Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - July 20, 2009 - Surrey, England (On Set)

Three weeks to go.  I have recently learned that principal photography will wrap on Friday, August 7th.  All things being well, I’ll be home by Sunday the 9th.

Since my last post the entire production shifted to Wales and we had a blast on the beach I Pembroke shire.  As many have documented on the net, we shot some scenes of epic proportion.  One day, I rode my horse, Arthur, across the beach amongst a group of nearly 200 other horses and riders.  I was part of a fight scene with several hundred soldiers, half dozen boats, and several hundred archers.

Many of us stayed in our trailers on the beach and had a great time ‘roughing it’.  We bbq-ed each night and rode our bikes along the beautiful Welsh coastline.  There were rumours around that some of us sat around the fire and sang songs till the wee hours, but I cannot confirm or deny these allegations.

We’ve since moved back to the greater London area.  We filmed on a river at Virginia Water and currently I am sitting under a massive French castle and am watching a few hundred fully costumed medieval archers prepare to attack.  I might even join them.

Bob and brother Bern are in town and hope they will come down to check out the whole spectacle today.  Had a grand night out with our Bob as he was passing through the UK over the weekend.  Had not seen Bob since we were on stage at the Juno’s in March.  That is about 17 weeks ago.  I have not gone that long without seeing Sean and Bob, since I met them in late 1992.  I managed to talk him into staying a couple of extra days so he could come check out the set.

It should not be long now, till the whole team is reunited as this grand detour is winding its way back to the previously planned route.  We should be rolling on the 15th or 16th as we head to Cape Cod.

Keep you posted.

Cheers,
Alan

Glad to here that the filming is going on schedule. Will get to enjoy the 5 of you back together again in Cape Cod.

Your description of your evenings along the Welsh Coast has me wishing I could be there. To heck with the movie, that alone sounds like the greatest fun.

I'm with Fran. Your time shooting on the Welsh coast 'sounds like the greatest fun'.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Molson. That's where I first saw GBS live, 11 years ago. I was sitting in the nose bleeds. You were all about two inches tall. But the crowd--THE CROWD--was larger than life. Totally fun loving! I was hooked.

I haven't seen a GBS show there since, so this August date seems almost like a bookend somehow...the 'shelf' (to squeeze the metaphor) is loaded with lively people and music and the finest memories.

Thanks. Excited about the film too. :)

Can't wait for the movie! Haven't been this excited about a period movie since "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"! :) I read that bit about sitting under the French Castle and...well... you know, couldn't help but go there!
Alan, you and the guys still have a standing invitation to come to Vrigina and have a private kitchen party at my Knights of Columbus home any time! Looking forward to the concert at Wolf Trap in August!

Hey Alan,

I'm glad Bob was "passing through" the UK - lol, that makes Bob sound like some kind of wealthy globe-trotter, businessman, or diplomat.  But I'm glad you got to see him.  Sometimes it's just as hard to spend long periods of time away from our friends as it is to spend time away from our families - if those friends are as close as you, Bob, and Sean must be.

Poor Sean.  Now both you and Bob have abandoned him in St. John's.  Oh, well; at least St. John's is a pretty awesome place to be left abandoned in.

Try to enjoy the time you have left on the set.  I'm sure you'll miss it when it's over.  But both reunions (you and your family; and you, Sean, and Bob) will come faster than you think.  Try to spend some time with your family before hopping on the road again.  After all, you'll have lots of time to chat with your bandmates while you're travelling around playing music for us.

Can't wait for the movie!  And can't wait to see you live in concert again, (sigh), whenever that will be.

Alan,
It's so special when a star (you are one) takes time to send out feelers to his fans.

I am taking my daughter to see you guys at the Molson Amp. Aug 22 and then seeing you at the Empire Theatre in my town, Belleville on Sept 28.  Goodness Gracious..Great Bigs of Sea.

Can't wait to see/meet you.
