Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - September 30, 2008 - AC Flight 105 (YYZ-YVR)

How’s this for a lovely photo of Molly with the Historic St. John’s Harbour in the background?

Now, I know what you’re thinking.

‘Doyle may have lost it and is posting pics of his dog on the Internet.  All politeness aside, this family pic has no place in this forum and Doyle is obviously drinking in the daytime as he types his Blogs.’

I don’t blame you one bit, Dear Reader, for making this assumption, but as it turns out, I am perfectly lucid and would love to explain the seemingly inappropriate, domestic, out of character, shot that sits above.

Molly is a Regal Beast and deserves a photo shoot any time if you asked me.  Likewise the skyline of Old St. John’s with the sunshine pushing the clouds back out to sea is worthy of a snapshot.  However, the focus in this timely piece of photojournalism is neither the Dog of Dogs nor the City of Cities, but the massive cruise ship that dwarfs many of the 100-year-old buildings in the downtown core.

Now, I know what you’re thinking.

‘Doyle has definitely lost it if he thinks we are interested in random tourist shots of cruise ships.  Dear Alan, I think we are all quite aware what a cruise ship looks like and we’ve seen lost of postcard shots of the city that you go on and on about.  Before you post anymore ‘enlightening’ images, please know that we’ve all seen airplanes land and have rode on the escalator at the Mall.’

That’s what I would think if I were you, anyway.

But this is no random boat.  This is the Norwegian Jewel, and if my research proves correct, this is the venue for Ships and Dips in February.  This is the craft that will ferry many of us to bliss and joy on the Caribbean Seas in the New Year’s dead of Winter.  Just thought it was cool to see it at home.

Made me hope for a grand time come 2009.

Did a cool interview in Manhattan with a website called Do Something.  We spoke mostly about Daffodil Place, and mine and the bands effort to put something back into the community that gave us so much.  Check it out.

Hope it raises more awareness about the cause.

Currently sitting in 12D about one quarter of the way from Toronto to Vancouver.  Already flew from St. John’s to Toronto, but have no memory of the journey.  I know I got up and showered at 5AM, and got a Taxi to the airport.  I can recall nothing of the boarding process or flight.  Sleeping on planes is a Godsend.

I hope this long flight across this vast land affords more of the same.

Really enjoyed the few days home, I must say. Looking forward to a few gigs in the West.  Hitting a few new spots is always a traveler’s treat.  Never been to Albuquerque or San Luis Obispo, I don’t think.  It’s always good to see old friends in Seattle, San Fran, and Denver.  An inner tube ride in Boise is a must.  One could even hope for a star sighting or two in Hollywood.

Much to hope for, isn’t there?

Cheers,
Alan

Have to admit... before reading your entry, after noticing the pup, & the sky, I was oogling the cruise ship... for a good reason...

It seems that in my new island home of Louisbourg, cruise ship watching is like bird watching. Ships draw a crowd & get the local folk talking. My landlord, who also runs the local laundromat / grocery store keeps a pair of binoculars next to the cash register along with pen & paper to record the ships as they come through. This weekend, owing to high winds that passed through with Kyle, a ship got caught in the harbour for about a day & a half & they had to bus the passengers to Halifax to catch their flights home... Absolute Craziness in such a Small Town.

Sadly I'm not going to make it out on Ships & Dip... sad because I'd be celebrating my 30th Birthday that week :(

I read about the ship in the paper...a really moving story about a man from UK who came back to St John's aboard the NJ and found the grave of a man he tried to save on another ship 54 years ago.

Not a run of the mill interview you had...really enjoyed reading it. I've been a fan of Do Something for a long time...done some stuff with them over the years...congrats on DH almost reaching its milestone

had to laugh at "cult-like fans" description and since I was at the Nokia show...if the show fits:)

Wow that ship dwarfs the harbour! When I was there The Turmoil was in the harbour and I thought that was a huge ship. Still would love to see that whale watching schooner that was in Petty Harbour back in St. John's. Have a great time out West. Don't miss the Chilis in Albuquerque!

WooHOO! Can't wait for the cruise but that thing looks like a monster! I can't even begin to imagine how a ship that size navigates it's way through the narrows. YEESH!

Alan, a couple of places to visit...

In SLO, try Tio Albertos for one of the largest burritos you will ever have. Really good. Or, if pizza is more your thing, you have to try Woodstocks. The best in California, IMHO.

Looking forward to seeing you at the HOB in LA.

AHhhhhh, yes.  Bliss and Joy in the Dead of Winter.
I am so looking forward to that. I had no idea how big the Norwegian Jewel is - it is a veritable island!  I haven't been on a cruise liner since the Queen Mary brought me to the States in '67 (except a re-visit to HMS QM in Long Beach in the 90's) She is no small vessel and the NJ appears to dwarf her!

I wonder which is bigger, the private island we're stopping at, or the boat?

Thanks for posting the picture.  Both foreground and background are lovely.  BTW, a litle girl in my Kindergarten class told me today about her dog, "Molly".  I told her in return, "I know someone who has a dog named Molly too".  She giggled and was clearly delighted with that fact tha there was another "Molly-dog" out there.

The show in Seattle should be kicking off any moment now...I hope all in attendance, Gents and Ladies, Minstrels and their Tunes have a great night!

