a few parking lots & found people looking at me sideways as "When I'm up(I can't get down) is playing quite ... well, loudly along with some of my other favorites:
Ordinary Day  / Feel it turn  /   England  /  Here & now
Long lost love / Dream to live / Consequence free /  Hard case
Walk on the moon /  As fast as I can / Banks of Newfoundland
Heart of stone.
Have a Great Big Sea day!
A day without Great Big Sea music is like a day without sunshine!

You wrote, and you wrote something Real - this is so good to read. Keep working on the new tunes, doing all you need to do to get them ready to go on the next album. The new song about Home you did last night is beautiful and so moving; the rest of your new material is eagerly awaited, with high hopes of hearing it all soon. But however long it takes, it will be worth the wait. You are always worth the wait.

"Little people" has always sounded a bit foolish to me. Technically speaking, lots of us are little people. But as you point out, it's hard to argue with a group's chosen nomenclature. No worries about using the term at the show, though, I don't think. It seemed like a pretty forgiving - and adoring - crowd to me.

Thank you for keeping us posted. It is very much appreciated.

Hey Alan, I wish I had a tour bus to travel around in and play shows! I really envy you guys.

Great job in Sudbury! I was there, the big tall guy standing directly in front of you. I've learned a lot of the GBS library on guitar and being so close to the stage has showed me that I don't play everything as correctly as I thought! I was also stoked to hear Gideon Brown live since it's one of my favorites. Now if I could only figure out how to strum and sing Let It Go at the same time...

But great show guys... Sudbury has had a few famous artists showing up recently, usually along the lines of 50 Cent or the Backstreet Boys, which is unusual for a smaller city. It was refreshing to actually have one of my favorite bands come to town. I usually need to travel to Toronto for that. So kudos to you guys for a great show, and a big thank you from all of us here in Sudbury for stopping by; we really appreciate it.

As for the midget comment, I thought dwarf was the accepted term? Little person just sounds not that nice. I suppose with a group of 500+ people it's hard to please everyone.

Really looking forward to the new album guys, keep 'em coming!

Cheers,
Adam

PS: Maybe we can jam the next time you guys are down.

Woohoo.  Can't wait for another CD and hopefully another great concert here on the good old Rock.  Celebrating my 50th b-day tonight and the entertainment will be nothing but Great Big Sea music playing continuously.

As for the comment about "midget", don't worry about it.  There's so much political correctness these days, we almost need a new dictionary to define everything.

Anyway, have a great US tour, but come back home for another.

Live and let learn.  There were far fewer than 1000 people and you responded very well.  Thanks for the show, it was definitely worth staying late at work for. It seemed looser (in a good way) than other shows I've had the priviledge of attending.  Glad you like our woods too, they're my favourite part of living around here.

Hey, Alan and gang:

I'll be front row tomorrow in Glen Ellyn and welcome to the 'burbs of Chicago.

I've twice seen you live so far, once at Schuba's in Chicago about three years ago and was front row, stage right.  Sorry; I was the one that brought the people who thought it was a sitting concert like you were playing Orchestra Hall or something.

My wife and I saw you last year in Madison at The Majestic; what a great barn.  Got there a half hour before doors opened and were front row center and loved every note and overtone.

Tomorrow night will be the first "date night" out for us since the birth of our son on August 20th.  Can I make a request for the set list if it's not already been established?  My wife is a *huge* fan of Lucky You, Lucky Me.  It's her favorite that you sing.

Any way it could be worked in tomorrow night?  If not as a dedication (her name is Kelly), then just inserted without comment or fanfare would be a big thing.

Thanks, guys.  Keep making that magical music that just moves the spirit to the core.

While you might be a wee bit challenged on the technology front, we love the video all the same...new material and glimpse of real life on the bus...fab!  Maybe you can put some of it on the bonus DVD that will likely accompany the new album (loved the last one!)...well, maybe as an outtake real!

Thanks for a great show in Burlington at the I Love the Escarpment event...you were in fine form...it was a blast!  Sarah and Jeremy were great as well...too bad he only got to play 3 songs...

As for the little people remark, people should remember that based on your character you always have the best intentions...that's what counts!

Keep up the writing...can't wait for the new CD!

