Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - March 5, 2009 - Cedar Falls, Iowa - On the Bus

Back on the bus following an interesting few weeks around the BNL Cruise.
First of all let me say that I’m sad to hear Steve Page is leaving the Ladies, but wish him and the remaining lads well in their endeavors.  With their talents and energy, I am sure we’ll be hearing a lot from all hands for a long time to come.

Now to get some news off my chest.  I’m terrible at keeping secrets, so this announcement comes with great relief.  Yours truly has been cast as the Troubadour, Allan A’Dayle in the new Universal Pictures Untitled Robin Hood Film.  The film is to star Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, and to be directed by Ridley Scott.  If you recall, I had to scoot to LA after the big fundraising gig in Toronto last December.  I went, Lute in hand, to read and sing for the part and must have done all right, as I’ve been offered and accepted the gig.

For a number of days prior to and following the BNL Cruise, I was in Australia with Russell, and some of the other Merry Men, training in Horse Riding, Archery, Weapons Training and a few other skills required for the role.  It was great fun, I must say, to look at your schedule for the day and have it read like a 12 year old boy’s fantasy; bows and arrows at 10am, sword fighting at 11am etc.

Like all good things, this opportunity comes with some sacrifice.  GBS will have to bow out of this year’s Merlefest, Chautauqua and Iowa Irish Festival gigs, as the film’s shooting schedule does not allow me to make it to the Festivals from the sets in the UK.  Too bad, as we all wanted to join up with the long list of heralded music at those events.  The organizers have been very understanding and all hands hope we can make it there as soon as possible, maybe even 2010.

Filming should take up the bulk of the second quarter of 2009, so our March concerts in the US and the Canadian Dates with Spirit of the West will be the last chance to see us for a few months.  It will be business as usual in the GBS camp in the second half of this year as we plan to tour and record as per normal.

I am very grateful to the Cast and Crew of GBS for their permission and support for this sabbatical, and hope you’ll continue to join me here as I hope to post regular blogs throughout the film shoot.  Don’t expect me to give away the plot or anything, but I hope to share as much of this experience as possible with everyone who enjoys this diary.

Should be fun.

Cheers,
Alan

This is Murph who still remembers your "Red Is The Rose" serenade in NYC a few years ago. I am SO happy you are joining Russell on Robin Hood. It should be great fun. Wish I could see you both shooting those bows and romping through the forest. Tell us more about the instrument you will play as A'Dayle.

I hope you have the time of your life being a Merry Man, and also with any and all good things that might follow after. With you and Gordon Pinsent both in this film, it could be the highest-grossing film ever in Newfoundland. As ever, you make it so easy to be proud of you.

Too bad the tights aren't historically accurate. Damn.

Oh. My. God. :)

I was going to go see this movie anyway--especially after the announcement of Cate Blanchett joining the cast--but this just bumped up the likelihood I'll go see it on opening day. :D Huge congratulations and very much looking forward to seeing you and Russell on the same screen. This should hopefully tide me over until Seattle gets to see you on the same stage!

I KNEW it had something to do with Russell.  All this secrecy and rumors that something "big" was coming Alan's way.... but I was a bit off.  I had suspected he was tapped to do the soundtrack for the film.  Not ACT in it!  Whatdya know about that.

Good for the rest of the boys to let Alan run off and play for a little while!

Can't wait!

And have a great show tonight in my old stomping grounds!

Well Done, Alan!

I had a feeling something like this was bound to happen sometime...

Around our house, my 9 year old son is the most excited about the news! He is into Archery - he got a 30 lb long bow in the fall- , loves Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood" film and it probably goes without saying that he loves Great Big Sea.  He even has a piece of Oak from the Forest, with a figure of Robin Hood carved into it, sent to him by a Great-Aunt who lives in Nottingham, hanging on his wall!

"12 year old boy's fantasy"? He's got it bad!
I have a feeling this film will be long anticipated around here!

Congratulations!

Wow, Alan, that's totally awesome.  It sounds like it'll be an absolute blast.  C'mon, running around the forest shooting bows and arrows!  And you get to shoot in England!

Just curious: How much time do you get to spend playing and singing in it?  Are they going to make you disguise your Newfoundland accent?

When will I be able to go see it?

Congrats!

Also, does "record" mean another new album?  Because that would be awesome.

I have a question though.  At the concert last night, they announced you would be at the Irish Fest in Waterloo/Cedar Falls.  Was the announcement really wrong?  I already had 10 new fans lined up and ready to be there.  Now, I'm sad.

Also, did Samantha survive to the end of the show?  One of my friends thought she saw her fly into a light.  (For those not there, Samantha was the ladybug they sang to.  It was hilarious.)

I'm really EXCITED for you, Alan! It should be a lot of fun.

All this training for the movie/sword fighting (etc) really seem like a boy's dream. Way to go!

But whatever you do, don't quit your band... (you know... like a famous Steve Page, we all know). Please!

See you in St. Patty's Day!

Alan:  Could not be happier for you!  We saw you in Cedar Falls...my hubby drove me 12 hours from Detoit/Ann Arbor MI to see the concert.  (Thank God I am married to an Iowa boy. It was fun introducing my Iowa in-laws to the music of GREAT BIG SEA.  I'm meeting up with my Toronto cousins for the St. Patrick's day concert in Windsor. Safe travels.  I know you will do a great job in the movie.

