Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - September 5, 2008 - Home

H-man is napping which affords a moment to reflect on last weekend’s Halifax romp.

Man I love Halifax.  If I had never heard of St. John’s, I would have moved to Halifax from almost anywhere else in North America.  Perfect size, cool walks, tons of history, great music, dandy pubs and restaurants, piles of worldly people to meet, tons of students and sailors to give the place some youthful energy, and the Lower Deck.

I have fond memories of that place.  We played there for a week each month for a couple of years, but in my mind, it was all one big night.  For a Celtic band from Newfoundland, the Lower Deck is the biggest, most important gig in your career.   You need it to pay the massive expense of getting off the Rock and an anchor gig like the Deck can pay for a lot of cold introductory tours through Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario.

Gigging there can be addictive, which explains why many of the bands that played there with us a dozen years ago, are still there.  It’s a great gig.  I thought it was great because the pub was so good, but on Friday of last week as I stood on that stage for the first time in over a decade, I realized something, that had previously alluded me.  The Lower Deck is indeed a fine pub, but it is a spectacular music venue.  Every aspect of the place is set up to enhance the musical, not the pub, experience.  It’s all about the bands and music.  Can’t think of another pub in the world that is so focused on the entertainment as the Lower Deck.  Grand Spot.

I vote we do it every year.

Had a grand time at Keith Urban show as well.  Massive crowd showed up early enough to catch our set.  I think we went over fairly well in front of many folks who saw us for the first time.  Interesting to stand in front of the sea of Corona fake Cowboy hats. (C’mon, if you’re going to wear a Cowboy Hat don’t go for the free one you get with a six pack of Mexican beer, frig sakes).

Keith Urban is one of the best guitar players I’ve ever seen.  Johnny Reed rocked the house.  Gretchen Wilson can wail.  Not sure about the Journey into Heart note for note covers though.

Finished Saturday night as we’ve finished many in that town; in a pub with friends chatting and laughing and carrying on while drinking glasses of beer.

I Love Halifax

Cheers,
Alan

No place is like the Lower Deck. No praise is too high for it. Seriously.

Why limit yourself to every year? You could ask some of the bands who played there with you a dozen years ago and who're still playing there to let you sit in whenever you feel the urge for the unique Lower Deck musical experience. Tell Kris to talk to Paul about it. I bet he'd happily agree.

Really good to hear you think your Urban gig went over well. Lots of potential new fans at that one. Actually, it might be better if the only cowboy hat somebody has to wear to a C&W show is the free one they got with the Corona. I wonder about those who have to decide which of their ample collection of cowboy hats to wear.

I love Halifax too. It's a great city.

I love Halifax too.  In a way, I'm glad I wasn't born here, because I'm not sure I would fully appreciate how incredible a town it is.  That hill is killer tho!  My gams were killing me after walking all over downtown all weekend!

I second your vote to play, if not necessarily the Lower Deck, then at least SOMEWHERE in Halifax every year.  Maybe a coupla times a year?

Thanks, BTW, for the Lower Deck show.  It was...well, words fail.  It was amazing.

I am not a country fan, so I expected sitting through several country acts would set my teeth on edge.  But I didn't.  I actually found something to enjoy about every act I saw. (Admittedly, we bailed after your set, too hot, too squished, too fat and too old to endure being packing in like sardines for one more second, and besides, I thought we'd let some Keith Urban fans have our real estate) I admit I pondered buying a "sharn green" cowboy hat for the occasion, but in the end, too scottish to spend the money for a hat I'd never wear again!  In retrospect, tho, I'd have stood out from the sea of Corona hats! lol!

See you at the Lower Deck next year!

You guys were great at Keith's show and now my BF says he's gonna buy your new CD. I think Halifax is the best city in the whole world but I'm kinda partial. Halifax loves GBS too.

I don't know if you're teasing us, but please consider another gig at the Lower Deck if not annually then occasionally. It was simply outstanding. :)

I wish I had been there at the Lower Deck to see and hear you. It is my all time favorite spot.  I have had so much fun there with my friends.  Hope to see you on Sept. 20th in Alton, NY, can't wait.  My b-day present to myself.

