Alan's From The Road

Tour Diary - June 25, 2008 - Ottawa (on the bus)

Just sitting here on the side of a downtown hotel in the Nation’s Capitol watching people hurry to their jobs and clutching their Starbucks.  Funny how some seem to really enjoy the start of the day while others need a while to warm up to it.  I, for one, have never really been a morning person.  I get up when it is required and can function well on little sleep but I'm also very good at pulling off a 12 hour nap occasionally if time allows. I have never overslept and missed a flight or meeting, and can think of only two or three times when I'm the last guy to show up for an appointment.  I'm freakishly early, actually.  Must come from my Mom and Dad, I s'pose.

No, I am not a morning person, but I don't mind getting up. As long as it does not require singing before noon.  I don't think I'm a big whiner, so please allow me one paragraph to vent.  Jaysus, I hate singing in the morning.  I suck at it and it blows my pipes for a couple of days to follow.  The guys at Canada AM have been so good to us over the years, and giving us three tunes on National TV was a great way to kick off the CD, so I don't want to sound like and ungracious guest, but blowing out a couple of rockers before Noon is just crazy.

Thanks for that.

We've had a few great nights since we hit the road last Friday.  PJ O'Brien’s jam gig was grand fun and I can't wait for tonight's event in downtown Ottawa.  We've always been well received here, so I hope for more of the same.

The CD seems to be well received as well.  Got 3.5 stars in a Toronto Star review and a cool mention on the Playlist of USA Today.  Signs are good.

Spent last night at the Gainey Foundation event in Montreal.  What an accomplishment for that Family to take the tragic loss of a Mom/Wife and a Daughter/Sister and turn it into a positive force in their lives and the lives of others.  I am drawn to those who make the best of things ad make the most of their days.  The Gainey Family is on the top of the list.

I am typing on my new Mac, by the way.  I think this laptop may be the biggest submission to peer pressure in my adult life.  I honestly believe I bought this computer because all the cool people I know have one just like it.  Frig sakes, I'm almost 40.  I'm someone's Dad.  I should be above this kind of nudging, but apparently I am not.  I am under the illusion that this music making machine will make me a better write and producer, but who am I kidding?  I bought this computer so I could take foolish pics like these:

Alan and Sean

Alan and Murray

Many thanks to those of you who've com out so far.  Off to talk about myself again.

Rock on.

Cheers,
Alan

We had a wonderful time at the Metropolis last night!

BTW, men are never too old to submit to peer pressure. My husband is only a couple of years younger than you and still revels in whipping out his 80 gig video iPod to show everyone that his is bigger than theirs and he got it 2 months ago. Men will be boys.

For what its worth, you may have blown some pipes, but somewhere in Kingston was I, rocking my baby back to sleep and watching you...I can't think of a better way to start my birthday! To get new music from you on that day...Fortune's Favour indeed! You may have been thinking...Gee this sucks...but you made my day! Cheers!

Must agree with you that mornings do suck... my strategy for appearing to be a morning person is to wake up 3 hoursish before you need to be anywhere. At my last job my boss thought that I woke up looking prim, polished & perky as Rachel Ray... but in reality, his 9am was my noon. Of course that requires being able to crash by 9pm... I guess there's no winning. For hating mornings, you were still fabulous!

Alan,

I'll agree with the others that you sounded fine. It was obvious you were not a morning person when you kept trying to convince yourself that you loved early morning gigs. We appreciated the opportunity to hear the songs and cheer you on. Rock on! I am enjoying the new CD immensely. Thanks so much from a morning person who turns into a pumpkin at midnight.

"Great Photoshop work, Alan." Awesome.

Looks like this round of FTRs are going to be a whole lot of funny, maybe even excruciatingly so. One thing though, may not be best idea to let Tosh proof your entries.

Friday's show in Tdot was white hot...I think it burned my retinas.

Mornings should only be for those who haven't slept the night before or birds!  Sadly, I work for a living (sigh) and the boss generally isn't impressed if you arrive in the p.m. so each morning for 5 days a week I am forced to rise in the a.m.  Great photos Alan and oh, by the way "almost 40" and finally a laptop - way to go, welcome to the 21st!  Must say I quite enjoy your musings - life can be a pain at times and reading FTR provides me with a few giggles.  Keep it up.  Cheers.

Thanks for the great laugh! Keep up the funny pics.  As for the peer pressure, you're not alone...I too fell under the great stress and purchased a mac book 2 weeks ago!  It's loads of fun but am still working how to use it!!! Hope the tour goes well and look forward to seeing you here in Tucson, Az.  Your devoted fan in AZ!

Dear Mr Doyle,

You were simply amazing on Tuesday. And the songs were merely a part of that - your kindness to the fans in taking pictures and answering questions and giving out handshakes and smiles made for a wonderful memory filled day for several fans. It's nice to know that the men who inspire so many of us, still understand what a few seconds of time from the person/people one admires can mean to someone.
Thanks for that,
Andi

I second Andi's comment Alan. You have no idea how much it means to us fans when you guys take the time out to sign autographs, get pictures and talk to fans. It means the WORLD to us, just wanted you to know that!

As for the peer pressure, don't worry about it. There are lots of worse things that peer pressure could have caused you to give into- smoking for example. Glad you never picked that up, could have ruined your amazing pipes!

Thanks again for signing my cd today and can't wait to see you in Gander.

Cheers!

Was at the Heart & Crown in Ottawa for your energetic performance.  Always great showmen and loved the fact that the venue was small.  I can't make the Bluesfest Performance but I could never get that close anyways.  It shows you guys just love to play music.

Just had to run out and pick up the CD.  My 6 year old daughter already can sing along with "Love Me Tonight" Thanks for letting the cameras in. My view of you guys from the side of the stage made the experience so memorable and the camera shots helps me remember the night.

By the way turning 40 is not that bad.

By the way, I grew up in Montreal and actually got to a Stanley Cup Parade.  Electrical.

Still a Habs fan in Ottawa....

You know - mornings are not so bad.. I find that what always gets the blood pumping is a quick blast of "When I am King" or a few singalong numbers from "Road Rage" or "Courage & Patience & Grit"..
Sorry Alan - not sure what I can suggest for you!!

By the way - congrats to you all on a fantastic new album..!! My copy arrived very promptly soon after the release date - even way Down Under..!!

Speaking of which - saw the footage on YouTube of your guys singing our unofficial national anthem "Down Under" on the Ships and Dips cruise - good work guys..!! Any chance we'll see you down here performing it in person any time soon...!?!?! (Hint hint hint!!!!)

Cheers