I was at the Chicago show - and I just wanted to tell you that my husband got bad news about his job in an e-mail in the House of Blues restaurant RIGHT before the show.  Well you brought a smile to his face with your song about having A SMILE ON MY FACE AND FOUR WALLS AROUND ME...I gave him a hug and was grateful for your message imbedded in that song.  The three hours of positive energy that bloomed all during your performance was the best remedy for a heavy heart...ALL THE BEST - a loyal fan in Chicago - Juliette

Congrats to Alan and the whole band for a great 2008 and the news about Alan's big screen debut.

Alan - I am a new fan (about 1 year) to Great Big Sea. My first exposure to GBS was at the L.L. Bean concert in the summer of 2007. I truly wish you the best in your movie making and look forward to your return, just please do not ever stop playing the music that you play. GBS is now my favorite and I look forward to your next release and your next gig somewhere around Maine.

Good Luck

Hey Alan,

I wanted to add the 100th comment.  A quick scan through your previous FTR entries reveals that this is far more comments than you've ever gotten before.

And, with just cause.  This is exciting news!

I don't know what there is for me to say that hasn't already been said.  So I'll just add another congratulations.  Have fun.

I'm sure you'll be amazing on the big screen, but, as astounding as you'll surely be, don't even think about moving to L.A. and abandonding Newfoundland and Great Big Sea!  What you, Bob, and Sean bring to the world in terms of music is worth more than anything that can be measured.  The loss of that music (for Newfoundland and for the world) would be way greater than the loss of an amazing Newfie movie star.

I hope you won't miss the Prince too much.

Steph

Hello Alan ~
Woo Hoo! ... Good on You !... and  Happy Days !

Wow...all those prayers for blessings to you and the By's are paying off in such wonderful way for new opportunities.  Sure you will be fantastic and will enjoy the experience to it's fullest...and such great company. Such great teachers Grasshopper...but you have are now building a nice collection of movie experience... take that Bo Derrik -- or should that be Bo Who ? Acting, scoring movies, and being in the best damn band on the planet ... WOW!

Well, we will all be jealous of you being paid to have fun with bows and arrows and hanging out with Russell Crowe.  But really, isn't he the lucky one !

This will be a touch long and intense, but pardon me.  The night I read you current blog, was very serendipitous.  Went to library, had to wait a few moments so browsed movies. Picked up Russell's A Good Year - read your great news...and saw the movie in my hand was directed by Ridley Scott- who will be your director.  Sauntered home with a grand smile for your good fortune.  Watched the movie, but not before falling asleep twice.  End of that movie has alot of french-such a beautiful language. Knew Russell would have had a language coach on the movie - but a thought crossed my mind - how wonderful and helpful it is to share languages with those fluent. That thought occurred- movie ended and went to special features at end of movie- There was Testify...sounded familiar- clicked it an a moment after I had the though -wonder if Russell and Alan were conversing back and forth in French- boom, there you were, the second smiling face on that video.  Blew me away at 3am you did!!!

Well, if you ever feel additional thought would be appropriate to share with Russell, please delivery - Please thank him so very much for all his talent and creativity he put into his role of John Nash in A Beautiful Mind - a childhood friend of my brothers developed paranoid schizophrenia in his very late teens.  He was such a great guy and quite a gentleman.  It was so hard to watch that take over his life!  He ended up committing suicide by throwing himself infront of a car on a highway.  It was so sad. Russell portrayed John Nash with such heart.  It allowed so many to see so clearly how horrible that is to suffer with and what a wonderful person was burried so deeply within the disease.  He could never know how much that meant to me.

Well, on a lighter note, HAVE A BLAST !  We all want to hear all the great fun!

Hugs & God Bless : )    ~  Brenda

Dang, I waited WAY too long to check out the new FTR!!
First thing I want to say is that it tickles me pink that you posted this literally DAYS after I posted a message on the OKP - while on Spring Break in Florida - regarding my desire to see Bob on horseback.  As an equestrian student (Equine Facility Management major), it also tickles me to know that you're learning to ride... what I wouldn't give to sit in on those lessons!  *seriously, you have no idea!!!!*

Oh, dear.  I appear to be radiating waves of jealousy.  Horseback riding, sword fighting, archery (which I've always wanted to learn but never had the chance), Medieval revelry, dress, sets, talk... a well-funded Medieval Festival, featuring Alan Doyle... *sigh*

I sincerely hope that I dream about this tonight.

I don't suppose you need an experienced stablehand around to help with the horses...?  That is what I'm going to school for, after all...
*nudge nudge*

Ditto Steph(#100)!

Don't EVER let the music DIE... that would be The End of the World as we (GBS fans) know It ... and NO One would be feeling FINE  !!!! The beauty of what you all bring into the world with it is totally immeasurable.

Yes, DON'T LET THEM CUT YOUR HAIR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Yes,  OoooLAla on the tights too : )   : )  : )

When is the opening and when will the DVD be out  ???
And yes... hours and hours and hours of filming on the GBS DVD

Did you know you are even mentioned in Russell's Wikapedia bio - under music, the picture of him in that section is when he flew over to do the Bar Music gig with you on the Rock : ) !
My first thought the first time I really watched your 1st live DVD was - Hmm he looks like Russel Crowe, maybe like a brother,  but BETTER : )
We will be praying for The Fair One & The Prince to come safely across the Pond for some non-skype time !
And, regarding "Going Hollywood"...we would ALLLLL PUMMELL IT OUT OF YOU Mate ... Remember you are THE Newfie Boy !!!!!!

BRAKE A LEG Indeed : )

Every year I have list of "must-see" movies, and Robin Hood has now been added.  You're gonna love filming Alan.  I was an extra in a movie years ago and even such a small dinky role like THAT was fun, so you're going to have a grand time being a cast member!

Don't forget to get yourself onto www.imdb.com!

Cheers!  Sheree
