Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - August 15, 2008 - AC Flight 1197 (YYT-YYZ)

Off we go again. Bit of a crazy week ahead, but I am very glad to have the chance to play a few concerts in a row. Feels like it’s been a while since we did more than a weekend.

What lies ahead looks something like this. We fly to Toronto and jump on the Bus where, hopefully, Kris and Murray and the crew will be waiting for us. We roll to the border and head into Buffalo for tonight’s gig.

Late night tonight we roll to Akron. Have we ever played Akron? Have I ever been to Akron? I know we’ve played Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Dayton. We also spent a day off in the parking lot of a Hojo (Howard Johnson Hotel for the un-jaded travelers amongst us) in Medina. I think, but cannot confirm that we stopped for gas in Toledo once as well. That’s six cities I’ve visited in the State of Ohio. I wonder if I’ve been to as many destinations in any other State?

Anyway, late Saturday night we head to the Philly Folk Festival to headline one of the most prestigious Music Events in the US. Big gig. Early Monday morning we nip over to the University in Philly to record a radio show called World Café, I think. We played this show a number of years back and all I can recall is humping our gear up four flights of stairs to this wee closet of a room where the hosts did a great show with few resources. Thankfully, the show has moved into a real ground level studio and the crew will not mutiny when it comes time to load in.

Its gets a little hairy at this point.

Following the morning taping of the show, the whole party has a day off in Philly and then roll to the morning Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. That is the whole party except me and Sean. We dash to the airport and fly to Manchester, NH and catch a car to Durham, NH. Is there a good pub in Durham, I wonder? We sleep in a Durham Hotel and rise in the AM and go directly to the New Hampshire PBS TV Station to record some interviews for a potential upcoming release. (More about that in days and weeks to come.) Following the interviews, we are to be driven to Boston Airport where we’ll board what I imagine will be a frighteningly small airplane bound for Martha’s Vineyard. Following this inevitable white knuckler of a flight, we are to be swept off to a local radio station to perform a couple of acoustic songs live on the air. Then we are to finally meet up with the lads who’ve had a day and a half of leisure under their belts and will look calm and refreshed having gorged on Cheese Steaks in Philly and Clams in Martha’s Vineyard.

Very happy to say that we stay in MV for the evening and have the next day off. I had the pleasure of sailing into Edgartown with the Fairest One of all and a few friends on a posh, posh, posh yacht a number of years back. Very cool little spot, surrounded by some very rich, rich homeowners.

That evening we board the bus again to head to Dewey Beach. As of typing this diary, I confess that I know nothing about Dewey Beach. I don’t know what State it is in, or if it is North or South of anywhere I’ve ever been. I assume from the name that I’ll be close to the ocean when I play, and I assume that will be the Atlantic Ocean, but can’t be sure.

On Friday we should arrive at Wolftrap in the greater DC area. This could be the nicest venue in America. It is a wooden Amphitheatre that looks beautiful and sound amazing and has the best technical set up I’ve ever seen. We’ve played there with the Cheiftains, Sinead Oconnor, Saw Doctors, Seven Nations, The Young Dubs and Eddie from Ohio. They’ve all been dandy.

Immediately following our opening set at Wolftrap (we are on at 7:30) we bolt for the border and Toronto in attempt to make the morning flight back to the Rock. If all goes well, I could be home by early afternoon.

Big week. They all seem big lately. Cool.

Just crossing through the border check area near the Peace Bridge. A surly looking US Customs Official looks like he intends to board the bus. Best not be looking at the Mac when he arrives.

Looking forward to the week ahead. Hope you are, too.

Cheers,

Alan

Alan,

Dewey Beach is indeed on the Atlantic Ocean and in the state of Delaware. As for your traveling back and forth, it might be in the State of confusion, too! So happy you are doing the World Café thing - it's been way too long (I think that was the TURN tour we last heard you interviewd on WXPN). Their news digs are tres nice. Don't forget to get out on the beach and thanks for coming to Philly again. See you at the Folk Fest!

