Tour Diary - September 13, 2008 - Chicago, IL (On the Bus)

Sitting on the bus waiting for a serious rainstorm to pass.  I’ve been sitting in dirty exercise clothes waiting for a break in the downpour to go for a jog around the town.  I’ve been doing this for almost two hours.  I’m just about to give it up, get a shower and go eat a hot dog.

Great location for the new GBS, Newfoundland Labrador Bus here on the main entrance to the Festival site.  Many folks taking photos of the icebergs and whales and Gros Mourne images on the 45-foot panels that line the bus.  JP, our Super Driver, has fielded dozens of inquiries about the bus and more importantly about the Province.  This morning at a truck stop in Rural Illinois, JP tells me, a driver from a Moving Company begged to get on the bus as he was originally from the Rock and wanted to say Hi. Only a few moments ago a lady with a heavy Spanish brogue asked if this NewFinland was a new place.  It looks like a movie set, she decided.  That iceberg can’t be real!

The tour is off to a good start, I figure.  London rocked, as did Ann Arbor, and Madison.   Played to one of the most enthusiastic crowds ever in Minneapolis last night.  Sean’s family delivered the most amazing Enchiladas I’ve ever tasted and he and I did a cool cameo o a local afternoon TV show.  Big day in a city that I just love, love, love.

Read some good reviews online about the shows as well.  We’re doing many of the new tunes on the CD and dragging out a few rare oldies like Ferryland Sealer and Captain Wedderburn.  On some occasions, this means a few of the more commonly heard tunes like Mari Mac or Boston and St John’s has to get cut, but what can you do.  I s’pose it’s all part of being a band with over a hundred recorded tunes to pick from.  We’re having a blast.  Hope you are, too.

Still raining…heavier actually.  That’s it.  Shag it.  I should get some exercise credits for having sat here all this time.  Off to the Fish and Chips shop.

Rock On.

Cheers,
Alan

I think everyone is enjoying the dusting off of Ferryland Sealer, Cap't Wedderburn, & Little Beggarman. It might be an idea to generally save a spot on the lineup for songs that haven't been played in a long time (or were never played much to being with). After 15 years you have many songs that have fallen by the wayside to choose from and it makes for a fun surprise for us (though more housework for you). Even if rusty, it's always appreciated :)

As a willing participant in Saturday evening's drenching, I just wanted to say "Thank You!" for taking the stage and putting on such a fabulous and fun performance.  Many of us would have understood cancelling the performance - would have been disappointed, but most definitely would have understood.  Instead, it was an evening that I will likely never forget.

Thanks again!

Safe travels...

Thanks for the great show in Chicago.  Got my son hooked on your music too, and the two of us had been looking forward to seeing your performance for months!  Next time, we can do without the "special effects," though.  :D

So glad you guys are having a blast.  Saw you in Ann Arbor (and Toronto and Akron) and I can tell you that your fans are having a blast as well!  I also wanted to thank you for talking to us for so long prior to the Ann Arbor show (while you were drinking your cup of coffee).  It's those type of gestures that really make you guys the best.  Best of luck on the rest of the tour.  Wish I could make more shows.  See you on the cruise!  :)  Lisa

As another who sat in the rain Saturday, I'd like to echo the thanks for going out in the rain.  Once you guys got into the show I wouldn't have noticed the rain.

Loved you in Indianapolis as well--thanks for changing the set list so those of us at both concerts got to hear new things. Dusting off some of the old favorites like Berry Picking Time & Process Man made my night, I never thought I'd hear them live.

Did you ever find the "one" pub in Chicago?  ;) You still owe us that pint!

If I didn't have 4 kids and a great hubby, I would leave Mi and follow you like a good groupie would. I have already booked a room in Chicago for the March show........Will purchase 2, two day passes tomorrow on the pre-sale site :0) That should hold me over for a couple of years.........Maybe :0)    Much love while rockin.... Hah, don't mention the rain. You might jinx it! Just be thankful you weren't on The Rock for hurricane Ike! (at least, I don't think you were.)... heard it was real brutal!

I had to walk through the super-duper winds and drizzle for coffee today. Can't go to school without coffee, y'know? No rain, no sleet, no hail, no... hurricane winds... Ah, caffeine.

Congrats on the great shows and yum, enchiladas.

I am just writing to give a special thanks to Alan and Murray who are, in my opinion, two of the coolest, classiest guys around.

My friends and I had an absolute blast Saturday night in Chicago.  The soggy concert was, as always, fabulous.  The energy the entire group has is amazing, and I must say yours is the best live show I have every seen.  However, running into the two of you later was the best part, though.  Those mojitos were great (yes, I did drink all of mine . . . even though you offered me $6,000 for it, Alan . . . ).  My apologies for the use of parenthesis.  I'll find a good margarita place to recommend for the next time the group is in town.

