Tour Diary - October 6, 2008 - San Luis Obispo (On the Bus)

Currently parked in front of the hotel in downtown San Luis Obispo.  Slept in as late as I possibly could, as last night was our only chance on this tour to sleep in an honest to God bed.  I’ve been fighting the flu since the start of this run and I may have knocked it with this morning’s leisurely rise at 11:30.  It’s been a while since I’ve slept that late, and I confess that I really enjoyed it.

There are those adults who lose their teenage ability to sleep for longer than 7-8 hours in a row.  There are dudes on this bus who wake at 6am; no matter what time they may have burned the midnight oil.  Thankfully, I can still pretty much sleep on a clothesline for as long as is available to me.

Grand gig last night followed by a trip to the pub for sociables.  Thanks to all the kind folks who chatted and offered liquid joy and for keeping me out and entertained.  More thanks to the kind folks who had sense to send me home to the hotel for the much-needed kip.  I am better for your sober judgment.

So far, this day is going as it should.  I had some light food, a big walk about the Cali/Mexican style downtown, and am currently making use of the hotel’s laundry facility to freshen up the wardrobe.

How about Kris and Murray’s solo pieces in the previous two concerts?  Talk about raising the bar. Holy Jumpins.  How do we follow that?  What an odd position to find myself in.  I feel cheap singing my own songs following the cool and obscure covers of Richard Thomson and Bob Dylan respectively.  We’ve just instated a “No Repeat” rule, by the way so we have to learn something new each time your turn comes around.   Very cool that that solo slot in the show has done just what I had hoped.  It has made each concert unique, and guarantees that something special happens at every stop on the tour.

Just dashed off to take the clothes out of the washer and dump it into the dryer.  Miracle of miracles; I remembered to not put my good shirts in the dryer!  Holy frig, a good nights sleep can do wonders.

Must go find some good food for the evening meal.  Might be the last meal eaten with a fork for a few days so, lets make it count.

Bus rolls to Tucson tonight.

Rock On.

Cheers
A

The addition of the solo spot was definitely a good idea and is something, I'm sure everyone looks forward to at every concert. Not just who's turn is it but, What on earth is he going to come up with tonight?

Still hoping for a slot for a GBS song that has fallen by the wayside...

Alan,

It nice to hear the concert reports and read the reviews in the media. Seems like this tour is going along pretty well despite passing viruses around. The solo spots are a great idea! I only saw one (Séan's 59th St. Bridge Song in NYC) and really enjoyed it. Can't wait to see you guys in South Orange. Nice to hear the solos will be different each show. Feel better.

Thank you very much for the solo feature on this tour. I greatly enjoyed getting "Tickle Cove Pond" at our show in Seattle, and I've been having fun hearing from other fans what solos they've been getting on their shows!

Consider this a vote to keep this as a feature on future tours. I'd love to see what Kris or Murray or especially Bob would do with a solo. Talk about an argument for attending multiple shows. ;)

I have to second Anna's vote to keep this on future tours.  You'd likely find an even bigger crowd just following you all from place to place in a given area.  That being said, don't feel too bad singing your own songs--"Let It Go" when you were in Indianapolis rocked!  Went right out and got it on CD afterwards!

The solos were awesome!  Murray's at the Lobero in Santa Barbara was especially impressive.

Thanks for giving us such fantastic shows in LA and SB.  Even though the crowd was small in SB, your energy was awesome and it was truly one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I never would have guessed you were fighting the flu from the way you were running all over stage - joking with the other guys and interacting with us.  Thanks to all of you for always giving 100%.

Now I'm really counting down until the cruise!

I'm glad that the South-Central Coast of CA treated you so well, despite the rain in SB. Please, please come back when next on tour. The concert in SB really was wonderful, and like CelticLark said, it wasn't apparent at all that you were ill. I hope your health continues to improve while touring.

Nice to hear about the solos, Alan! Wish I'd get to see them. ^_^

Any chance you'll be steering the heading of that bus of yours towards Belleville again any time soon? :P

With Mccann trying to quit drinking alltogether would it be the end of the frakin world for you to put a cork in it for a few weeks when your on tour?  Does he need to hear you yakking about how drunk you got?  If you can't do it as a friend can you do it out of total selfishness to keep your band going with all the members still alive?  If YOU can't go a few weeks on tour w/o the boozing maybe Mccann isn't the only one who needs a lifestyle change!

Allison - Well, that was passionate! Good to get the blood pumping it's it? Yanno, I was just thinking...I'll bet that could be more effectively communicated face-to-face.

Maybe the next time you run into Alan or Sean while they're on tour and signing CDs, chatting to fans, or taking photos at our request you'll have your chance to tell them how to be better friends, less selfish, more supportive, that sort of thing.

Of course there's still the question of the other eight guys on the bus, but I've heard they never touch a drop of the stuff.

Cheers, Tina

Alan,
The solo rotation is a great idea, and I just loved the solo you did in Denver on Thursday night.  That certainly did make the stop here special.
I had been listening to "How Did We Get From Saying I Love You" repetedly about a week or so ago, so it was somehow ironic to me that you chose it for our show!  I like the idea of "bridge" instead of "street" - and the metaphor for being between two places both physically and emotionally.
I also really enjoyed they way you guys opened the second set with the instrumentals - very nice!
Thanks for making it such a great night for my family's first show.

Sorry to not see a FTR from Hollyweird - terrific show!!  Was quite the addition, having Russell Crowe show up for a few. Made up for us not having a Murray or Kris solo.

Glad to see the lads, look forward to next time - and looking forward to seeing your friends Gaelic Storm next weekend!

I'm with Diane...I guess having Russell on stage made up for not having a Murray or Kris solo.  Now I'm looking for another venue to hear not only the solo but also "Straight To Hell".  I heard that I could expect it during the encore.

I wish you guys only the best on tour and hope to see at least one more show before it is over!!