Dewey Beach is in the southern part of the state of Delaware, not far from Maryland and Virginia...a few hours south of Philly.  You can get your cheesesteaks in Philly, your clams in MV, and some crabs in Dewey...good stuff!  :-)  You can also get some good locally brewed beer called Dogfish Head, brewed right here in the First State (meaning first state to sign the Constitution!).

There's your little geography lesson for the day :-)

You might have better luck in Manchester: http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?city=Manchester&c_id=US&s_id=NH

Strange Brew Tavern and Milly's Tavern look fair.

You should become acquainted with beeradvocate.com, Alan - you can find  a list of bars, brewpubs, breweries, and beer stores for most any sizable town in the world, often accompanied by reviews so ya know if it's worth stoppin' in.

What a week you have planned! It's exhausting just reading about it. But how many nice places you will be, and it includes a day off or so in Martha Vineyard. That's got to be worth it. Hopefully, you'll catch one of those rich people's boat. :D

Looking forward to seeing you and your band in Akron tomorrow night. 3 or so hours one way!

Hope you enjoyed the clams on the Vineyard. I'm getting married on Monday, the 18th, on a schooner in Florida and we're dancing our first to Sea of No Cares. We'll be at the Ann Arbor, MI show. I'll be the pudgy half-Newfie newlywed with the unending smile on my face, Screech in my system, waving the  NL flag. Cheers, David

As the talk has turned to beer: Alan, clearly you'll have little time in Akron, but if you've never tried the beers from Great Lakes Brewing, in nearby Cleveland, Saturday is your chance. (They're served in bars throughout Akron, and a previous visit to the amphitheater neighborhood indicates that there are plenty of bars nearby.) I would really urge you all to visit the brew pub in Cleveland, but maybe in September?

In any case - I'm looking forward to the show in Akron...and Dewey...and Wolftrap...Lots of driving (I'm in Pittsburgh), but surely a good time.

I agree w/ Annette that Great Lakes Brewpub is the best, and the most eco-friendly too!  I just volunteered at their Burning River Fest last week.  I prefer Dortmunder Ale, but my husband likes them all!  My sister is really good friends with the owners, the Conway brothers, so we can hook you up in style in September!  The Harp just 5 min. away is excellent too.  Flannery's downtown near House of Blues is a favorite too.  However, if staying in Akron, The Barley House is pretty cool and has lots of room and an outdoor area in front.  Lockview has a nice little rooftop patio with a pretty extensive beer menu.  See you in Akron and Altamont NY in Sept. and Cleveland too!

Glad to hear Wolf Trap is a good venue. We missed you at Blue's Fest in O-town earlier this summer so we were delighted to see we could hook a GBS show into our family vay-cay. We're packing up the minimobile and driving 9 hours with the bambinos to see you on our way to OBX.  It's a big day... my b-day and the kids (9 and 4!!!).  Please tell me Wolf Trap serves mommy-juice or wobbly pot. Gonna need it!

We'll being seeing GBS tomorrow at the Philadelphia Folk Festival.  My son is turning 8-yrs.-old on Monday and opted for going to a GBS concert instead of a birthday party.  He's so excited to see everyone live.  My 5-yr.-old is excited too.  I'm so glad GBS was going to be somewhere near eastern PA - that means we only have a 2 hour drive.

Ok Alan, here's the scoop on Dewey:  As an alumni of the University of Delaware I can tell you this with some authority!  The Bottle and Cork in Dewey Beach is one of two legendary Beach Bars in DELAWARE. (the others is The Rusty Rudder in Rehoboth Beach). They were legendary in the early 80's, and still are.
The southern or lower part of DE is locally known as "SLower Delaware"; The state is "mid-atlantic", neither North nor South, but a bit of both, sharing borders with the Philly area and Maryland on the "DelMarVa Peninsula".  It is surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
I'm heading back to PA next week to see a dear old friend for the weekend and return to the B&C to see you guys.  Sort-of a "full circle" moment in life!  My high school best friend, my college beach bar, and my favorite band of my 40's!  Oh Yeah!