Keith Urban is my *other* favorite Australian guitarist. My original favorite Australian guitarist is Tommy Emmanuel, CGP.

Would have loved to been there, but lovely to hear that y'all had a fine time.

peace.

The Lower Deck show was awesome!  You guys entertain like no other!!! We had to remain seated for the show though, which is very difficult for true fans, but hey, sitting in the front row did reap great benefits...the view, of course!  Can't wait for our next GBS "fix" - come back soon!!

Looking forward to tonight's show at the Western Fair. Saw you lads 2 years ago and it was great. Happened to be driving by the fairgrounds this afternoon and was happy to see the great big bus had made it safely. Had an added bonus of seeing Alan walking from the bus. Would have waved but it was to far. There is a special thrill to a candid moment like that. The rain is supposed to have passed and I hope it's a great show tonight.

You saw Alan walk from the bus in the split second you happened to drive by? What amazing timing. You ought to buy a lotto ticket today.

The bus is behind a fence, I take it?

Halifax is our favorite city as well - if we ever give up towns without streetlights that's where we'll be.

Just found out you will be passing an evening in our neck of the woods - hope to make it to your Keene show!

Caught the show at the Outerland on Martha's Vineyard while there on vacation, we had a great time and the smaller venue afforded us the luxury of getting right up to the stage.  Definitely the highlight of our summer!

Lajohnson you are in for a fine treat tonight if last night was any indication. The revuew in the paper today summed it up nicely with the headline "Great Big Love" The lads had the crowd on their feet all night and begging for more at the end. They sang lots of songs from the new CD as well as all our old faves. The only thing that would have made it better would be if it was alot longer. Thanks to all the lads. Can't wait for the next time.

To Pele
There is a large gate in the fence to allow the harness racers and big tour buses onto the track. They also bring in St John Ambulance vehicles during events at the fair.

Well said Allan! As an Ex-Pat Townie now habitating in Halifax, I concur that it is indeed a fantastic place to live. It is the right size, great restaurants, amazing pubs, and a culture that rivals Newfoundland in many ways.
I'm a long time GBS fan, even before GBS existed. From drinking to Old Brown's Daughter at many random kitchen parties in St.John's, through the Rankin Street days to many nights downstairs at Normies/Jungle Jim's with you guys up on a makeshift stage made out of tables. I think a night or two at Turkey Joe's might have been in there too, but way too foggy to remember. Then moved on to Halifax in Mid 90's and watched you guys many a weekend at the Lower Deck, The Graywood at DAL; Concert on the Hill. I even saw you guys by chance while on a business trip to either Philly or Cincinnati. (That one was a little foggy too!) And who can forget the annual trip home for Christmas and going to see GBS Christmas at the Raddisson. The gig at the deck last week I heard was amazing. Too bad Darrell wasn't back to share in the reunion as well.

Cheers,

Right on. I've been saying that since I moved there in 2002. People who've only known Halifax don't know how good they've got it.

Alan,
Im looking forward to seeing the band again in Boston! I was back home on the rock for your Gander show in August, it was amazing! No other band can get a crowd going, regardless of their age, like you guys! I'm currently living in Cambridge, MA going to school at Harvard University.  I'm the only Newfoundlander at Harvard, but I am quickly recruiting  my friends as 'Honorary Newfoundlanders'.  Many a Friday or Saturday night has been passed in the Harvard Dorms partying to GBS and other Newfoundland favorites with the flag proudly pinned above the fireplace! Can't wait to see you guys next month...rest assured I will be coming wearing my Newfoundland Pride proudly on my sleeve!

Cheers from Harvard,
Laura

I love the lads, too, but am frustrated that guys who have degrees in English mess up the written language so often...
For example, in this FTR "alluded" is used for "eluded." I know I'll be flamed for this posting, but c'mon, Alan!