Your willingness to "hang" with the fans is such a testament to the both of you.  Thanks for being so down to earth.  The discussions about Chicago architecture, the mafia, politics, Alan's "internal monologue," song lyrics (we promise . . . not creepy at all), and, yes, even superfluous punctuation were great.  My friends and I, by the way, are trying to track down that book about the typing fly.  I'm not sure if I ever laughed so hard or smiled so much.  Oh, and Murray, I think you have inspired me to revolt . . . I just have to think of something to get arrested for.  ;)  The impromptu jam session with the Nova Scotians was the icing on the cake.  Those folks are incredibly talented.

I cannot say enough how great the evening was.  I do not know if we would ever get to thank you in person, so . . . "Thanks."  Our trio may come across as reserved, but we had a great time.  How could two guys be so fun and funny yet gentlemen at the same time?  We have the utmost respect for you two.

Respectfully,
Sam Chapleau (writing on behalf of myself, Jen and Julie Nelson)

Congratulations on your latest CD success.  I listen to it faithfully, actually that's all that is in my CD player....all GBS.  I have outside speakers, so whoever is passing by or in the yard, are entertained.  Hopefully, I will get to see the band before year's end.  As I said before, I'm a health careworker, working shifts, and missed the show in Gander.

Anyway, congrats and keep up the excellent work.

You are to be commended for not cancelling
BTW, the 2 groups on Sun. night did!  So you guys
saved Chicago Celtic Fest this year!
I wish I knew what pub you ended up at, I'd have
bought YOU a pint!!

I hope to see you in March at HOB!  God Bless and
I hope you have dried off by now.

Hello Alan

Thank you for the great show at Ann Arbor.  It was my first ever GBS concert & being 7 rows back was just awesome!  I just heard that you winked at my niece (her and my son were leaning against the wall just left of the stage) and she thought it was cool and creepy.  She's 14, what can you say?  I think my kidlets saw a new crazier side of mom that night but they know mom still likes to have fun.  I'm hoping that Windsor, ON is going to pop up for early 2009 so I can see you guys again!  Loved Gallow's Pole!  Thanks again from the 2z clan from Windsor, ON

I loved the music, the banter, the music, the comic relief, the Monty Python sticker (Here, fishy, fishy), the green alien and... did I mention the MUSIC?!  I wish I could have hung out at a pub with you guys and talked about your passion - when you first felt it stir inside your souls.  It's a beautiful thing to see you thoroughly enjoying yourselves and earning a living doing something you love.  I have one issue, however.  Why is a fine Canadian boy like you, Alan, not pronouncing dollar as dawloor?

Madison was fantastic! I dragged me poor ould parents along as I thought they could benefit from loud noises and a crush of people. They---and I---had a marvelous time.

All talk of caffeine, ice fishercows, grass, and GALACTICA much appreciated. And TY for "River Driver" (I'd harassed poor Sean via Twitter; I'm not Meaghan). Bummed I couldn't make it to Chicago after, but hopefully I'll get to see you guys again soon!

I'm thrilled to hear that you're incorporating some of the rarer stuff into your live shows!  With tickets for my 14th and 15th GBS shows in hand (so glad you'll be in Rochester in October, when it's pretty here, instead of the usual March, when it sucks), the idea of surprises on the set list is something to look forward to indeed.  Love Mari Mac et al, but after a dozen concerts and who knows how many reps on the live CDs, the "odd" stuff is more compelling.  A nice treat for your longtime fans.  Also LOVE the covers you've been doing--Bob so rocks on Good Girls Don't! Thanks for all the fun over the years...looking forward to much more!

Don't forget, fidgeting, thumb-twiddling and - of course - blog-typing are all excellent calorie burners. *flexes enormous fidgeting muscles*

Looking forward to the shows this fall so so SO much. Looking forward to them that much more that I know you guys might drag out some golden (platinum!) oldies.

(And if you can do anything about Ferryland Sealer getting played in NYC . . . it's my birthday, you know. And nothing says "happy birthday, random fan" like a song about clubbin' seals.)

Thanks for a fabulous show in Minneapolis.

And thanks so much for going on with the show in Chicago.  It ranks as one of the most fun shows I've ever been to of any band, and I really think the rain only added to it.  It was a show I will not soon forget.  I would love to know what all of us looked liked from the stage, other than completely rediculous :)

Hi Alan...
You are coming to Barrie very soon... I am a homeschooling mom of 3 boys that are absolutaly in love with you guys! We are trying to have tickets for the show. My boys are 13, 11 and 10. You are a pillar in our homeschool. Canada is (after all) very cool!!!
Thank you for your music... You gave my boys the interest for folklore music. I am from Quebec. I am scottish (french) descendant. Thank you for showing my boys that Canadian music can be cool. My boys are from Muskoka Port Severn. They are fishermen, nature lovers and found in your music a non-commercial way to appreciate Canadian music thought you DVD-CD that we bought and enjoy very much!!!  We love you guys!
Lots of our family are in music. Thank you for your effort to stick to the non-commercial side of our roots. Even if we don't get to see your show we will enjoy your music forever.
Sheer to our roots,
You seriously rock!
You  are an inspiration to our futur generation.
If my boys play music, you are their voices.
See you maybe someday.