Thanks for a fantastic show in Buffalo last night, you guys truly rocked the harbor.  My wife I took our 8 year old daughter and 5 year old son, both of who are great big fans.  It was their first rock concert and I couldn't have imagined a better show for them to see.

Do worry about the flight to the Vineyard.  I used to work for one of those airlines and the pilots are the best.  Most of them have been flying those routes for years and know them like the drive home.  I actually feel safer on those planes than I do on the larger ones.

Thanks for doing what you do.

This is the morning after the Akron concert.  My first time seeing you live!  It was a smaller venue, and I was right up front, between Alan and Murray, I had the very best time!  I knew I'd have a good time, and enjoy the show, but you boys far exceeded my expectations!  The energy was unbelievable, and your music, was just explosive!  I could not have asked for a better experience for my first GBS concert!  I'm so lucky that I found you guys!  Just a chance meeting on the myspace music page a little under a year ago, where I was strangly drawn in by a fish with legs, sitting on a chair... I heard Captian Kidd and it was all over!  I've been a big fan ever since!

Thanks guys for the good time last night!!!  Can't wait to see you again!  :)

Thanks for the wonderful Concert in Buffalo.  A very special thank you for playing my dogs name sake song, A Boat like Gideon Brown. The breeder had already named him Chase, so instead of Gideon Brown his name is Gideon Chase, but he's brown.!

This was a girls night out concert for us and we met up with one of the girls friends, 'bob'. I'd met him once or twice before.  He was holding places for us.  I thought it odd as I had instigated the girls night to GBS yet had not bought his ticket as I did the others.  He and I eyeballed each other though the opening acts wondering what the other was doing there as we are both so very different.  Then when GBS took the stage we discovered we both new the words to every song!  A new and deep friendship was instantly formed.

Btw - I bought the new cd at the concern... Alan, you promised that anyone who did you and the boys would sing a cappella the whole album in their kitchen.  YOU OWE ME A KITCHEN CONCERT!

The Akron concert was fantastic! It was the first time I'd been to downtown Akron in quite some time, and it was neat to see the venue. It's in a park built atop the canal where there used to be buildings when I was growing up. That was the third time I'd seen you guys in Ohio (the other two were in Cleveland and Columbus). It is a rather deceptively large state. :)

Wow, that is a dizzying pace!

Used to frequent Dewey Beach in my 20s...let's just say, it is the antithesis of a Martha's Vineyard beach experience!  Bottle and Cork is legendary and a dive --- the best combo! Can't wait to see what old relics are still there, and I ain't talking bout the people -- Chicken Ed's, Rusty Rudder, wing place late night; wonder if any remain?

The Starboard Restaurant has an awesome Bloody Mary buffet (not sure if you can get your version there, but if not there, where?

Plenty of places to go for a run or perhaps you can scrounge up a game of beach volleyball!

Wolf Trap -- such a beautiful place and it's a National Park that you can legally drink in! Though no food or drink at your seats

Good luck on the run for the border.  I-95 going north is under construction and Sunday's simple 2 hour drive from Baltimore airport ballooned into a 5 hour nightmare...ughhh

Friday night's concert in Akron was exhilarating!  Beautiful weather, full moon, Jeremy Fisher opening up for Great Big Sea.  We should've brought the kids.  We danced and had smiles on our faces the whole night.

I can't wait for Wolf Trap on Friday! I took off work, and my best friend is flying in early from Boston just to go to the concert!  We are meeting my brother and a bunch of his friends.  He discovered GBS totally separate from me- our love for the music must be genetic!

We'll be the first ones on the lawn with lots of food and drink (and most likely will be singing and dancing even before the concert starts haha).

See you soon!  Have a safe trip on the way!