No offense taken on "midget", Alan.  And the terminology battles are fierce, people, trust me.  The issue with "midget" tends to be that it is the one thrown at you by people who are actively trying to be mean, not just by people who don't know different terms.  I've never heard anybody call somebody "little person" in a deliberately derogatory manner.  But I fully agree that "little person" sounds like something you would call a child.  I've heard "short statured" but frankly that makes it sounds like I'm short but not all THAT short.  I'm 4'2".  I'm really really really short because of an orthopedic issue.  I don't know really what else to call myself.  It doesn't really matter day-to-day anyway.  It sure doesn't have anything to do with my love for GBS.

So are you guys going to hit Boise again?  Pretty please?  With sugar on top?  And a cherry?  I'd be there, I promise, right down front.  Way down front.  Keep looking down, I'm down there somewhere!  :)

Three chords and the truth...love it!  Waiting for my turn hearing the solos live!

Had to laugh at the S sounding towns...when I was telling someone several weeks ago which shows Jeremy Fisher was playing on, I referred to it just that way -- no disrespect meant, I've just never had the pleasure of visiting them.

Going back to an earlier post, I am just about finished watching Anvil doc - debuted tonight on VH1 -- quite sobering but their hearts are in the right place, I guess. I hope you guys don't often come to blows like Lips and Robb do:) Had to laugh at the drummer's name being Robb Reiner (ya know Spinal Tap and all).  A musician once told me that they don't find Spinal Tap funny; that it rings too close to the truth!

Truly enjoyed the show in Milwaukee last week.  What is it with rain and Great Big Sea?  Went to Chicago last year to see you and it rained and then again here at home in Milwaukee?  At least this show was indoors!  Loved the Violent Femmes reference and sing-a-long.

You guys always have a great show and I do hope you come back to Milwaukee soon.  The Pabst was a great venue for you guys and I think it should be a yearly trip??!!

I hope to make a trip to Newfoundland to see a show there someday.  My girl has family history in Newfoundland so to see a show there for her would be truly special.  I introduced her to the band and she's hooked!

Hey Alan, if you decide to follow the advice of the folks here and shave (and personally, I like it as is), could you send the beard vibes and/or clippings on to my husband? Thanks. He's starting to look younger than me.

Also, speaking as someone who should have political correctness applied to self-descriptive terms, you're just fine. :P Midget and dwarf were accepted medical terms at one point, just like moron, mongoloid (which is a million times more offensive when you consider the root), water head (today it's called hydrocephaly, which translates to the same)... it's a losing game because someone is always going to get offended "for those who can't." And to compound this, I have a friend who narrowly escaped the Shortness of Stature license restriction and she hates "little people" for myriad reasons. And that is the end of my linguistics lesson...

Great beard.

Hi Alan,

We saw you in Cape Cod. This was my first time seeing you guys in concert. You were amazing. I got the tickets as an Anniversary present for my parents. We're from Toronto but just happened to be vacationing in the Cape that week. We were in the back and got bumped to the front about 5 rows away from you. I have to admit, this present was selfish because I love you just as much as they do and got to enjoy it too. I have never heard my mother scream in excitement before. Thanks for that. My sisters enjoyed it too. I'm 22, they're 11 and 8 years old. You can see your music is loved by all generations.

Anyways, I know this had nothing to do with your post but I thought i'd share! :)  Keep up the great work! I love you!

Looking forward to your show at the Galaxy Theater in the OC in November.
Don't know if you've played here before, so oblige a wee suggestion, in regards to your journal, on the "It's great to be in 'whatever city you're in' dilemma.

Greeting the crowd at the Galaxy with "It's great to be here in Santa Ana", may get a muttled, yea, pathetic response.  Reason being, Santa Ana is largely businesses and most of your attendees will likely be habitants of the beach cities and south county.

"It's great to be in Orange County" or "...great to be in the OC" or the locals joke "...great to be here behind the Orange Curtain" (A reference to our proud separation from LA's mixed bag of tricks).  Any of the above should make for a rouser.

Have no doubts your music will make pagans here into GBS believers, and make me out the genius for discovering you first. It'll be grand.

Hello Allan and Boys!

I am going to LA, California specifically for your Nov. 12th concert!  Living north of Edmonton, Alberta at the moment.  I have a friend in LA who absolutely loves GBS and frequently quotes lyrics from your songs on his facebook communications.  He is quite the guitarist himself and can't get enough of GBS.  He chews on every lyric and praises your music at every opportunity.