At the risk of piping up way too often, (I am what I am! Hahaha, who friggen cares!) that was a GREAT set of articles at Do Something.

Cool to finally read an interview where the interviewer had something new to ask. Chuckled inwardly at the round-about-promo-bent answer to how you all met originally. Nicely done! We are now finally convinced we must get to St. John's, hahaha, but first the cruise...and maybe another show in between.

Thanks again. Cheers! :D

Great Picture.  I first noticed Molly, being a dog owner myself.  Next I noticed how beautiful the harbor looked behind Molly and though again about how someday I want to visit Newfoundland, then I thought "Holy Moly, what's that huge ship there?"  How cool that it's the Jewel!  Can't wait to see you all on the cruise.  If it turns out to be half the fun that Ships & Dips III was, it will be a grand time indeed!

Thanks for posting the pic!

Less than 125 days until we board that beauty!

Wish I could get up to SLO to see you all there but it's too far for a Sunday night.  I'll have to content myself with HOB tomorrow night and Santa Barbara on Saturday.  SLO is a great college town.  You'll have a blast there.  See you tomorrow night!  :)

Molly looks adorable and engaging. The ship looks bloated and a little ridiculous.  With bliss and joy like that, you won't have to go to the Lower Deck to feel fulfilled this year.

Absolutely always keep your eyes open for a star sighting in Hollywood. You never know who might turn up where.

Safe travels.

OH...The photo really makes me miss Newfoundland!  I think we stood very near that same spot and gazed at the harbor on our first visit to the Rock.  It was great to see you in Seattle last night - what a wonderful show!  Happy touring, and hope to see you again, maybe in Vancouver??

I think I can pretty safely say that we all love it when you post pictures in the FTR. To me, it really provides a window into places and experiences that I won't necessarily get to have, and I find that fascinating. The witty commentary that typically accompanies said photos is always appreciated as well. Molly certainly is a beauty, and St. John's is a wonderful place. See you on the cruise!

Lydia, you're obviously new around these parts since you just discovered their music.

A little tutorial...

1) The band's private life is just that.. private.  Eventually little snippets of detail come out, but pretty much everyone here respects their right to keep certain details to themselves.

2) GBS just played Indianapolis a few weeks ago.  Sorry you missed it.

I just got home a bit ago from your Santa Barbara concert. As SB is my home, I hope that you enjoyed your brief time here as much as you said you did. :) Your concert was amazing and I'm so grateful for all you give us fans.

I do have a regret about tonight; you were out in front of the theater looking at some posters, drinking coffee, when my husband and I were getting our tickets at the box office around 6pm. I wasn't entirely sure it was you and didn't want to seem like a freak by asking if you were you. I wish I had said hello and thanked you for how your music so regularly cheers me and helps me get through my work days - desk job, ugh.

Thank you, a million times, for your music, and thanks for signing the 5 of spades that Murray brought in to the bus on my behalf after the show. Hope it wasn't too much of a bother. Have fun in SLO!

(I'm new to the site and your blog, so I hope this isn't an inappropriate place to leave my thanks.)

I was just watching the Fortune's Favor special on CMT and thought I would look GBS up on the net, and voila' I found this site!!! I love your blog Allan, you've a lively wit, it's obvious! I have a dream to see you all in cabaret sometime, and maybe I will someday. In the meantime, I am looking forward to more uplifting, toe tapping, bopping and hopping east coast sound from you!
I will definitely check back here soon, take care,
btw, nice dog!

You know, all those West coast towns, and I notice a tidy circle with a 500 mile radius going right round the city of Reno. Poor Reno. Soon, though, I'll be on the high seas on that very ship. I can't wait!

Lovely photo of Molly and St. John's Harbour.  Loved the show in Seattle.  It was fantastic!

Have to admit...I didn't really know the band until Ships and Dip III.  Then I was constantly in front of the stage after hearing one set, I was hooked.  You 'n the boyz keep me company on my Ipod at work, making the tediousness endurable with your lovely music, songs and humor.  Seems as if my 'song shuffle' lands on GBS a lot! :-)

Did you and the rest of the boys get the Flying Salmon Stout we sent back stage?

Take care, can't wait to see you guys again!

Wow!!! Looks absolutely beautiful, thank you. Some day we hope to get there, maybe on retirement. We are land lubbers by birth but love lobster and the like.

Looking forward to you coming to Edmonton. We missed you a couple of years ago due to family obligations. Much dissapointment.

I must say my husband, Murray, is one of your hugest fans. It's not unusal for us to have company from out of town and all of a sudden have GBS blasting on the surround sound!! He puts in on even when no one is watching and of course cranks it!! To hear you guys accpella is absolutely mind numbing.

He is psyched to see you guys. I know he is going to drive me nuts with the anticipation of your performance. He is watching the CMT special right now and trying to adjust to Sean's voice to sing along!!! "Go Bob go"...the background comment as I type this.
Hopefully I will able to get Orchestra seating or something very close.
Thanks so much for creating music that can stop a fight in a split second!!!

Hey Alan:

Hi Alan:

First of all thank you for the margaritas!!  It was so much fun hanging out with you guys. Rachel and I were talking and since the likelihood of GBS coming in concert anywhere near where we live in the next few yesrs is so remote that we were actually toying with the idea of driving to Denver tomorrow (today) to see GBS again.  Any likelyhood of getting tickets? e-mail hit a snag.
