Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - October 30, 2008 - South Orange, New Jersey (On the Bus)

So far South Orange reminds me of one of those dandy English Commuter towns where people ride the train for a half hour or so to and from the big city each day.  Had breakfast right around the corner form the gig, which actually sits right under the Train Station, just like I remember in many towns just outside the city, limits of Greater London.  Perpendicular to the Railway Line, a Main Street (High Street in Britain) runs up a gentle slope and is bordered by small shops like Deli’s, Shoe Repair, Jewelers, and the like.  From first glance, it seems South Orange has bucked the normal North American trends and kept its little downtown intact and I actually see evidence that folks here use the train.  Very positive first impressions.

Today is Thursday, I believe, which means four more shows till we go home.  This leg has been quite successful and all hands are in good spirits, but the cumulative effect of the road two thirds of the time since August are starting to show on the faces around me in the front lounge this morning.  Part of the problem is we’ve come North over night and all hands would rather veg in the front of the bus than put on an extra layer and face the fact that the Fall is all but over up here and Winter is all but upon us.

Not so for McCann, he’s brought running gear for all weather, and he knows that I’ve got some all weather stuff too.  Shite, should not have had such a big breakfast.  Any moment now he’ll say something like, “C’mon Doyle, I saw a dandy park on the way in.”, or something like that and I’ll have to chase him through the woods and folks backyards for the next forty-five minutes.  I would not worry so much except for the alarming fact that dogs often chase us and McCann is much faster than me.  I fear I’ll be the one getting a tetanus shot and stitches later today.

Reminds me of when Sean, my Tri-Athlete buddy Pete, and me went hiking on a day off in Banff.  Pete, the local warned us of the bears and how they could be quite quick on their feet.  I asked if Pete was worried about outrunning a bear, he answered,

“I don’t need to outrun the bear Al, I just need to out run you.”

Cheers,
Alan

Hey Alan.  I only discovered this blog a couple of days ago.  My wife and I drove up from South Florida to see your show at the Variety playhouse in Atlanta, and what a wonderful show it was.  You guys really put effort in to pleasing the audience.  It was well worth the trip!  Hope you can outrun the dogs!

Going to the Flynn tomorrow, can't wait to see you guys!  It's good if you're prepared for all weather running, 'cause we've already had snow.  It's melting now, but.... Maybe just skip the run and have coffee? (with maple syrup in it, of course)

Try sprinkling some chili powder in his shorts. That may slow him down (just make sure he showers before the show or it could really become unpleasant on the stage).

Alan, you need to necruit a third member of the great big running team. Make sure it's somebody you can run a little faster than. Let the dogs (and the bears) nip new member's heels while McCann runs ahead into God knows what. You'll be safe and sound in the middle. You can have as much for breakfast as you want whenever you want.

Good shows and safe travels!

Hi Guys,
We saw you guys in South Orange last night.  It was a treat to see a Canadian Band play.  Who knew you guys were so funny?

It was an especially special evening for me because the Performing Arts Center you played at was one of the first projects that I got to design after graduating from engineering school in Calgary.

Your music was excellent. I am not sure how you sing night after night and not lose your voices.  The stage set up especially the lights were fantastic.

Thanks for making the experience so very special.

Good luck and thanks for driving out to middle of nowhere (Oranges)!

I agree with Nadia - the show last night was OUTSTANDING!!!!

Got to see the boys afterwards while we were having a beer and a bite at Cryans.  Too bad they were only paying punk disco music - 'tis a shame when a proper Irish bar stoops to that level.

Hey Alan,
What about running through the grounds of a "Private" GIRLS ONLY High School in Raleigh NC (St. Mary's).
I brought my wife and daughter to see the GBS on Wed Night in NC and we all loved it (1st time for them)...  This is the next best thing to being in Newfoundland.
We are counting down the months and days until next year `when you get with-in 500 miles of home.  And then there is always my wife and daughters 1st trip to Newfoundland next year.
See Ya

SEEING GREAT BIG SEA FOR THE FIRST TIME=PRICELESS
My son says that it was just incredible to see you guys live!
Hey Bob, thanks for letting him get a picture with you before the show...and Alan, thanks for giving him a playlist from the show! I know that you guys meet a ton of people, from all over, but you made my son's world light up for being so gracious. We would drive that trip from Florida (originally from Fortune, NFLD) a hundred times to see you!!! Thank you so much, for always giving so much to your fans. How lucky are we.....

Alan,

Fantastic show in Raleigh!  That is the first time I had the pleasure of seeing the band live, and it was an unforgettable night.  Brought me back to my summers in the Trinity Bight where my family is from.

I especially love the medley of tunes you play at the start of the sceond set.  I recognized Harbour Buffet Double, The Irist Washerwoman and of course I'se The B'y, but I cannot place the first piece that you play in that set, and no one on the boards here seems to know it either.  Would you be able to let us know?  I'd love to learn how to play it someday.

Cheers to you all for an unforgettable night!

My husband and I saw your show last night in Portland, our 8th time seeing you guys play.  You never cease to amaze us with your talents.  The highlight, though, was meeting Alan afterward at the Grill. How lucky we are to have been able to thank you in person for your music!  Have fun in Lebanon tonight!

Like Jessica, my husband and I saw you in Portland the other night. We had such a blast! You guys never cease to deliver. Would like to have met you all, but the long trek home and two young boys who like to get up at 5:30 (that's a.m.) meant taking off just for survival! I did miss hearing "Gallows Pole." I thought that was on the play list for this tour? Ah well. Maybe it'll show up on a live album. ;-)

You pegged South Orange accurately.  (I used to live in the Garden State and train in to Manhattan to work)  Hope you enjoyed dining at a genuine Jersey diner.

Just discovered this band thanks to my daughter.  Wow, wow wow!  Where have you been all my life?

LOOOOVE! the newest album

I am actually very sad as the tour date for Kitchener Ontario comes closer. Since first hearing about the concert we had planned to make it a family event and take my brother in law, Christopher, (and amazing gaggle of supporters) to the concert. He was diagnosed in May 2008 as having cancer and is finishing his last round of chemo before heading to radiation. Unfortunately, since he is a truck driver, he has also been unable to work. He is a HUGE Great Big Sea fan and first introduced me to GBS 14 years ago. (I do like you guys much better than the Newfie fies and potted meat!) The love for the music comes from the easterner in him - he is a totally lovable re-allocated Newf! His Dad still lives in "Paradise", literally!  With the state of his immune system he is unable to attend the concert - Last night we watched a live concert on tv - not quite the same - yet always a great time. We'll be thinking of you on Nov.20!

A very long time, no see.  I am still your biggest fans even though I have been living in the States for the last 13 years.  Do you guys ever come to Portland, Oregon.  I am in Washington State (Camas) about 15 minutes from the PDX airport.

Say hi to Sean for me.  Hope to see you soon.