I haven't seen him in over four years but after finally getting on facebook (after the nagging & ranting of my friends and family), I just could not believe how hard core a musician he had become since moving from Edmonton to LA in the mid-eighty's and how much he values and respects your work!

Yes we are in our 40's and although my life over the past ten years or so has been, relatively, a sober one, beautifully wrapped up with my kids and our western family life here, I feel the need to scuff the cobblestone with my LA friend as he is thrilled to be going to your concert!  He dreams about getting to NL one day, and when he is ready, I will be his personal tour guide.

Now he and his friends, being from the west coast, haven't wiffed the "old black rum" before...and I just happened to have scooped a couple of bottles of "SCREECH" fresh off the 'Rock' that will put his love of GBS to the "real test"!!  See how many lyrics he'll remember half way through the fog of a bottle of the good stuff!  I promise I won't let him get tanked before your concert - he & I both want to remember every moment.

Now if you boys wish to join us for a jigger or two at the end of the show, we'd be happy to make your aquaintance!!  My friend has quite a few little places that are quaint, down home like (yes even in LA) with great food.  We would be delighted if we could break the "Hard Bread" with you!  Well, I know you have another concert the next night and probably have big LA plans already set for that evening, but ya never know unless you ask!

At the very least, it would be an honour for my friend to meet you.  If you are able to slip one person back stage to shake your hand after the LA concert, I can tell you, this man will be the one!  I'm being very bold here (life is short)and realize we are two amongst millions who would love to shake your hands and belt back a jigger of Screech or ice cold Black Horse Beer, but I just have to send the request up to the Gods to be fulfilled!
Your concert will be fantastic!  I can imagine how the triumph of your finest craft will leave LA shaking sand out of their Speedo's and stars out of their heads for a long while!!

I went home to NL this summer - first time in five years!  Last time was 2004.  Saw you (GBS) playing at that time on George Street for the 20th Anniversary of the George Street Festival.  Obviously when I left the staggering allyway back in 1982 to move to Alberta, they were at a lost for business and had to come up with a 'festival of sorts' to drum up the business that had moved away with me over the next year! ;-) Hence my crowning title "queen of george street 1982".
My friends & I died laughing when we heard your lyrics "...queen of george street just went walking...spent three hours on her hair..."!  I don't know what I used back then to make my hair go north and stay there till the crawl home at the end of any given night (morning), but man, when I was home this past summer, I had to get back into the "Black Horse Beer" in order to get the limited edition caps that came in every dozen - it was that or dig through the moth balls at mom's to find a bandana!!  I forgot about the wind - up at Cape Spear etc.  Guess we were protected from the wind on George Street back then with the wall of pubs all around us!

I missed the George Street 25th Anniversary this year by 5 days!  This year the trip was all about my kids, very important for them to re-connect with their Newfie family.  My three b'ys are 14, 10 & 6 and I took the two older ones to your concert in Edmonton a few years back.  We were on the floor, front & center of the stage, flashing messages of comradery on green construction paper to you & the b'ys and waving our full-size Newfie flag across the crowd (which you all signed later as I gave it to a security guard to bring back stage - my boys thought this was so amazing!).

My second son's name is Lucas and at one year of age, he figured out how to turn on the CD player.  He had three favorite CD's, one was GBS 'up', and you guessed it - 'Lukey' was his dance-his-diaper-off favorite song!

Obviously, I don't do these "comment-on-famous-peoples-blogs" thing very often as surely I have overstayed my welcome with the rambling on here.  I found your web page as a result of looking for the kind of venue you will be playing in on Nov.12.  I don't know if you are able to get my email address from my membership to this page but by all means go for it if you can.  Love to hear from you!

I'm not sure if we shall meet in LA, but I will flash the sign, on a piece of green construction paper(as I did back at the Edmonton concert).  It will say, once again, "Queen of George Street 1982 Here!"  If it catches your eye, have your security either throw us out or invite us back to meet you.  I don't think they'll let us get in with the Screech (you'll have to join us back in the kitchen) but for sure, I'll bring the "Jam Jams!"
Thank you for reading.
Enjoy your tour - it won't be a blur...these are the glory days!

Sincerely Sealed,
BlackHorse
